Of these some are doubles by nature; others, impelled by the love of notoriety, pretend to be the person they especially envy or admire. Not long ago, says Tid-Bits, a German- American made himself conspicuous in London by posing as the duke of Teck. He played the role without in terruption for some time, but finally his conduct became so erratic that he was arrested on the charge of swin dling'. The imperial house of Austria has also a "double." At Brunn, while, a performance was being held in the City theater, a well-dressed, handsome young man entered and desired to be shown to the mavor's box, where ho introduced himself as the crown prince of Austria. The mayor saw at a glance that he had to deal with a madman; as he could not remove him without a dis turbance he entertained him until the end of the first act, when he succeeded in getting rid of the soi-disant prince, who subsequently proved to be a mer chant's son. Natalie, ex-queen of Servia, may also .claim a double. The person so desig nated carries on a small business, and except that her name is Nathalie there seems to be no resemblance between her and thd ex-queen. Still; she is known far and wide as her double, and for this reason: A practical joker, learning that the little tradeswoman intended to visit a certain town, an nounced that "Nathalie" would honor it with her presence. Naturally thinking that he referred to the queen, thousands gathered at the railway station on the day specified, only to find that they', had been hoaxed. Everyone in Copenhagen has heard of the czar's double, a banker by the name of Carlsen. He so strongly re sembles the czar as to be frequently mistaken for him. This flattered his vanity, and he endeavored to counter feit .his illustrious model in all re spects. When it was announced that Alexander was on his way to Copen hagen, Carlsen would appear at the head of the procession in a launch ex actly like the czar's and later . on would drive his four-in-hand through the crowded streets, bowing right and left to the cheering populace. Being rich he scattered money freely, which fact added to his popularity. But the adulation he received was too much for the poor man; his reason tottered: he imagined that ho- really wan the czar, and the nihilists were plotting against him. lie finally became in sane, and was sent to a madhousi-. where he will remain while life lasts. GETTING RID OF THE BEARD. Electricity Will Do the Work, Hut Not Without Considerable C'ntt. The hairspf man is gradually disap pearing; before the march of civilization,- says the New York Sun.. -Nature, who is an economical dame, bus grad ually removed the hair from the top of the head where it is no lonyer useful. Still, kindly'-.intentioned, a deeorativtr fringe is left for ornament.- !M;m him self would gladly -have compromised with nature, and bartered some of the growth on his face for a few handful of hair on his head. Nature, however, knew the value of shaving1 as discip line and refused to .interfere. Now, it appears, man sees the way to estab lish a permanently clean face for him- rself. No more early rising- for a ma tutinal shave or dallying in . barber shops awaiting turn. The method is simple but expensive. It is done with the electric needle at a cost of about three dollars a- hair, a decline j from the .first rates. " The operation takes time. Owing to the strain on the operator's eyes, the removal can be done only in patches unless a relay of physicians can be provided, r The oper ation is ""painless, as the ground has been prepared by cocaine. With the later improvements iu electric lights and magnif ying mirrors the time may come that a man will eradicate the brambles of his face as easily as a farmer mows down a hedge row. A Roman youth used to receive his toga virilis the day of his first shave. The occasion was a fete. Cornelia, Lcsbia, Flavia and the rest had been hem stitching and feather-stitching his toga in secret moments for weeks before. In the new day the occasion will doubt less be the same. The girls,- having saved their pocket money, will have ready an electric needle, ivory mounted or in repousse silver, with monogram, when the youth's first growth is suffi ciently sighted for removal. Thus far it is easy to predict an aristocracy of smooth faces. Even at wholesale rates the effacement of the beard is bound for a long time to be beyond the reach, of the multitude. 'This of itself is cer tain to make smooth faces fashionable. Destitution In England. Thirty-one persons died of actual starvation in London during last year, etfght "infants and twenty-three adults. Not one of the unfortunate persons had ever applied to the parish authori ties for relief, and in only one case had the deceased person been at any. time the inmate of a poorhouse or hospital. All were people of unquestioned re spectability, who had come upon hard times and whose pride and horror of accepting public alms overcame the sharpest pangs of hunger. A sample story is in this official record: "James McDonald, age about ninety years; date of inquest, February !? i De ceased would not apply to- the parish; verdict, starvation." ' , ; i'-.il-i. Many people imagine that by blow ing their breath on the blade of a knife they can tell whether