'o Reasons for Apprehension.
Washington, June 25. The president
today, in speaking of the financial situa
tion, said : "The offer of certain of the
New York banks to replace from their
vaults the gold withdrawn from the
government treasury for shipment
abroad is certainly thoughtful, and
patriotic. The elements which make up
our financial situation, do not justify
any apprehensions, and the administra
tion still adheres to its pledge and de
termination to protect our national credit
at all hazards and to keep the quality of
our money equal to the best, so far as
the limits of executive legislation per
mit. Of, course, croaking and disquiet
ing tales are circulated during the st-'-i-"gent
financial condition. I assume,
however, there is too much patriotism
among our people, and too much famil
iarity with our resources and capabilities
to permit our reserved force and finan
cial vigor to be discredited.
"When the last government bonds
were issued to replenish our stock of
gold it was nearly as low as now. While
outside of our gold we had, in available
money to pay the ordinary expenses of
the government, only about $19,000,000,
we now have, besides our gold, and in
money applicable to government ex
penses more than $53,000,000. I under
stand it is charged in certain quarters
that the paymentof matured obligations
is postponed to the amount of $50,000,
000 or $75,000,000. This is not true.
We are paying as we go, in the usual
way. . Last year, up to June, the bal
ance against us, arising from the ex
ports and imports of merchandise, ex
cluding gold and silver, was $64,552,040.
, The balance in our favor for the sama
period this year will be $62,940,565, rep
resenting a change in our favor of $127,
492,602. The conditions taken in consid
eration with the willingness of our banks
to help the treasury during any tempo
rary and unusual drain of gold, ought to
eatisfy the most conservative of our
safety. It must not be forgotten there
is another feature to be taken . into
consideration, that we are no longer
purchasing silver or issuing gold ob
ligations therefore."
Attacked a Work Train.
Hunwsutawxey, Pa., June 25. Since
the men attacked the train loaded with
coal and iron and the police at Adrian
last night the women have put on war
paint. At Walston, early today, they
massed and charged upon a work train,
but before any serious damage was done
the guards drove them off. At noon
Captain Clarke, of the coal and iron
police in Adrian, was pounced upon and
beaten by women. Stones were thrown
at General Manager Fisher's train last
night, and both engineer and fireman
were hurt. The striking cokers seriously
damaged the Posum Run railroad bridge,
on the outskirts of New Haven, Pa.,
last night, with dynamite. The railroad
is a branch of the Southwestern Penn
sylvania, over which coke from the
Trotter works is transported. Two
hundred families in the company houses
at the Panhandle mines, near Pittsburg,
painters, etc,, have been evicted. They
firmly refused to sign the scale.
One Result of the Assassination.
WAsmxfeTON, June 25. William A.
Stone, a member of the judiciary com
mittee, today presented the following
bill in the house which was referred to
the judiciary committee :
"That any person or persons who
shall belong to or who shall be appointed
or designated by any society or organi
zation existing in this country or in any
foreign country, which provides in writ
ing or by verbal agreement, understand
ing or countenance, for the taking of

