Sir. Oswald has the reputation of be
inp the "hardest tighter" at the bar.
Various stories illustrative o his per
sistency have recently appeared in the
papers, but I have not seen the" follow
ing, which is. perhaps, the best: Mr.
Oswald was arguing a case in the court
of nppeal at preat length. Already
the court had intimated pretty clearly
that it had heard enough, but Mr. Os
wald had treated these intimations in
his usual manner, and went on raising
point after point. ,
"Really," at last one of the lord jus
tices remonstrated "really, Mr. Os
wald, if you intended to rely on these
points you shoul have raised them in
the court below."
"So I did, my lord," replied Mr. Os
wald, "but their lordships stopped
me."
"They stopped you, did they?" in
quired Lord Esher, eagerly. "How did
they do it?" London Truth.

What Make IT Thirsty.
Thirst is simply a sensation by which
a lack of fluids in the system is made
known, and in a state of health it is
a generally faithful indication of the
wants of Che body. Natural thirst is
first indicated by a peculiar dryness of
the mouth and fauces, caused by a fail- 1
ure of the pharyngeal membrane to
pecrete a due amount of liquids, but if
fluids were to be introduced directly
into the stomach through a tube, and
not by way of the fauces as lias been
done in some unusual cases the im

allays the sense of thirst, from which
it has been supposed that the sensa-,
tion of thirst is in the nerves of the i
stomach and that the throat-sensation '
is a kind of reflex action.
