INFLICTED CONSIDERABLE LOSS
Peixoto Will Drop Dynamite Bombs
From a Balloon Report of
Resignation Denied.
Rio Janeiro (via Montevideo), Jan.
II. A letter received in this city eays
Mello was near Desterro with the Aqui
daban engaged in fitting ont steamers to
convey troops to Rio, and it was ex
pected he would sail north January 5th.
It is reported the insurgent forces de
stroyed the government forts on Eu-
genho island, and inflicted considerable
loss to government forces. It is ru
mored he captured three field ' pieces on
Moncangue island. The insurgents sub
sequently retired from both islands.
Felxoto'a Dynamite Balloon.
Montbvidio, Jan. 11. Your corres
pondent in Rio sends word that the diri
gible balloon which President Peixoto.
ordered constructed for use in the ' cam
paign is almost completed. It differs
from other war balloons in having an
electric motor. This balloon is made of
silk, in spherical form, so that its equi
poise is constantly maintained. No
metal other than aluminum is used in
its construction. Dynamite bombs will
be dropped from the balloon on the re
bel fleet. A messenger from Admiral
DeGama carrying "a note to Admiral
Mello has been arrested in Rio. .
Valllant Taken to Prison.
Paris, Jan. 11. Valllant, the anarch
ist, sentenced to death yesterday, was
taken today to the prison of LaRaquette,
where it is expected he will be executed
within the prison walls, not in public as
is customary. If Vaillant continues to
appeal to the court of cessation he will
be executed in about 10 days. An effort
will be made to secure his pardon.
ENGLISH COMMENT ON THE VERDICT.
London, Jan. 11. The .Pali Mall Ga
zette, commenting on the Vaillant ver
dict, says it is significant of the flabbi
ness of the times that people should
praise the jury's courage in rendering a
verdict against Vaillant, who confessed
and boasted of his crime.
The Westminster Gazette says Vail-
Iadt is a specimen of the modern type of
literate criminal. His career is the re
sult of criminal instinct. Education
does not eradicate the taint.
' In tne Senate.
Washington, Jan. 11. In the senate,
Cullom reported favorably from the
committee on commerce the senate bill
granting the Des Moines Rapids Power
Company the right to construct a dam
and power station in the Mississippi
river in Hancock county, 111. The bill
was amended by requiring the work to
begin within two years, and be com
pleted within four years. On objection
of Hawley of Connecticut, the bill went
over.
In tne Home.
Washington, Jan. 21. In the house,
after routine, business, the tariff debate
was resumed. Breckinridge, democrat,
of Kentucky, took the floor and was fol
lowed by Dingley of Maine. '

About a year ago I took a violent at
tack of la grippe. I coughed day and
night for about six weeks ; my wife then
suggested that I try Chamberlain's
Cough Remedy. . At first I could see no
difference, but still kept trying it, and
soon found that it was what I needed.
If I got no relief from one dose I took
another, and it was only a few days un
til I was free from-the cough. I think
people in general ought to know the
value of this remedy, and I take pleas

A Daring Bank Robbery.
City of Mexico, Jan. 11. The Na
tional bank of Mexico is the victim of a
remarkable robbery. Tuesday one of the
tellers was counting out the coin by pil
ing up the heavy sacks of silver, each
containing 1,000 silver dollars, when a
well-dressed young man sauntered into
the room, and while attention -was di
rected elsewhere, picked up one of the
sacks and strolled out. Beckoning to a
burden-carrier, who was waiting for a
job on the streetcorner, he handed " him
the sack and leisurely led' tbe way
along the crowded streets for a block to
the nearest street-car line. Here he
stopped a passing car, and tossing a real
to the burden-carrier, quietly took a seat
in the middle of the car with the stolen
sack of money in plain eight by his side.
Passengers on the car thought he was a
paymaster or something of that sort.
After riding to the suburb of Tuculbasa
he left the car and escaped.

Chattanooga, Ga., Jan. 11. Charles
Oscar Keller was yesterday sentenced to
seven years in prison for absconding
with $2700 agency funds of the Chatta
nooga Brewing' Company. Kellar ad
mitted his defalcation, but charged that
the money was restolen from him by a
woman who was once the rage as a
dancing girl of the New York variety
stage. Kellar speaks 11 languages flu
ently. , He was born in Berlin, served as
a spy in the Turko-Rassian war, and is
reported to have done time in a Siamese
prison. At the time of his arrest, he
was conducting a detective agencv in
San Francisco, and a telegram sent by
himself to the Chattanooga police au
thorities led to his discovery.
Cordrajr Shot by Accident.
William F. Cordray, brother of John
F. Cordray, at 5 o'clock last evening
shot himself in the left breast above the
heart with a revolver in his rooms 247
First street, where he resides with his
wife and two children.
The shooting was unquestionably the
result of an accident. Mr. Cordray kept
a pistol for the purpose of shooting rats,
with which the premises were greatly
infested. He had the pistol out, his
wife said, and was thoughtlessly whirl
ing it around in his hand after the man
ner of a cowboy, when by some accident
the weapon was 'discharged with the
result given.
The Burgeons attending him last night
did not probe for the "bullet, and believe
the wound to be a fatal one. The victim
of tbe shot is an expert electrician and
engineer, in which capacities hejhad long
been employed in Cordray's theater.
At 2 o'clock this afternoon Mr. Cor
dray was resting quite easy, considering
the gravity of the case, and the attend
ing surgeons at that hour believed his
chances to live or die were about even.
