A LAND. THAT NEVER CHANGES.
Egypt Has Mot Been Modernized Either
as to Costume or Custom.
The characters of the "Thousand
and One Nigfhts" maybe almost im
agined to step out of their setting of
words, and take form and plow with
the generous warmth of 1it before
one's very eyes, says a writer in the
Gentleman's Magazine. The natives
still drink the same coffee, and out of
the -same cups; they smoke the same
pipes, they wear generally the same
dress, they play the same primitivein
struments that whisper the same
strange and plaintive tones. The fu
neral processions wend their way along
the streets as of. old; the popular fes
tivals or moolids are still observed with
the same untiring capacity for enjoy
ment; the public reciters still prac
tice their professions before admiring
crowds; the water carriers still carry
their burdens, so welcome to thirsty
lips; except in the houses of the rich
and thoroughly ' Europeanized, food is
still eaten with the fingers, and in the
same manner, and the hands are washed
with the same basins and ewers; the
mosque of ' El Azhar still attracts its
crowd of students. Even the old wood
en locks and keys are still in use, and
the water jars are still kept cool in the
lattice work of the overhanging mush
rabiyeh window frames. Instances of
this sort might be multiplied a hun
dred fold. It is, indeed, a wonderful
change and contrast that is presented
to the eye when you leave the Euro
pean and "enter the native quarter.
And the mind and feelings turn in uni
son, and become attuned to the changed
scene. The sense of taking part in a
new and different life steals over you,
and you temporarily throw off your
affinity with the west and the nine
teenth century. The clock of time is,
for the moment, put back for you.
TRAVEL ON FRIDAY.
How Popular Superstition Affects
Rail-
robd and Steamship Business.
Much ridicule has been poured upon
Thirteen clubs, sFriday clubs and other
associations formed for the laudable
purpose of dealing in a practical and
pleasant way with some current super
stitions. Gen. Wolseley, says the Phil
adelphia Record, who in a recent pre
tentious military criticism' included
Dessaix, the hero of "Marengo, among
the generals who accompanied Na
poleon to Russia, has written a flip
pant letter to a Thirteen club in Lon
don to say that he loves to cherish the
pretty superstitions ' of his childhood.
Against this false sentiment it must be
said that some of the current popular
beliefs are positively mischievous in
many respects.
Not a transatlantic steamship com
pany has Friday among the days of de
parture, and until quite recently none
of the coastwise steamship lines had
put the unlucky day on its list. It
would be highly desirable for the
ocean mail service that some steam
ships should leave. Atlantic ports on
Friday; but' while the . owners are
doubtless exempt from any superstition
on the subject they are obliged to de
fer to an absura popular notion. Else
tfaev would be apt to find a very small'
passenger list, and might possibly ex
perience some difficulty in obtaining a
crew. Railroad ' statistics show that
there is less travel Friday than ; on
any other secular day of the week.
Experienced travelers are so well aware
of this that they sometimes do not take
the trouble to secure a Pullman ticket
Fridav, as thev are pretty sure to find
an empty berth.

Ten days loss of time on account of
sickness and a doctor bill to pay, is any'
thing but pleasant for a man of a family
to contemplate, whether he is a laborer,
mechanic, merchant or publisher. Jas.
O. Jones, publisher of the Leader,
Mexia, Texas, was kick in bed for ten
day 8 with the grip during its prevalence
a year or two ago. Later in the season
he had a second attack. He eays:"In
the latter case I used Chamberlain's
Cough Remedy with considerable sue
cess, I think, only being in bed a little
over two days. ' The second attack I am
satisfied would have been equally as bad
as the first but for the use of the remedy. "
It should be borne in mind that the grip
is much the same as a very severe cold
and requires precisely the same treat
ment. When you wish to cure a cold
quickly and effectually give this remedy

STRANGE CLIMATIC DIFFERENCE
Explanation of the Canaea of Florida's
Varying; Temperature.
People who visit the east coast of
Florida, and especially the Indian river
and the Lake Worth region, often won
der why the climate of that section is
so delightful at all times of the year
and so different in almost every par
ticular from what one would expect in
those latitudes. ' The explanation is
simple enough. The difference be
tween northern and semitropical Flor
ida, apart from the latitudinal dis
tance, is due to the elevation of the
former and the distance from it of the
gulf stream. The waters of the Gulf
of Mexico temper the immediate coast
line. Their effect does not extend far
inland. The stream is pressed close to
the east coast shore along Dade coun
ty by the Bahama banks. Atlantic
steamships southward .-bound, to avoid
the force of the current, stand in so
near the shore that they can at some
points be hailed from land. The gulf
stream is an old story, but it is a great
fact. This vast, deep blue ocean river,
a thousand times the volume of the
Mississippi, is thirty miles wide, two
thousand feet deep, and has a velocity
of five miles an hour the year round.
The temperature oi the stream is
eighty-four degrees, or nine degrees
higher than the waters of the ocean
through which it flow. The trade
winds blowing nine-tenths of the time,
winter and summer, from the eastward,
bear the stratum of warm air formed
by the gulf" stream westward across
the land. This is why the east coast is
milder and more equable than the west
coast in the same Jatitude. With, the
gulf stream are found three other
equalizing agencies the trade winds,
the everglades, with a water surface
preventing a land breeze, and the zone
of high barometric pressure. The mid
summer heat, that might otherwise be
ninety-five degrees, is reduced to some
thing like eighty-eight degrees. The
midwinter chill, which might get down
to thirty degrees, is warmed up to
something like forty degrees.
The Ponies of Sable Island.
Sable island is famous throughout
the Canadian maritime - provinces for
its race of wild ponies. . The little
creatures were originally placed upon
the island in order that they might
furnish food for shipwrecked mariners
frequently cast away there. The coarse
salt grass of the island is cured and
stacked in summer time, and upon this
the ponies feed all winter. It is said
that they eat their way deep into the
stacks and thus find their only shelter
from storms. There is a tradition cur
rent that they even eat fish cast upon
the shore. Considerable droves of the
ponies are taken to the mainland in
early autumn, and they are sold in the
Hntiinx market.

A. Story of .ucy Stone.
A characteristic story is told of Lucy
Stone. At one of her early lectures,
when she made a strong statement of
the injustice , some of -our laws did to
women, and an appeal to. have them
righted, a hiss, clear end strong, came
out of the audience. The little crea
ture stepped nearer to the front, quick
ly ran her eye over . the audience,
fastened her eyes upon -one point and
said: "Somebody hisses. I am glad of
it. Hiss it again, my fat friend, for it
is a -shameful fact and deserves to be
hissed!" The audience was- overcome
with laughter and appreciated . her
ready wit. The man felt as much like
a goose as a man can feel. He got his
head down before she had finished her
sentence, but her finger still pointed
at-him. His head went lower and low
er, and, as soon as the audience turned
from looking at him, he slipped out
and was gone. ,.
