Bonn tcoas and Heautifnl Beyond descrip tion A Flanrlnc Fountain of Wine from California. . . .' The horticultural display at ' the world's fair will be bewildering- in ex tent and marvelous in beauty. . The ex oibit will possess great scientific and sducational value, but to the ordinary visitor its ornamental features will be the most striking. Indeed, it will play an important part in the adornment of the great exposition. While in almost every part of the exposition grounds may be seen gratifying evidences of the very efficient work of the horticultural department, the central point of inter est will naturally be in the exhibit in the horticultural building. This struc ture is 998 feet long and has an extreme width of 250 feet. Its plan is a central pavilion with two end pavilions, each connected with it by front and rear cur tains, forming two interior courts, each 88 by 370 feet. Surmounting the central pavilion is a beautifully proportioned dome, 187 feet in diameter and 113 feet high. ' In the south pavilion of the building will be installed the viticultural ex hibit, embracing all varieties of wine and everything pertaining to its manu facture. An idea of how complete this part of the exhibit will be can be gained from the fact that applications for space have already been received from thirty three foreign countries. From abroad the exhibits of France, Germany, Spain and Italy will be especially notable. A fine exhibit of Chilian wines and rais ins, famed for their superior quality, will be made. California will make a splendid display, all of the great firms being exhibitors and having applied for much more space than can possibly be allowed them. If permission, which has been asked, be given, Senator Stan ford will exhibit a wine fountain. This, as planned, will throw, for two hours each morning and afternoon, graceful streams of wine to the height of twenty two feet - In the rear curtains of the building will be shown the fruit exhibit, which will include all varieties grown in any part of the world. As far as it is possi ble to do so, probably in a great ma jority of cases, fine specimens of the natural fruit will be shown. Other wise wax models, so perfect in appear ance as to be indistinguishable from the -eal fruit, will be substituted. For this exhibit about forty-four thousand square feet, or more than an entire acre of space, is reserved. A very complete and splendid exhibit of citrons and other fruits will be sent from California, Honda, Jlexico and South American countries. By means of refrigerators ripe fruit can . be sent long distances j without injury, and after reaching the fair cold storage facilities will be avail able to keep it in perfect condition. The exhibit in the important line of floriculture will be exceptionally exten sive, and the preparation of it is far ad vanced. Unless this were the case the exhibit could not well be a success, for time is required for the plants to over come the check received in being trans planted. More than 500,000. trans planted Shrubs and plants, of many spe cies, are now growing in the exposition grounds, and the number is rapidly in creasing. The department sent out cir culars to prominent horticulturists and horticultural societies in all parts of the world, requesting donations of plants, and agreeing to permit the name and address Of the donors to appear in con nection with such specimens as they might send. The result is that thou-, sands of plants excellent sDecimens. j too have been forwarded. Among I them are more than 50,000 rare rose j plants, which have been donated by firms all the way from California to Hungary. The floricultnral exhibit will not be concentrated n one place. In the front curtains of the building will appear the greenhouse and hothouse plants a very large variety and many rare and beautiful specimens. There, too, will be the finest display of orchids ever seen in this country, if not in the world. One firm alone will spend S40.000 on its orchid exhibit. At the opening of the fair. Chief Samueis says there will be a display of 2,000 different varieties of orchids, embracing fully 15.000 speci mens. Beneath the great dome will be the largest tropical plants obtainable, in eluding Japanese and Chinese bamboos 75 to 80 feet highj palms 30 to 40 feet high, and tree ferns 15 feet or more in height. There will also be a miniature mountain covered with tropical plants, and in a cave within will be tried the experiments of growing plants by elec tric light and of growing them by the aid of electric currents, passed through, the soil, both of which, it is claimed, have been accomplished with remarka ble results. Russian Exhibit of Sugar. With a view to acquainting the Amer icans with the Russian sugar industry, tne department of trade and manufac tures, through the intermediary of the president of the Kieff bourse commit tee, has proposed to the sugar refiners Df southwestern Russia to exhibit in the Russian section of the world's fair at Chicago collective samples of the prod ucts of this industry independent of the exhibits made by individual refiners. At the same time it is suggested that a brief review of the sugar Industry in southwestern Russia should be compiled io as to give a clear idea of the gradual levelopment of this industry and its present condition. . After years of vain negotiations the Royal Botanical society of London has at last obtained a specimen of that rarest of oriental j-arities, . the , coco de mer, or double cocoannt. For hundreds ef years, arid even in the year 1 S92, the origin of the coco de mer is a mystery that is yet to be ex plained. It is unknown to cocoanut growers and gatherers, and, according to creditable testimony, has never been seen except when washed upon, the shores of some tropical country by a mighty storm. Lilly, the famous' as trologer, owned a small cne.andCamac, of Paris, another. To these uncanny nuts the ignorant masses of the seventeenth century at tributed many of the supernatural feats said to have been performed by their owners. They were and arexsup posed to have wonderful powers in the way of curing diseases. At one time it was reported that there was a species of cocoanut tree growing on the island of Sepchelies which grew nothing but these wonderful nuts. Williams, K. N., exploded the story and the coco de mer is still a mystery. .' Deafness Cannot be Cured By local applications, as thev cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear There is only one way to cure Deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies Deafness is caused by an inflamed con dition of the ' mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube gets inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imneriect tear in sr. and when it is entirely closed Deafness is the result.sand unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condi tion, hearing will be destroyed forever: nine cases out of ten are caused by catarrh, which ia nothing but an in flamed condition of the mucous surfaces We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafness (caused by catarth) that cannot be cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure. The Force of Habit. f In the county court at Toronto may be seen a venerable tar who has found a haven in these legal precincts as a sub ordinate officer after having been tossed on the ocean for many a year in "hex majesty's" service. Kot long ajro, when the hour for adjourning a .sitting of the court had arrived the crier was absent and the judge, turning to the quondam mariner, said: "Captain, adjourn the court-" Trained to prompt obedience. the captain"' shouted in stentorian tones: liOh yes! oh yes! oh yes''But of the mystic formula no move came tC his command. Not to be foiled in the discharge of duty, he proceeded in his own fashion: "Ladies and gentlemen, you may consider Jthis court adjourned. Clew up your sails and heave the an chor. You must be here at ten o'clock in the morning. We will then weigh anchor and make sail. God save the queen!" Astonished silence held al) present for a moment, and then gave way to a peal of laughter, in which even "the court" was compellec bo join. stopping Electric Locomotives. Although it has hitherto been possible to stop an electric car quickly, the re versal of the current which the action necessitated resulted in a considerable waste and caused a tendency to burn out the motors. A new method of ac complishing the stoppage has been de vised. The new motors of a car are so connected that the electro motive force of each under the rotation imparted by the forward movement of the car op poses that of. the other, and tends to produce a current in such a direction as to increase its own field magnetism and cut down that of the other. The car will thus be checked'or brought 'to a sudden stop if . running rapidly, and if on a heavy grade will creep slowly down without taking current from the supply wire and without having the brakes set.
