THE HORNED TOAD.
It Hears a ISennirltuble ltrMMulilunce to
tho Ancient Trlrpnitops.
There litis boon considerable discus
sion in the .sciontilie import of Into
about the curious lmbit of the "horned
toads," found in Arizona and Mexico,
of spurting blood from their eyes when
disturbed. Many witnesses ajjree in
the assertion that the little animals
really possess this power. According
to one observer, the blood, or tho liquid
resembliuf,' blood, comes from little
orifices just above and behind the
eyes, and it appears to have a stupefy
ing effect upon an animal covered
with it.
Tho horned toad, says the Youth's
Companion, is a stratifre-lookiiifr crea
ture, and in certain ways its appearance
recalls one of the most remarkable
monsters that in past geological apes
lived in tho western part of America
tho triceratops of Prof. Marsh.
This yigantic animal, whoso name
means "three-horned face," had its
skull inclosed in a bony helmet on the
upper part of which, over tho nose,
were three stout horns. The head of
one of these monsters is no less than
ciffht foe', long.
When a horned toad is laid upon the
head of the triecratopa the resemblance
is quite striking, an if this little modern
inhabitant of some of tho candy plains
of tho west were a miniature reproduc
tion, with variations, of tho wonderful
beast that roamed there in ancient
times. ""
PLUCK OF AN OPERA SINGER.
Hon- Kubtnl Once Itrokr Ills Collar Hone,
Hut Finished the Performance.
"Fifty years ago European audiences
listened with rapt admiration to Hu
bini, a tenor of whom it was said that,
though he himself could not act, ho
made hia voice act for him, says a
writer in tho Philadelphia Press. The
intensity of expression lie gave to his
voice, the judicious use of the tremolo,
and the management of light and
shade produced a thrilling effect. Hut
his best vocal feat consisted in taking
the bass of the upper stave without
preparation, thus retaining it for a
long time, and then letting it imper
ceptibly die away. The listeners could
.hardly believe their ears. The adven
tturous are always on the edge of dan
- ger On one occasion Hubini. after re
peating this vocal feat, and being a
second time encored, found himself
unable to produce the e.-pjated note.
.Determined not to fail, he gathered up
Vii.s vocal strength and made a supreme
effort. The note came with its wont
ed nower, brilliancy and duration, but
at the cost of a broken collar bone. A
surgeon examined the singer and
found that the tension of the lungs
had been too powerful for the strength
-.of his collar bone. ' Two months' rest
would bo required to reunite the clav
icle, and this the singer declared to be
impob&ible, as he had only finished sev
eral days of ii long engagement.
"Can" I sing at all with a broken col
lar bone?" he asked.
"Yes: it will make no difference in
your voice," answered th. surgeon.
'.Hut you must avoid lifting heavy
weights, and any undue exertion
above all, you must leave the H Hat
.alone." '
Jlubini continued to sing with a
broken clavicle until the termination
of the engagement.
