HOW VOICES ARE RUINED.
Load Singing- and Staging- While Suffer,
inc From a Cold Detrimental.
A musician tells a reporter of the
Utica Press "How Voices Are Ruined.".
It should be read and remembered by
all yoar; singers. Among; other things
he sau. "The three "principal sources
of damage to the voice are, first, forc
ing1 the .voice; second, forcing- the
voice; third, forcing the voice. Con
stant loud singing has certainly ruined
ninety per 'cent, of all the voices in -the
world. The way to build up a voice is
not to use the full force of the tone;
nothing more than medium at the out
side. By this the powers are grad
ually . developed and brought under
control. It is just as natural to ex-
Jpect to build an armory in a month, as
it is to build a voice under three years'
constant application. Sir Morrell
MacKenzie ..gives it as his delib
erate opinion, after a . vast ' ex
perience, that a voice . cannot be
built up in less than seven years,
but. the ;, musician, .jsaid.., that, after
fifty years' experience, he; .had found
that three ..years' practice on the
lines .... indicated above - will build
up a voice almost to its utmost artistic
capabilities.. Singing when the pupil
has a cold of any kind affecting the
I throats or chest is-highly injurious.
Practice at such times can hardly do
good, and may do serious harm. The
speaker quoted many instances where
total loss, of voice has resulted from
sinking when the vocal organs have
been affected by cold, and' he advised
-students not to sing at all until all in
flammation had passed. lie strongly
deprecated singing In chorus, an ex
cellent practice, but one attended
with serious dangers to the solo vocal
ist. If you ' .can really restrain your
ardor and zeal,' and only sing in the
most exciting passages with a moder
ate amount of vocal power, you may
do no harm, but the misfortune is that
in a chorus the members are carried
away with overzeal and emulation of
their neighbors, and in very many in
stances do mqre harm to their voices
as solo singers in five minutesthan
any teacher in the world can amend in
five years. He also called attention
to the danger of ruining the voice by
straining it while singing in .the pub
lic schools. Boys should not sing
while their voices are . changing.- His
own voice had. been a very, good one
while young; but was Tuined by
straining- while he was singing in an
English cathedral.

Appointed Professor of Arable Without
Even Knowing the Alphabet.
One of the cleverest literary swin
dlers who ever lived, says the Detroit
Free Press, was a Tifal tese named Vella,
who pretended to have an intimate ac
quaintance with Arabic, although he
did not know a. word of that language,
and was not even familiar with the al
phabet ' He arrived in Sicily about the
end of the'last century, at a time when
the barons of that. country, in order to
settle a dispute about their feudal
right, were anxious to gain certain in
formation about the kingdom in the
days of the Saracens.
-Vella , contrived, tor be appointed
translator of certain Arabic manu
scripts, and he actually produced an
alleged translation and played his part
with such . address that he obtained
honors, dignity and the prof essorsh ip of
Arabic in the. University of Palermo.
The Sicilian 'literati at last became
suspicious and endeavored to expose
the impostor, but he was defended by
some of the most eminent men of the
island, and it was with the greatesj
difficulty that an investigation was se
cured. Vella was at last, however,'
convicted and sentenced to . fifteen
years' imprisonment.
Ten days loss of time on .account of
sickness and a doctor bill to pay, is any
thing but pleasant for a man of a family
to contemplate, whether he is a laborer,
mechanic, merchant or publisher. Jas.
O. Jones, publisher ..of the leader,
Mexia, Texas, was sick in bed for ten
days with the grip during its prevalence
a year or two ago. Later in the season
he had a second attack. He says : "In
tbe latter case I used Chamberlain's
Cough Kemedy with considersible suc-cees-,
I think, only being in bed a little
over two days. The second 'attack I am
satisfied would have been equally as bad
as the first but for the use of the remedy."
It should be borne in mind that the grip
is much the same as a very severe ' cold
and requires precisely the same treat
ment. When you wish to cure, a - cold
quickly and effectually give this remedy
a trial. 25 and 50 cent bottles for sale

A. Town That Is Built Upon Three Coral
Islands. i
The "Italians, says a recent writer,
are fond of comparing Massowah to
Venice. The town is built-of . three
coral islets close to the mainland. Dur
ing late years a considerable number
of Italian buildings have arisen among
the ruins of the Egyptian occupation;
the white Egyptian palace, bailt by
the - unfortunate Arakel Pasha, who
fell at - Gudda Guddi, fighting against
the Abyssinians, on December 16, 1875,
is now the residence of the Italian gov
ernor; adjoining it is a very pretty mil
itary club, with an open-air theater;
:water surrounds you on every side, and
steamy, enervating heat makes life. a
burden to those who have just come
from more bracing climes; yet, strange
to say, Massowah is by no means un
healthy, fevers are rare; bugs, fleas
and other vermin alas! too common
OU til? high plateau are unknown
here there Is UO vegetation to decay
and cause malafia
. The only tlimculty with which Ital
ian officers have to contend is debility
and anaemia, which is at once removed
by a residence of a few weeks on the
high plateau, or a few months' leave
in Europe; in fact, they say that 51 as
sowah is healthier than any of their
military stations at home. If Masso
wah is infinitely inferior to Venice in
its external appearance, it is infinitely
more beautiful in its surroundings.
The mighty Abyssinian--mountains ap
proach quite close to the coast line at
this point, and from a stupendous and
lovely backfrrnund to the town.

Old Flemish Paintings.
Many of the masterpieces of the
great Flemish painters of the past,
which are preserved in . Belgian
churches, are kept covered with heavy
cloths,, the idea being to stimulate pub
lic curiosity and extort from visitors
an extra fee for viewing them. A re
sult of this sordid policy is that the
color of the pictures, being deprived
of light, has materially deteriorated,
and that -the pictures have "become
darkened and obscured. The great Van
Dyck "Saint Martin" in the church at
Saventhem,. has suffered so severely
that the government has interfered,
and a. similar action is expected in
other caser,-.
Beware of Ointments for Catarrh that

MISS CHICAGO'S BREEZY WAY.
Livening? Things Up Amona; the Spiritless
... Uaetts at- a Hotel.
One morning as we-were having a
melancholy breakfast as a prelude to a
melancholy day, says a writer in the
Washington Post, Miss Chicago ap
peared upon the" scene with bright
eyes, ' red cheeks, ribbons flying and'
feathers nodding.
"Why, how do you do?"- cried her
cheery, young, voice, "so glad to see
you.- Haven't heard a word from you
since we crossed on the Victoria to
gether. What are you doing.here? I
have come to console a gouty father;
am afraid it will be awfully stupid, but
come and bowl with me after break
fast and we 'will talk it over." All
this was delivered, so rapidly I had no
opportunity to. interrupt: "Bowl with
you, my dear little child?". I ' asked.
"The alleys have "been closed for
weeks. ''-"Were closed, you mean," said
Miss Chicago. "Nowthey are open,
and I have discovered twq little ne
groes, whom I'm going- to dress in red
flannel zouave suits, who wait .to do
my. bidding. We will bowl at ten,
have a Turkish bath at twelve, ride at
four, .play pool . before dinner, and
dance afterward." . .
And it was even so; Every place of
amusement connected with the hotel
had been closed. . Miss Chicago turned
the key which unlocked all the doors,
and during the rest of my stay at the.
hotel, we had the' gayest sort, of a
time."- Everybody - was. happier . be
cause of the presence of this bright
young western girl. The invalids
smiled when she . passed them,, the
servants rushed to do her bidding; the
Very animals seemed to know when
she was near. I left her, here, but I
know there was-weeping and wailing
when she came to take her departure.
