TRAIN ROBBERS AND WRECKERS.
They Mnilc KlRhty-Two Attempts In the
l irt Six Months nf IHU.t.
The Knilrond Gazette has collected
statistics of train wrecking and train
Tolibinp for the llrst nix months of
1S00. which yield some surprising re
Milts. One is accustomed to think of
train wreckers and train robbers as in
vesting sparsely settled western
States, but the statistics show on the
contrary that such crimes i are most
prevalent in well-settled states.
The Gazette's figures show sixty-one
r.ttempts to wreck trains and twenty
one attempts to rob them. Massachu
setts and Illinois head the list in the
number of attempts to wreck trains,
and Ohio follows. In these three ad
vanced states were made more than
one-half of all the attempts to wreck
trains, and the state of Now York fol
lows. The only explanation offered
for this preponderance of train wreck
ing' in well settled and, generally
speaking, well-governed states, is that
the mileage of railroads is greater in
thoi-,0 states than others, and that
tramps, who are responsible for most
attempts to wreck trains, flourish in
thickly-settled regions.
'i'Jie geographical distribution of at
tempts at train robbing are still more
curious. Iowa heads the list: Indian
territory and Oklahoma taken together
have the same number; Texas follows,
and .then come Kansas and Nebraska.
Sixty-seven per cent, of all the train
robberies or attempted train robberies
occurred in these four states and two
territories.

' One of the most interesting places in
the capital city, according to the New
York Advertiser, is the museum in the
tlead letter oflice. Several Indian
liatehets give to a section of the cabi
net an archa'ological appearance, and
a pair of Indian pipes o. red sandstone
-cross each other in peaceful style. A
rrare curiosity is a piece of parchment
-on which is penned the Lord's Prayer
in fifty-four languages. It is said to
be a duplicate of a parchment which
liangs in St. Peter's at Rome. It came
Xo this country in the mail from Eu
xope in 1842, and, as it was never
claimed and its origin could not be
.traced, it was sent to the dead letter
o2ice. where it has been on exhibition
-ever since. One of the prettiest things
in'the cabinet is a lady's fan made of
stork feathers, the plumes being rarer
.and richer than the finest ostrich
plumes.
In an envelope is a lock of dark
brown hair. An inscription on the cn
' velojie, in a nervous hand, reads: "This
-contains my hair. Charles Cfuiteau."
It was nut into tho mails bv the mur
derer of President Garfield, without
miy address, just as it appears in the
.cabinet.
t Ol icw years ago there came to the
dead letter oflice a tin can upon which
no address could be found. The can i
was opened, and sixteen lively looking
rattlesnakes made their escape. There
was a stirring scene in the dead letter ,
-oflice for a few minutes.
