Princess Sibylle of Hesse, whose en gagement to the czarevitch was repeat edly announced last summer owing1 mainly to the fact that she was staying1 with her motlrer at tne court ot Uen mark during the entire period of the Russian visit there is a very attrac tive girl, and in many respects it mast be a matter for regret that the rumors on the subject have not as yet been confirmed. The princess is a niece of Queen Louise of Denmark, the sister of her father, the late Landgrave of Hesse. These Hesses are only dis tantly related to the grand duke of Hesse-Darmstadt; and whereas the latter is the head of the younger branch of the ancient house of Hesse, Princess Sibylle's people constitute the $4 m ;MU mm n 1 ! 1 PRINCESS SIBYLLE OF HE8SE. senior branch, although they are no longer a reigning family. Her German birth and Lutheran religion might not be considered a bar to her union with the czarevitch by the Russian people, but the hereditary affliction of her house, namely, blind ness, would lead them to look askance at such a marriage. The elder of 'her two surviving brothers is completely blind, while her other brother, who married the younger sister of Emperor William of Germany, last January, is on the eve of becoming so. He has teen forced to leave the army and to place himself in the hands of the lead ing oculists of the day, who express little hope of saving his sight. Princess .Sibylle's elder sister, Elizabeth, the widow of the late prince of Anhalt, is almost entirely blind, while her eldest ' brother committed suicide in a most mysterious way some 'five years ago, ; half way between Singapore and Batavia, when threatened with the Joss of his sight. , Jt TEACHER AND PUPIL. v The Fmnfc Speech of a Repentant Scotch Professor. A well-known Scotch professor was noted for his hot temper and vehement candor, as well as for his profound scholarship. At the opening of a college term the "boys observed that he was unusually irritable and harsh. The applicants for admission ranged themselves for examination in a line below his desk, v "Show your papers! he ordered. , One lad held his paper up awkwardly in his left hand. 'Hold it up properly, sir, in your right hand!" commanded the master. The new pupil muttered something, but kept his left hand raised. "The right hand, ye loon!" thundered the professor. The.boy, growing very pale, lifted his right arm. It was a burned stump. The band was gone. The boys burst into indignant hisses, but the professor had leaped down from the platform and had thrown his arm about the boy's r houlders. "Eh, laddie, -'jrgive me!" he cried, breaking into broad Scotch, as he al ways did when greatly " excited. "I didna ken! But," turning to the class, with smimming eyes: I thank God He ' has given me gentlemen to teach who can ca' me to account when I go astray." "After that day." wrote one of the boys, years afterward, "every man there was his firm friend and liegeman. He had won us all by that one frank speech. The change which fifty years has made in the relation between teacher and taught has been very great. The boy of the last century looked up to his master with the fear of the wait ing lash, below all other emotions or motives. The best teacher of to-day is well de scribed in the words of a great German educator, as one "who takes the posi - tion of an older kinsman to his pupils; climbing the same ladder as they, but a little higher up. But the boy who trusts his teacher as the truest of gentlemen is learning from him something better than Latin and Greek. Youth's Companion. A Million Friends. The Land of Ttie Setting Sun Is still a mysterio-ofs and. unexplored country to many a resident of the cyclone-ridden East and the "barren Rocky-mountain region, but who, though possessed of a desire to see the great Empire of the Pacific, has up till now failed to muster the necessary energy to make the trip. It seems to them like a great journey, that along the way still linger the pitfalls and dangers of border days. But this Empire, has made gigantic strides since 1849. It is not now alone the land of gold and glorious sunsets, but a stretch of country given to mellow fruitfulness, comprising all products from the luscious rig and orange of the tropics to the mammoth red apples of colder climes. Wasco Cou nty, O re go n . There is still thousands of acres of Government land left in Wasco county, capable of raising apples, peaches, grapes, prunes, and small fruits. Three hundred dollars clear money has been made from an acre of prunes, and $1,000 an acre from the humble strawberry. It will pay, those who imagine that Uncle Sam's domain is exhausted, to make a trip to the "golden west" and see for themselves all that is to be known. There is no excuse for putting off this trip till a later time. An attraction is presented which of itself will pay for the trip.
