"Talking of h'trhts. I w-.is once turned
out of bed tit mil o'clock in the morning
by one of my keeper:-, who came in with
the new? that the big kuttptroo had
jumped n six-foot fence into the next
stable, in which there wu? n large hip
popotamus. When I came down there QQober lOtll, 1893,
was wu- ijuei'reai hum ui :iuuei i-uui u.i.
The kanmroo stood up to his belly in ,
water whilst the hippopotamus, with
wide-open jaws, snapped at him right j
and left. However, the kangaroo
managed to 'get in a good right and j
left with his front legs, and scratched ,
the hippopotamus in the face tremen
dously. When the amphibian came to
close quarters, the kangaroo jumped up, '
gave him a tremendous blow with his
liind legs, and then managed to get on
to dry lnnd. I caught tire kangaroo
with a big net, and after all the lighting
there wasn't sn vurv much harm done."

"The Duke of Veracna a few years
ago," said a widely traveled American,
"was regarded ns rich. He had a com-,
fortable income and a large estate. It is '
not true that lie gambled his money
away at cards or other games of chance.
He lost his fortune at the Paris Exposi-
tion of ISS9. He opened tuiareiia near !
the exposition grounds, and made prep-,
aratious to give real Spanish bull fights
on an elaborate scale. At first it drew i
fairly well, but after the first week he
did not take in enough to pay half his
expenses. The result was when the ex
position closed the duke found himself
practically a bankrupt. Having lost his
fortune at one exposition I suppose it is !
only natural that he should endeavor to
recoup himself at another." X. Y. j

ef navigation on the Middie Columbia, and is a thriving, pros
perous city.
ITS TERRITORY.
It is the supply city for an extensive and rich agricultural
and grazing country, its trudf reaching as far south as Summer
Lake, a distance of over two hundred miles.
The Largest Wool Market.
The rich grazing country along the eastern sIojkj of the Ca
cades furnishes pasture for thousands of sheep, the wool front
which finds inurket here.
The Dalles is the largest original wool shipping point in
America, about 5,000,000 jiouiids being shipped last year.
ITS PRODUCTS.
The salmon fisheries are the finest on tho Columbia, yielding
this year a revouue of thousands of dollars, which will lie more
than doubled in the near future.
The products of tho lieiiutiful Klickitat valley find market
here, and the country south and east has this year filled tho
warehouses, aud all available storage places to overflowing with
their products.
ITS WEALTH.
It is the richest city of its size on the coast and its money is
scattered over and is being used to develop more tunning country
than is tributary to any olhur city in Eastern Oregon.
Its situation is unsurpassed. 3 U climate delightful. Its pos