the probable result of such destruction
oi propertv, shall be 'deemed an an

"Any person or persons being anar
chists, as defined by the first section of
this act, who shall attempt the life of
any person holding office, elective or ap
pointive, nnderthe constitution and
laws of the United States, or who 6hnll
attempt the destruction of buildings, or
other properties where the loss .of life of
any such official would be the probable
result of Buch destruction of buildings,
or other property, shall, upon trial and
conviction of such offense in any circuit
or district court of the district where
such offense was attempted, be sen
-fenced to death bv hanging, which sen
tence shall be executed by the marshal
of the district m accordance with the
sentence of the judge before whom the
case was tried."
Armor-Plate Frauds.
Lincoln, Neb., June 25. Farragut
post, G. A. R., last night adopted the
following: '"Resolved, That we recom
mend the confiscation of the Carnegie
plant as a military necessity, and the
trial for treason of every person con
nected with this cowardly assault on the
very citadel of our national liberty;
that we recommend that in all future
trials of armor plate from this plant,
Carnegie and his man Frick be placed
immediately behind the target till the
test is completed. .
"Resolved, That we call upon the
press of the country to demand, in the
name of all the people, such tests -of
material which enters into the con
struction of our national defenses as
shall make it practically impossible for
such treachery and scandals to occur ;
that if there be no constitutional law to
bring such miscreants to the dungeon
cell and gallows tree, the representa
tives of the press urge national legisla
tion to the end that justice be done and
the honor and glory of our flag be main
tained." Were on a Fishing; Excursion.
New iobk, June 25. The disaster
cansed by the capsizing of ' the tug
James D. Nicholl, off Sandy Hook yes
terday, is rendered more harrowing by
the fact that most of the man leave
large families. It is thought not less
than thirty-three persons perished. So
far, however, only seven bodies have
been recovered. Those identified are
Frank Dunn", Herman Evard, Keyser,
Thomas Massett, Walter Buckridge.
The two last named lived in Brooklyn,
the others in New York. Among the
missing are the following : Frank Mc
Aleer, William Moore, Albert Pabst,
Frederick Vohling, Solomon Grisman,
Christian Seahn. Among the wreckage
washed ashore are two kegs of beer.
Kscaped from Jail.
(Jorvallis, Or., June 25. Ed Scott
and George Hall, who have been in the
Benton county jail several weeks,
awaiting the action of the grand jury,
the former on the charge of assault
with intent to kill, and the latter for
burglary, broke out about 5 o'clock this
morning by cutting away a' portion of
the arched door at the entrance to the
jail with pocketknife. The alarm was
given by a passer-bv, and soon' after
thir departure the sheriff and posse
were in hot pursuit. About 3 o'clock
this afternoon, the fugitives were over
taken in a wheat field six miles west
of the town, and were captured without
resistance. They are both in jail again,
and precautions will be taken to prevent
a similar occurrence in the future.
Illinois Democrats.
Speingpield, 111., June 25. The
democratic state convention convenes
here Wednesday morning. General
Black ia the only active senatorial
candidate who has put in an appearance
so far. He expresses himself confident
of success. Whether the "convention
will make any senatorial nomination at
all is largely a matter of conjecture.
Half the delegates now here believe
there will be no nominations, and the
remainder are equally confident the
other way.

had voted against the $5,000,000 world's

curred their hatred. He spoke sarcas

said the beautiful flowers sent him by

sentences he had framed for those who
had said hard things about him.
Want More Room for Grazing:.
Washington, June 25. A large num
ber of petitions for opening lands of na
tional parks of California for the accom
modation of sheep herders have been re
ceived at the interior department. The
department, however, has declined to
take such action on the graund that it
would constitute a violation of the act of
congress under which the parks were set
aside, and that congress can alone act.
There are 1786 square mile of land em
braced in the three parks, the Yosemite
and Sequoia, and the General Grant.
For tlie Admission of Utah.
Washington-, June 25. It is under
stood to be Senator Faulkner's intention
to call up the bill for the admission of
Utah after the tariff bill is out of the
way, as the bill was unanimously re
ported from the committee. It being
the policy of both sides to admit the
territory, it will probably pass.
Still Causing Trouble.
Washington, June 25. The Salva
dorean refugees now on board the United
States steamship Bennington, at Liber
tad, are still causing this government
much concern and their disposition wag
the subject of long conferences today .be

Persons who sympathize with the
afflicted will rejoice with D. E. Carr of
1235 Harrison street, Kansas City. He
is an old sufferer from inflammatory
rheumatism, but has not heretofore been
troubled in this climate. Last winter
he went up into Wisconsin, and in con
sequence has had another attack. "It
came upon me very acute and severe,"
he said. "My joints swelled and became
inflamed ; sore to touch or almost to look
at. Upon the urgent request of my
mother-in-law I tried Chamberlain's
Pain Balm to reduce the swelling and
ease the pain,- and to my agreeable sur
prise, it did both. I have used three

Deafness Cannot be Cured
By local applications, as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear.
There is only one way to cure Deafness,
and that is by constitutional remedies.
."Deafness is caused by an inflamed con

Eustachian Tube.'1 When this tube gets
inflamed you have a rumbling sound or
imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely
closed Deafness is the result, and unless
the inflammation can betaken out and
this tube restored to its normal condi

nine cases out of ten are caused by
catarrh, which Ms nothing -but an in
flamed condition of the mucous surfaces.
