Ah How, a New York Chinaman,
bung and killed himself because a white
girl, known as Nellie Lee, had deserted
him for nnotttcr Chinaman.
Voorhees, with a free-coinage record
of twenty years, lias surprised his for
mer friends by declaring for the uncon
ditional repeal of the Sherman act.
The coming week may see the bill to
permit national banks to increase the
issue of bank notes forcetl to a vote in
the senate, and the indications are it
will receive a majority vote.
The People's National and the Union
National bank of Denver, resumed yes
terday. Three other national banks,
which are still closed, are expected to
resume some time this week.
Crazed by the excessive U39 of liquor,
Douglas Curtis, a Chicago switclithrower
in the employ of the Western Indiana
railroad, murdered his 7-year-old
daughter, desperately wounded his wife
and then blew out his brains.
In the senate, a bill in the interest of
the California midwinter international
exhibition, authorizing the transfer to
San Francisco from Chicago of dutiable
goods on exhibition and of foreign em
ployes, was taken up and passed.
Condy McGrourfy, a mine boy, 13
years old, fell 2S0 feet down a mine shaft
.on Saturday night, in Wilkesbarre, Pa.
xSia dog aroused the neighborhood. He
was found at the bottom of the shaft
, '.badly bruised but alive. He may live.
.The managers of the midwinter fair
skate it will do no good for men to come
to San Francisco for employment, as
there are already more men there than
can be used. There are at present about
10,000 men out of employment, and
5,000 have already registered as appli
cants for work.
XeoTi SI. Carrier, of Quebec, Canada,
;ls under arrest in Denver, charged with
c forgery, after an exciting chase of four
months. Up to last May Carrier was a
prosperous merchant, hut through ex
pensive living was led into the crime for
which he is charged. By means of false
bills of lading he converted seventy-five
carloads of flour to his own use and fled
the country. Altogether he is supposed
to have obtained $200,000.
The new Lincoln monument at Edin
burgh, Scotland, was unveiled yesterday
afternoon. The monument represents
Lincoln freeing the slaves. It is fifteen
feet in height. The bronze figure is life
size. At the feet of the president is a
figure representing a treed slave and
battle flags, also in bronze. The figure
of Lincoln cost $4,000, and the entire
cost of the monument is $6,000, which
was subscribed for the most part by
Americans in Scotland and prominent
Scotchmen.
