During" the summer season in Japan droughts are very frequent, " and the rice fields, before so beautiful, present-: ingr as they do all the different shades, of -green imaginable,' gradually,' lose their brilliancy of color, turn yellow and parched, and threaten the total de struction of. the" crop. Not only does the rice suffer, but the. wells dry up and necessitate the carrying of -water from long distances. ' After - waiting and hoping in vain for a downfall of rain, says a Yokohama letter, the peo ple turn out en masse to evoke the power of their deities to sentl.th.em the saving showers. A . procession is formed of perhaps two hundred men, all nearly naked, who, carrying straw emblems representing the sun with rain pouring from .it and with long streamers having prayers written on them flying in, the wind, proceed to the nearest river or bay, where the whole- company wades into the water until they are waist deep, and, sur rounding the emblems, pray aloud apd throw water on the images with both hands.. - After doing this several times the procession is reformed, when it pro ceeds to the temple to pray again. This ceremony is repeated several time, and should the rain come in abundance prayers are offered in thanksgiving. Should it be .only a shower, they blame themselves for not having prayed fervently enough and continue their devotions until a down pour takes place. Another form of devotion for the same purpose takes place at nightfall, when a long boat is filled with men and paddled swiftly across the harbor, accompanying the prayers by the regu lar beating of tomtoms and gongs. Sometimes at night, away down the bay, may be heard the weird sound of tomtoms and the voices of the men gradually growing louder" and louder as the boat approaches, each man bend ing to his paddle in regular time as it passes us swiftly and gradually disap pears in the darkness and is soon lost to sight and hearing. Girls In Alaskan Society. Visitors to Sitka pronounce it. not a bad thing at all to be a girl in Alaska soctety, for girls are a long way above par in the social swim. There are card parties and receptions, there are teas and dinners on the trim little gun boats, with men to preside at the urn and show how badly even the best of the sex do the things a woman does so gracefully. There are ' balls in ; the Russian castle on the hill, where in the 01a days the JUuscovite governors brought their high-bred wives and held carnival through the . long Alaskan winters. ' Like the Japanese, in case of company everybody borrows of every body. The governor's wife is served from her own china at the captain's dinner, and the lieutenant s bride may eat from her own wedding 'spoons at the paymaster's party, but there is less strife and envy and unchtiritableness than in social circles at the great cen ters of civilization, where everybody is strivings to outdo everybody else. The Birth of a Japanese Prince. There is great joy in the court of Japan over the birth of a young prince. He is, it is .true, only a so-called "half blood," that is, he is not the son of the empress, but of Sono Yoshmo, one of the secondary wives of the' mikado, who has already presented her liege lord with the Princesses Bune and Kane. Should the crown prince die, and no other be born, the young "half blood" could succeed to the throne; and that is the cause of the joy in the palace of the emperor. Ten days loss of time on .account of sickness and a doctor bill to pay, is any thing but pleasant for a man of a family to contemplate, whether he is a laborer, mechanic, merchant or publisher. J as O. Jones, publisher of the Leader, Mexia, Texas, was sick in bed for ten day 8 with the grip during its prevalence a year or two ago. Later in the season he had a second, attack. He says: "In the latter case I used Chamberlain's Cough Remedy with considerable suc cess, I think, only being in bed a little over two days. The second attack I am satisfied would have been equally as bad as the first but for the use of the remedy. It should.be borne in mind that the grip is much the same as a very severe cold and requires precisely the same treat ment.' Imagine 4,500- quintals," or 504,000 pounds, or 353 tons-or 113 cords of salted cod and pollock; all neatly piled up in one building, and you will have, says the Lewfston Journal, before you the largest stock of fish m the city of Portland at the nresent time. It has all been brought from Sova Scotia and Newfoundland since the 10th of Octo ber. There is one pile qf fourteen tons of specially selected codfish. They were big fellows when taken from the water ana weighed then from 40 to 80 pounds each, iow they weigh from 25 to 35 pounds apiece. When they have been stripped of " the - skin", carefully boned, trimmed into slices of faultless flesh like so much clean,, clear bread or cheese, and packed in boxes marked "boneless fish," they will weigh from 13 to 15 pounds apiece. ' Such is . the shrinkage of an 80-pound codfish into the perfect food product.. In the trim ming process about -20 . pounds of "scrap" are " removed to every 100 pounds of the boneless slices. This is, of course, good food tissue, though it looks decidedly like "leavings." It is sold for about 8 cents a pound. Coun try fish peddlers buy it, sometimes in 100 "and 150 pound lots, and sell it to farmers and villagers, to make into hash, for about 10 cents a pound. The skins are packed in barrels and sent away to Gloucester, Mass., where they are made into glue. They bring about a cent and a half a pound. The bones sell for two or three dollars a "ton and are hauled over to Cape Elizabeth to be utilized as a fort:i;.-:er tVr ealibafrr':; A Leader. A citizen of "Buffalo has found among his papers an account of the circum-. stances under which Abraham Lincoln made his maiden speech. It 'was originally printed in. the Springfield (111.) Republican, and is as' follows: , "The president of the United States made his maiden speech in Sangamon county at Pappasville (or Richland) in the year 1833. He was then a whig and a candidate for the legislature of this state. The speech is -sharp and sensible. To understand why it was so short the following facts will show: (1) Mr. Lincoln was a young man, say twenty-two years of age, and timid. (2) His friends and opponents in the joint discussions ' had rolled, the sun nearly down. Lincoln saw it was not 'the proper time then to discuss the questions fully, and hence he cut his remarks short. Probably the other candidates had wholly exhausted the subjects under discussion. . The time, according . to W. H. Herndon's infor mant who has kindly furnished this valuable reminiscence for us was 1832; it may have been 1881.. The pres ident lived at the time with James A. Hurdon, at Salem, Sangamon county, who heard the speech, talked about it, and ' knows the report to be correct. The speech, which was characteristic of the man, was as follows: ' - " 'Gentlemen, FeHow-Citizens: I pre sume you "all know who -I am. " I am humble Abraham Lincoln. . I have been solicited by my friends to become a candidate for the legislature. My politics are short and sweet, like an "old woman's i-dance." I am in favor of a national bank. I am in favor of the international improvement system and a high protective tariff. These are my sentiments and pofltical prin ciples. If elected I will be thankful. If defeated it will be all the same.' " Hon. Alexander 11. Stephens. . "I occasionally use, when my con dition requires it, Dr. Simmons Liver Regulator, with good effect. ... "Hon. Alex H. Stephens."
