BOSTON'S WEALTHY WOMEN.
Several Millionaires Among; Them, Includ
ing One with an Estate of 822,000,000. .
' One of the wealthiest women in Bos
ton is undoubtedly the widow of the
late Augustus Hemenfjway, as she was
the chief heir to an estate valued at
$23,000,000. ' Mrs. Hemengway resides
in one of the grand old houses on
Mount "Vernon street, and from her
home dispenses a wide hospitality that
includes the poor as well as the rich,
and the charities and philanthropic en
terprises in which she has1 long been
quietly interested can -only be num
bered by her nearest friends. Her nor
mal cooking school and her gymnasium
are described by the Journal as two of
her most successful undertakings.
Mrs. Quincy A. Shaw, daughter of
Prof. Louis Agassiz, has a private for
tune which enables her to dispense a
royal bounty. Her "kindergarten"
work alone is said to cost her about
$50,000 a year. .
. Mrs. Sears, the wife of J- Mont
gomery Sears, and daughter of Charles
P. Choate, of Southborp, also has a
worthy fortune in her own name.
Mrs. Sears' reputation as an artist has
been established since her notable tri
umph in winning the S500 Evans prize,
awarded by the jury of the New York
water color exhibition last year. t
Mrs. S. D. Warren, of Mount "Vernon
street, is credited with at least 3.000,
000. She owns the Androscoggin mills
and a great deal of other property.
She is exceedingly philanthropic, and
her love for pictures has led her to in
dulge in many by the most eminent
artists of the time. Mrs. Alpheus
Hardy is worth nearly $1,000,000. She is
very fond of flowers, cultivating them
with great success. A superb chrys
anthemum is named for her. Mrs. XV. H.
Slocum, daughter of Moses Williams,
is worth $800,000, and Miss Elizabeth
Brigham enjoys a share in the use of
her late brother's large estate, which,
when the last legatee shall have died,
will endow a hosyital to be called "by
the . name of its founder. There are
many women whose names do not ap
pear in the tax list because their money
is invested in government and corpora
tion bonds. In the latter case the cor
poration pays the taxes, and the names
of. individuals do not appear. There
is, however, a long list of names of
women who pay taxes on very large
sums, ranging from $100,000 to $500,000
or more.
CRUSADE AGAINST SIN.
In the islands of the sea there are
211 stations occupied by 190 mission
aries. Twelve societies are represent
ed. The converts number 100,000.
No fewer than 320 tablets have re
cently, been recovered in Palestine and
Arabia, all throwing more or less light
on contested portions of Scripture.
The tablets are nearly 4,000 years old.
During this century over IGO.000,000
copies of the word of God have been
printed in over 350 different languages
and dialects. No very important
tongue of the earth, is now unrepre
sented. " .
In India to-day to be able to add med

Ten days loss of time on account of

thing but pleasant for a man of a family
to contemplate, whether he is a laborer,
mechanic, merchant or publisher. Jaa.
O. Jones, publisher of the Leader,

days with the grip during its prevalence
a year or two ago. Later in the season
he had a second attack. He says : "In
the latter case I used Chamberlain's
Cough Remedy with considersible suc

over two days. Tbe second attack I am
satisfied would have been equally as bad
as the first bat for the nee of the remedy

TALK ABOUT WEATHER.
New, York Man Who Tells the Tempera
ture by Tasting the Atmosphere.
There is a man in New York who is
an expert weather sampler, and just
as the tea expert tastes his brands to
appraise- them, so this man tastes the
weather, lie will at any time of the
day, or at any place, so long as it is in
the open air, taste the atmosphere and
tell you what the temperature is. He
never gets more than two degrees
away and seldom moro than one. The
other day, sa3Ts the Tribune, a friend
played a joke on him by -using a thermometer-
which was not in working
order. The sampler, after tasting the
weather, said that it was thirty-one
degrees above zero. The thermometer
said it was thirty-seven, ' but the ex
pert ' would not be convinced that he
could be wrong. He insisted that they
walk along until they found another,
thermometer. They found it and it
registered thirty-one degrees.
"When the leaves turn early," says a
Michigan man, "we have a hard win
ter. When they turn late we have an
open winter. One would suppose that
the time at which winter set in would
have everything to do with the turn
ing of the leaves, and it is known that
some open winters set in early and
some cold ones set in late. But I have
noticed that the time of cold weather
beginning does not mark the turning
of the leaves. The present winter set
in early in Michigan. There was un
usually cold weather in October, but
the leaves did not turn until a month
later than the average time. All lum
bermen arranged for an open winter
'on that account,' and they have not
been mistaken. In fact, I have never
known the sign to fail."
Beware of Ointments for Catarrh that
Contain Mercury,
As mercury will surely destroy the sense
of smell and completely derange the
whole system when entering it through
the mucous surfaces. Such articles
should never be used except on pre
scriptions from reputable physicians, as
the damage they will do is ten-fold to
tbe good you can possibly derive from
them.. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufac
tured by F. J: Cheney & Co., Toledo, O.,
contains no mercury, and is taken in
ternally, acting directly upon the blood
and mucous surfaces of tbe system. In
buying Hall's Catarrh Cure be sure you

The weed, or stramonium, to give it
the botanical name, when in flower, its
fragrant, lily-like blossoms are the
whiter against the vigorous-looking
leaves of dark green. A rare variety
has a flower of pale purple... The pop

the tradition is that af ten the destruo

its ruins filled with thickets of this

LARGE SAILING - SHIPS.
Some of the Mammoth Krelght Vessels of
" .. . Recent Build. ,
The largest sailing ship afloat is the
French five-master La France, launched
in 1890 on the . Clyde, and owned by
Messrs. Ant Dom liordes et Fils, who
possess a large fleet of sailing vessels.
In 1891 she came from Iquique to Dun
kirk in 105 -days, with 6,000 tons of
nitrate, yet she. was stopped on the
Tyne when proceeding to sea with 5,500
tons of coal and compelled to take out
500 tons on the ground that she was
overladen. ' - -
There is not, a single five-masted sail
ing ship under the British flag, says
Chambers' Journal. The United States
has two five-masters, the Louis, of 830
tons, and the Gov. Ames, of 1,778 tons,
both fore-and-aft schooners, a rig pe
culiar to the American coast. Ships
having five masts can be counted on
the - fingers of -one. hand, but, strange
to say, the steamship Coptic, of the
Shaw, Savill & Albion company, on
her way to New Zealand, in December,
1890, passed the Gov. Ames "in 14 de
grees south 34 degrees west, bound
for California, and two days later, in 6
degrees south 31 degrees west, the
French' five-master La France, bound
south.
Passengers and crew of the .Coptic
might travel over many a weary league
of sea and never again see two such
excellent object lessons in the growth
of sailing ships in quick succession,
The largest three-masted sailing ship
is the Ditton, of 2.850 tons.
The experience of Geo. A. Apgar, of
German Valley, N. J., is well worth re
membering. He ' was troubled with
chronic diarrhoea and doctored for five
months and was treated by four differ

began using Chamberlain's Colic, Chol

bottle effected a complete cure. It is
