Sam Shade, of Grants Pass, 50 years
of a-fjo, was seized with cramps and
drowned in two feet of water in full view
of his family.
Maggie Durst was yesterday adjudged
insane by Justice Kuiuht, ex-oflicio
county judge, and was taken to Salem
by Sheriff Ford.
At the coroner's inquest held over the
body of Lieut. Nelson, A. T. Workman
testified that ho first saw Nelson leaning
over the tongueof a caisson and scullling
with two members of the opposing foice,
who weie attempting to prevent the'
capture of the gun by Lieutenant Nel
son's company. "Workman ran (o
Nelson's assistance, and just after his
arrival heard him say: "Let me loose.
I am hurt." lie was allowed to recline
on the ground, and his wound examined.
Dr. Macruni wan sent for, and arriving n
few minutes later had Nelson removed
to his tent. "Workman is of tiie opinion
that the fatal shot was fired by a member
of the opposing force whose name and
identity lie does not know.

IHop culture is a leading industry in
-eome sections of the state. Crops this
year will be abundant.
Nearly a dozen principal business
" houses were burned Tuesday morning
at Fairfield. There was only a bucket
brigade to fight the flames which soon
got beyond control. The total loss is
. about $112,000.

where two women, one of them sick'
were alone. He quickly sized up the
situation, and as the occupants of the
bouse were too frightened to disturb
him, he coolly set the table from the
cupboard, ate a hearty meal and depart
ed in peace.
Forest firera are raging in the woods
about Seuth Bend, and there are fears
that portions of the town will be burned
if the dry weather continues. A number
of settlers have lost their cabins and
others are not only anxious for their
homes, but for the hemlock bark they
have peeled for market, and which is
now dry.

of MoKecsport, Pennsylvania, in the1