the blade is steel or pot inetaL. Now, a person's breath will adhere to a pot-metal blade and fade away the same, as on . steel, but nine out of ten men don't know this, and that H the reason why so many people carry inferior poeket knives. The most wonderful stories are told of the disinfecting power of sea water after electrical treatment, as exhibit ed at Havre, where experiments upon a very large scale have been made under the direction of M. Hermite, the inventor of the system. The following is an extract from the special corre spondence of the London Standard: "A central station for the proper electrolyzing of sea water had been es tablished at Havre, on Qui Lombardie, near the Angoulemc bridge, and pipes in connection with it had been laid through all the streets of the St. Fran cois quarter, inhabited by some twelve thousand people of the poorest classes, and formerly the hot-bed of every in fectious disease. The electrolyzed sea water forced' through the pipes had, however, effected a marvelous change., The streets watered with the disinfect ing liquid, by means of hose connected with the pipes, had lost, that putrid odor which formerly made them not only repugnant, but an' ever-present danger in the very center of the town. In addition to this, two of the most insalubrious houses in the district had been chosen by M. David, the town architect, for the application of the Hermite system to dwellings. One of them was situated at No: 24 Rue de la Fontaine, and the' other at 35 Rue d'Edreville. A large tank, connected with the electrolyzed sea-water, mains, had been placed at the top of each of these six-story buildings, and pipes from the tank carried down to flush the closets and sinks on the various floors. In the case of the house No. 21 Rue de la Fontaine, the now odorless water from the syphons of the closets and sinks was conducted through pipes to the street gutter, down which it ran some distance before it ultimately fell into the sewer. The object of this ar rangement was to offer the public a constant, visible and olfactory proof of the purifying qualities -of- electro lyzed sea water. . The disinfecting liquid, so to say, consumed the sewage matter, as well as the microbes it con tained, and in passing along the gut ter and ' through the sewers it con tributed to the disinfection of both of them by the chlorine it still contained, With the Hermite system all the sew age water . could, without inconven ience, be allowed.to now into the sea, or. even into rivers, for it purifies in stead of contaminating them." Ten days loss of time on' account of sickness and a doctor bill to pay, is any thing but pleasant for a man of a family to contemplate, whether he is a laborer, mechanic, merchant or publisher. Jas O. Jones, publisher of the Leader, Mexia, Texas, Was sick in bed for ten days with the grip during its prevalence j a year or two ago. Later in the season j he had a second attack. He says : "In the latter case I used- Chamberlain's i Cofieh Remedy with considersible snc- - cet-s, I think, only being in bed a little i'over two days. The second attack I am pati.-fied would have been equally as bad as the first bat for the useof the remedy It should be borne in mind that the grip is much the same as a very severe cold and requires precisely the same treat ment. When you wish to cure a cold quickly and effectually give this remedy a trial. 25 and 50 cent bottles for sale by Blakeley & Houghton, druggists. FRESH FACTS FROM EUROPE. A graduate' of a theological semina ry in one of tne eastern states says that in that institution the candidates for the ministry were obliged to un dergo a very trying ordeal. Each of them was compelled to preach a short extempore sermon, in the chapel, to the bishop and one of the professors. who formed the sole congregation, and who occasionally interrupted and criticisea tne. sermon, unc aay a can didate, a young man hardly out of his teens, who was by no means a ready speaker, overwhelmed by nervousness, be.ean stammering: "I will divide my congregation into two the converted and the unconverted." -This was too much for the bishop's senseof humor. "I think, sir," he exclaimed, "that as there are only two of us, yo u had bet ter say which is which." How Swimmers Drown. - ' The Northwestern Lancet offers a new explanation of the sudden drown ing of good swimmers, hitherto attrib uted to cramp. There is nothing in a cramp in the leg to prevent an ordinary swimmer supporting himself n . the water 'by his hands or on his back, nor to. cause him to throw up his hands and sink once for all, like a stone. Such cases are attributed to perfora tion of the eardrum, through which the excess, of "-water pressure occasions vertigo and unconsciousness, and a practical caution results to persons having such perforation to protect their ears with a stopper of cotton when bathing. ' The experience of Geo. A. Apgar, of German Valley, N. J., is well worth re membering. He was troubled with chronic diarrhoea and doctored for five months and was treated by four differ ent doctors without benefit. He then began using Chamberlain's Colic, Chol era and Diarrhoea Remedy, of which one bottle enected a complete cure. . it is for sale by Blakeley & Houghton, drug gists.
