THE-HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.
They Are Situated Many Miles Distant
from Honolulu.
The group lies in a chain distant
from Oahu seven hundred to twelve
hundred ; miles, west bv northwest.
There are several records of its discov
ery. Ocean island ' was quite well
known as early as 1830. In that year
the English vessel Gledstanes -was
wrecked on its shores. In 1870 the
United States cruiser Saginaw was
lost in these waters. . She had gone
down there to dredge a channel and
provide a station for old side-wheelers
then setting out as Pacific mail liners.
The only losses of life were from
small boats. One boat, sent up this
way for assistance, was lost just off
Kauai. But one of the crew was
saved. He brought the news to Hono
lulu. In a few hours Capt. King, now
minister of interior, was off aboard a
schooner carrying a relief expedition.
Next day, at the request of the Ameri
can minister, an island steamer was
sent after the schooner. Tjong .was
master of the steamer, and Capt. Rice,
now of the tug Eleu, was mate. They
beat Capt. King only twenty hours to
Ocean island. The Americans Avere
gone. They had been picked up by a
sailing vessel. An inquiry that stirred
naval cicles followed the loss of the
Saginaw, and Honolulu was made the
port of call for. the Pacific mail. Of
the three side-wheel liners, one was
burned at sea, one at Hong Kong, and
the third lost off Panama.
Years ago two whalers went ashore
in one night on Pearl and Hermes
reef. The vessels were lost entirely
and several men drowned. In 1885,
the English craft Dunnater Castle,
coal laden from Newcastle, was
wrecked on an Ocean island reef. A
small boat sent for help found its way
here. The Waialeale. Hale, master,
was dispatched to the rescue and
brought all hands to .Honolulu. The
crew of the Saginaw first found water
on Ocean island. '
At one time the carrying of guano
and phosphates to the United States
from the midway group promised to
become a great business. The discov
ery of phosphates in Florida and other
states along the Atlantic coast had a
depressing effect on the fertilizer traf
fic in the United States.
Collar of Honor for Noble Hogs.
In France there exists an order of
merit, founded by the society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, of
which the members are dogs who have
distinguished themselves by deeds of
bravery. A tastefully -designed "col
lar of honor" is awarded to the nom
inees of the order. . Among the ani
mals already decorated in this way
one of the most celebrated is Bacchus,
a large bulldog, whose specialty it is to
stop runaway horses by jumping up
and seizing them by the bridle. It is
calculated that the intelligent beast
has already saved the lives of eight
persons, if not more, in this way'. Pa
taud, another bulldog, received a col
lar in 1887 for. saving his mistress.from
the attack of a footpad, and Turk, a
splendid Newfoundland, has - had a
similar honor for saving three young
children from drowning; on different
occasions.

The Sioux Indians have a newspaper
published at Madison, S. IX, called the
Anpokin. Its motto is' from Luke L,

sickness and a doctor bill to pay, is any
thing but pleasant for a man of a family
to contemplate, whether he is a laborer,
mechanic, merchant or publisher. Jas
O. Jones, publisher of the Leader,
Mexia, Texas, was sick in bed for ten
days with the grip daring Us prevalence
a year or two ago. Later in tbe .season
be had a second attack. He says: "In
the latter ca6e I used Chamberlain's
Cough Remedy with considersible suc
cess, I think, only being in bed a little
over two days. The second attack I am
satisfied would have been equally' as bad
as the first but for tbe use of tbe remedy."
It should be borne in mind that the grip
is much tbe same as a very severe cold
and requires precisely -the same treat

WING FEATHERS.
The Marvelous Mechanical Provisions ot
. Nature. . . " ,
Feathers are peculiar to birds, and in
their typical form have a shaft or stiff
central rod fixed at one end into the
skin and free at the other. From the
two opposite sides of this shaft grow
thin, fiat plates, constituting the weD
or vane of the feather. This web, how
ever, is not a simple, solijl structure
like a piece of paper, or even the leaf
of a plant. It is composed of an im
mense number of horny filaments
placed side by side and set obliquely
on the shaft, to which they are fixed
by their inner ends. -To
understand what follows, I would
ask my reader, says a writer in Good
Words, to ' take a goose - quill, or
& feather of the wing of any
bird that may be at hand, and
look at it carefully. He will see that
these separate filaments of whieli
the vane is , composed, technically
called barbs, although really distinct
from each other and only attached to
the common stem at their base, have a
curious tendency to cling together, so
as to form a continuous structure, and
that it takes ' a slight but distinct
amount of forceNto separate them, and
that after they have been pulled or
iorced apart, if they are brought in
contact .again by gently stroking the
feather in the right" direction, or by
waving it briskly through the air, they
will join again as firmly as before. He
will also find that this operation may
be repeated an indefinite number of
times.
Of all the marvelous mechanical
adaptations we . meet with in nature
there is nothing more wonderful than
that which is seen in.everv feather of a
bird's wing. The object is evidently to
produce an expanded surface, light,
strong, and practically indestructible,
one capable of resisting the pressure
brought to bear upon it in buffeting
the strongest winds without perma
nently splitting or being torn in tat
ters. ' -
Mice. Caixxkrhob Par ren, who came
here as the Greek delegate to the
woman's congress, is recognized in her
native country as the first woman there
who tried to make way for the entrance
of women in the various trades and
professions. She represented ten so
cieties at the late congress, all philan
thropic or educational, and most of '
them under the protection of the queen.
Beware of Ointments for Catarrh that
Contain Mercury,
As mercury will surely destroy the eenee
of smell and completely derange the
whole system when entering it through
the mucous surfaces. Such articles
should never be used except on pre
scriptions from reputable physicians, as
the damage they will do is ten-fold to
the good yon can possibly derive from
them. Hall's ' Catarrh Cure, manufac
tured by F. J. Cheney & Co., Toledo, O.,
contains no mercury, and is taken in
ternally, acting directly upon the blood
and mucous surfaces of the system. In
buying Hall's Catarrh Cure be sure you
get the genuine. It is taken internally,
and made in Toledo, Ohio, by F. J.

Moorish Women Sonriiuie I These'
; ' Screens Fiilli "-.
Writing about Moorish women, Rich
ard 'Harding Davis says: '"There is
something continually interesting in
the muffled figures of the women.
They make you almost ashamed of .the
uncovered faces of the American wom
en in the town, and, in the lack of any
evidence to the contrary, you begin to
believe every Moorish girl you meet is
as beautiful as her eyes would make it
appear that she is. " -"Those
of the girls whose faces I saw
were distinctly handsome: they were
the women Benjamin Constant paints
in his pictures of Algiers, and about
whom Pierre Loti goes into ecstasies
in his book on Tangiers.
"The robe or cloak, or whatever the
thing is they affect, covers the head'
like a hood, and with one hand they
hold one of the folds in front of the
face as high'' as their eyes. The only
times I ever saw the faces of any of
them were when I occasionally eluded
Mohamed and ran off with a little
guide called Isaac, the especial pro
tector of two American women, who
farmed him out to me when they pre-'
f erred to stay in the hotel.
"He is a particularly beautiful youth,
and I noticed that whenever he was
with me the cloaks of the women
had a fashion of coming .undone, and
they would lower them for an instant
and look at Isaac, and then replace
them severely upon the bridge of the
nose. . Then Isaac would turn toward
me with a shy, conscious smile, and
then blush violently. Isaac says the
young men of Tangiers can tell wheth
er or not a girl is pretty by looking at
her feet. It is true that their feet are
bare, but it struck' me as a somewhat
reckless test for-selectrcg- a bride." .
