X. t- VOL. VII - THE DALLES, OREGON; THURSDAY, JUNE 28, 1894. NO 160. MOST ON CARNOT -1 The Anarchist Gloats Over , THE BE-WHISKERED ANIMAL Two Murderers Examined, Santon and Prendergast--the latter Condemned to Die of Old Age. ' Herr Johtnn Host. New Yokk, Jane 26. The anarchists of thia city met last night in Faulkhaber's hall. "Socialism and Anarchism" was to have been the subject of the evening, bnt little' else was spoken of but the exalted "bravery" of the "martyr' who assassinated Carnot. The leader of communist:.: anarchistics in this city, Herr Johann Most, was located yesterday in a saloon on Park row, where he was eating his lunch. He said: "What do I think of Carnot's death? Well, I think the hog should have been stuck long ago. You don't see any mourning band around my hat, do you? Well, neither would you if the whole brood of autocratic hogs were butcher- 1, all in a heap. They ought to be gi.-n their quietus in droves of 40 and 50. Not that Carnot -was any particular luminous mark to aim at. He was not exactly what one would call a despot, but the big overbearing pig scrawled his name to every document that steeped honest folks deeper and deeper into slavery, it was just right, it was; glorious, to extinguish his life. The czar's time will come " yet. It costs about $4,000,000 a year to hedge that hog's life around with safeguards, but with all the precautions he finds every day some each pleasant souvenir as a death's head painted on his bedcurtain, or a dagger stuck into his counterpane, or a minatnre bomb lying under his bed. He's the hog with the biggest grunt, and some day he'll have to gd like your Carnots and your other beasts. Herr Dowe'a bullet-proof coat of mail may not avail him. He'll be reached, though he sit entrenched within a tower of steel a thousand feet in thickness. As for your brood of reporters, I want to say," continued Herr Most, in a crescendo voice, as he rose from the table, having finished his meal, "you are not 'your own masters. I know you are the slaves of the big combines that - send you hither and thither to do this and that. Today you're sent to inter view anarchists, the next day a hog of a so-called statesman, and the third day you report the execution of some other t murderer. But mark you, though you are slaves, I give you warning that if you do not treat us with greater fairness than you have been doing slave or no slave you will someday come into con tact with the knife's edge, and in a way that will not please you." Most also spoke of the manner in which weapons and dynamite ought to . be used to prove most effective. He had published an editorial in the Frei , heit, which was translated for a morning paper.' In it he treats of the superiority of some weapons over others in dispatch ing rulers and the bourgeois. He gives prominence to the knife. When asked concerning the coincidence between his having advocated the use oi the knife and its employment by the Italian who murdered Carnot. Most said : "You don't mean to say that my advice was so quickly acted upon?" Calus Zinynerman, editor of the Flam ming Torch, said Carnot richly deserved his fate. Continuing, he said : "He had been asked' to pardon "Vai Ljit, and h9 treated the committee like so many dogs. The committee wished to show that Vaillant's trial was unfair, and that he was not guilty, but Carnot showed the committee to the door, and the martyred Vaiilant was executed Carnot could have saved him "with one stroke of his pen." An Accident to Edison. New Yobk, June 26. Despite the mos stringent efforts to conceal the facts, the details of a somewhat serious accident to Thomas A. Edison have just come to light. Mr. Edison on Friday evening last was sitting on the porch of Highest of all in Leavening Power. Latest U. S. Gov't Report. mm , '. 11 ' his boarding "house at Ogden, when in some una ccountable way, his chair gave way and he was thrown backward on the porch, striking himself heavily. He is rather a heavy man and it gave him a ereat shock. Friends at once ran to his assistance, but he picked himself up and said that he felt no pain or incon venience. Saturdav nrighthewent home feeling sore and-stiff, but thought little of the matter. On Sunday he became worse and suffered a great deal of pain. His family physician was called in, and thought but little of the matter,' but prescribed for him. Yesterday Mr. Edison was worse and unable to leave the house. The physicians are puzzled. No bones are broken. It is feared that some internal injury may have been sustained. I An Offer' to Settle. Pun-xsutawney, June 26. The offi cials of the Rochester & Pittsburg Coaj & Iron Company have offered a settle ment at 40 cents net, and the Adrian miners will hold a secret meeting to night to consider the proposition. Agent Allison says he will advise the men to accept nothing less than 45 cents. The Berwind and White companies started their mines at Anita today with fifty new men, under the protection of the coal and iron - police. Trouble at these mines is looked for. A Beign of Terror. Colorado Springs, June 25. A reign of terror prevails here. Rumors of con templated raids on account of the Tars ney outrage,- fill the air. The jail and public buildings are strongly guarded at night. Sheriff Bowers received a letter warning him that if he did not arrest Tarsney's assailants the town would be burned. W. H. Brooks, a Cripple Creek mineowner, who was the first to, require nine hours for a day's work, has been warned that he will receive the same treatment given Tarsney. Against Margin. San Francisco, June 26. In the case of Wetmore vs. Barrett & Co., stock brokers, to recover money on a stock ac count, which was decided in favor of the plaintiff in . the superior court and ap pealed to the supreme court, the latter court today affirmed the judgment of the lower court. This case relates to the legality of margin dealings in stocks, and is of Buch importance that the de fendants may appeal - to the United States supreme court to test the consti tutionality, of the law. , The Assassin Examined. Lyons, June 26. Assassin Santo, be fore an .examining magistrate today, de clared himself 'an anarchist. 'He said he acted upon . his own initiative. He has not been in any conspiracy. ' Never theless it has been ascertained that when Santo stopped' at, Vienne and Montpelier he had several conferences with . persons suspected of being in league with the anarchists. The police have already arrested three persons at Yienne believed to have been engaged in the conspiracy. . . Prendergast's Hearing. Chicago, June 26. Judge Payne to day rendeted a decision in the Prender- gast insanity hearing, which will Jiave an important bearing on the case. In- deciding ,a point raised by the counsel, the judge said he would instruct the jury that the defense must prove that the assassin has become insane since his last trial, otherwise tbe'former verdict must stand, even though Prendergast was found insane at the present time.
