TIIK JDALI.ES OKEGON ".Falstaff" Is Pronounced the Com poser's Masterpiece. One of the "Grand Old Men" of Europe---In His Seventy-vXintli Year Now, But as Bright and Capable as a Young Giant. Our century has been kind to the veterans in the various walks of life, and poetry, science, politics, art and music each boast their famous devotees who have passed the septuagenarian 'inn Tn th. rwilm rtf miiRiV. thp rrrn.t. ; Italian maestro, Guiseppc Verdi, re cently, and in his seventy-ninth year, has piven to the world an opera whose brilliancy of conception, masterful force, perfect technique and richness bl popular sentiment rise above those of his. former creations. It takes a place among the grand productions of iime. Hadyn won renown for the pro duction of his "Creation" and the ' "SeaHtfJia" when a littae past 00, but since then intellectual vigor at this Tige nas ce&seu to sraci wonuer. "Wagner gave the world his best con ception when 08; at 78 Verdi brought out his first tragic opera, and at 79 pro duces a comic opera which has won universal plaudits. The striking character of Verdi's "Falstafl:"' is the originality of both plan and execution. The aged artist, long since a master of the old school of mvsical expression, and a consistent teacher of its methods, has broken iy from its lines, and with all the trenchant style, poetic fire and concen trated rigor of a man in the zenith of strength nnd activity leads the way into new paths, and raises higher the standard of musical interpretation. At -an age when it is presumed a man ceases to develop mentally or to be capable of the assimilation of new ideas and methods, Verdi has shown himself as alert intellectually and as quick to master new principles and popular sentiment1-; as the most bril liant,of the yo.ungei school, and he is the acknowledged head of the modern Italian school ' Ialstaff" is a comedy in the full significance of the term. There are oleven parts in the opera, that of Sir -i uhn Falstaff being played at its initial performance in Milan by . i I l GtTISEPPE VERDI. Victor Maurel. This character is the central figure of the story and is upon the stage most of the time. The change of style in Verdi's works first was no ticeable in "Don .Carlos," and contin ued in "Aida," tke "Manzoni Re quiem, " and "Otello," and finds its culmination in his "Falstaff." Much of tho'change in the latter production is creditable to Sig. Arrigo Boito, the noted librettist, in whom Verdi found a collaborator worthy his accomplish ments, and one whose assistance gave in-.p. ration to his efforts. Boito is thor oughly versed in stagecraft, and his libretto, an adaptation from Shakes peare, is rich in poetic sentiment, natio incident and lively action, "j he work throughout is concise and admirably balanced. In 'Otello," the trag, opora, the libretto is occasional- i; i . It was at once pro nounced an "unnatural drama, 'Land was the object of much ridicule and criticism from people who maintained it absurd that the actors should sing instead of speaking their lines. At that time it was a bold experiment to attempt to revive n modern Europe the Greek drama, but the "Greeks," as thcyp were called, held their way courageously, and in fifty years the opera was the favorite form of music in all European countries. Mr. CiUtop'g Unhappy Experience. "About as uncomfortable an experi ence as I ever had," said a retired bur glar, "I had in a small town in the interior of this si ate. I had gone into a house very late so as not to disturb the people, but just as I turned into one of the rooms the light was turned up sud denly, and an instant later I was pinned to the door by a knife through my coat sleeve. By this time my eyes had got accustomed to the light, and I could see a man sitting up in bed. He had a row of knives sticking in the headboard of the bed over his head and another knife in his hand. It seems that this man was a professional knife thrower, who made his home in this town and who always came there when he wasn't on the road. I had happened to find him at home, and here I was within five minutes after entering the house stand ing up against a door while he threw knives at me. It was a most unex pected and a most uncomfortable expe rience; and besides not getting any thing, I was actually out the cost of a good suit of clothes, for the ones I had on were never fit to wear afterwards."
