SUICIDE PARTIES.
Entertainments That Would Not Find
Favnr with. American Olrls.
Mr. Medhurst, formany years British
consul at Shanghai tells, in the Lon
don Million, of a. singular "eard of in
vitation" which he once received in
- China. It was from a lady, intimating1
her intention to commit suicide on a
specified date. . She was very young
and attractive,, and belonged to a
wealthy family, but the Chinese gen
tleman to whom she had been affianced
from childhood havinpr died just before
the date fixed for their nuptials, she
gave out that she deemed it her duty
to render her widowhood irrevocable
by dying1 with her betrothed. So she
sent cards around to the local gentry
giving1 notice of her purpose. No at
tempt was made by her relatives or
the local authorities to frustrate her
-design, though Mr. Medhurst appealed
to the mandarins, the general opinion
being that she was about to perform a

day named, the woman did deliberate
ly sacrifice her life in the presence of
thousands of spectators. A stage was
erected in the open Qelds, with a tent
ed frame over it, from which was sus
pended a slip of scarlet crepe. One
end of this slip she fastened round her
neck, and then, embracing a little boy
presented by one of the bystanders,
she mounted a chair and resolutely
jumped off, "her little clasped hands
saluting the assemblage as her body
twirled round - with the tightening
cord." The woman was not hounded
on by a fanatic mob, as was the prac
tice at suttees in Indio. but immolation
appeared to be an entirely voluntary
act. Sacrifices of this ltind, according
to JYir. jMetinurst, are not uncommon m
certain parts of China, and, strange to
say, they are rewarded with monu
ments sometimes erected by order of
the emperor.
A NOVEL OCEAN RACE.
The Steamers Fire ITp Till the Draft Alone
.lct;s in Tons of Coal.
In these days of ocean racing the
speeding is nearly always done against
time, but there wan a battle royal
ended a few weeks ago lietween the
American steamships Carib Prince and
Muriel, says the Cardiff Mail, that
would have started the gfooseiiesh of
excitement on the most collected of
seamen. The Carib Prince left Dem
rara on November 17 and jogged
" leisurely away on her journey north
ward. Three days later the Muriel set
sail for Uarbadoes and journeyed in
the same, direction. Both vessels were
about abreast at this time but sepa
rated by a wide patch of ocean. Three
-days' later, however, they narrowed
we angles of tiieir courses down to
" he apex, and when they were in sight
ui eacii oilier it was pun cievu pun
baker for the lead.
Down In their vessels' holds their en
trines bann-cd and rattled in countless
revolutions, twisting their screws as
they were never twisted before, and
out of the mouths of their smokestacks
v-iJiiHic inky clouds. Neck and neck they
cams up the coast,- and every man
jack aboard. . in the parlance of the
tea, "rooted -hard" for, victory. In the
stokehold, recording1 to one ,of the
firemen. t,h.y didn't have to shovel in
coal they just opened th'e furnace
tloors and the draft licked in tons at
a time. For seven days they were in
sight of each other, and the Muriel,
with a magnificent burst of speed,
crawled up on her rival and then quick
ly ran out of sight.
Ten days loss of time on account of
' sickness and a doctor bill to pay, is any
thing but pleasant for a man of a family
to contemplate, whether he is a laborer,
mechanic, merchant or publisher. Jag.
O. Jones, publisher of the Leader,
Mexia, Texas, was sjck in bed for ten
-days with the grip during its prevalence
a year or two ago. "Later in the eeaeon
he had a second .attack. He eays: "In
the latter case. I used Chamberlain's
Cough Remedy -with considersible sue-
cess, I think, only being in bed a- little
over two days. The second attack I am
satisfied would have been equally as bad
as the first but for the use of the remedy.
It should be borne in mind that the grip
is much the same as a very severe cold
and requires precisely the eame treat
ment. When you wish to. cure a cold
quickly and effectually give this remedy
a trial. 25 and 50 cent bottles for sale

BRUIN WAS KNOWING AND BOLD.'
It Was Against Orders to Shoot. So Be
.. Balded the Soldiers' Camp Nightly.
."yhen -I was in Yellowstone Park
this summer," said a Wyoming Valley -man,
"one of the gamekeepers told me
about a bear that worried a camp of
government soldiers almost' to despera
tion for several weeks. Late one night
a bear waddled into camp, ripped open
a tent, put the soldiers to flight, pot
what he wanted to eat, and went away.
The next night the bear came around
again, smashed down a tent and stole a
smoked ham. .Under the park rules
the soldiers were prohibited from fir
ing at the thievish brute, as well as
from jabbing a bayonet into him, and
the only thing they could do when the
bear appeared and went to. helping
himself to rations was to get out of his
way. Night after night the bold beast
made a raid on the camp and ruined a
tent or two. My informant said, that
the bear acted as if he knew that the
soldiers daren't fire at him, and that
on each visit he became more saucy
and destructive than before. When
the bear's raids had become unbeara
ble the commandant sent the facts to
the secretary of the interior and asked
what to do. Word came back to shoot
the .bear, and that night, when bruin
strode boldly into camp, the Boldiers
put an end to his career by riddlinor
him with bullets."
