A PROPHECY FULFILLED.
The Oregon. an of November 9th con
tained the following prophetic utter
ance :
The country has decreed a change of
nal nnil inrlnstrial uolicv in the most
prosperous time it has ever known
This is largely the result of the immense
foreign vote in the great cities. Chicago
carries Illinois for Cleveland as the city
of New York carries New York state for
him. The labor vote, largely foreign,
ignorant of the extent of its prosperity,
has been misled by demagogues, and
has revolted against the best conditions
it has ever known. The populist craze,
Vmsp1 on the same errors that have
moved the labor vote, has contributed
not a little to this result. A majority of
the voters have for the time put exper
ience aside, rejected the policy under
which employment was abundant and
wages better than ever before in our
history, and have decided, though
without knowing it, to put their labor
on an equality with that of the cheap
labor countries of the Old World.
There will be a rude awakening. We
shall now have a free trade policy. We
ought to have it. The country hes
voted for it, and the present generation
should learn from experience what
it means. Naturally and inevitably
there will be timidity in making invest
ments, particularly in industrial enter
prises. Labor generally will find the de
mand for it checked, since new estab
lishments will not be founded, nor old
ones enlarged under existing uncertain
ties. The election of Cleveland will
carry with it a democratic majority both
in the senate and the house, and there
will be no obstacle to legislation on the
basis of the democratic platform. It
will be more than one year till the new
policy can be formulated into law and
set in operation ; nevertheless it is sure
that tlu result of tlie election of yesterday
will be the beginning of a period of indus
trial stagnation, resulting from the timid
ity of capital and uncertainty of business,
and that the consequences will recoil with
terrible force upon the labor classes,
through whose votes chiefly the result has
been brought about. They who know
these things have but to wait regretfully
for results to come about which they so
plainly foresee.
Again Mathias Koehland's liberty,
property and reputation are at stake,
and again the contending legal leaders
have marshaled their scattered forces,
and are once more drawn up in order of
battle on the forensic battle-field in
Judge Munly'a court room today.
The preliminary steps leading to the
real opening of the case occupied the at
tention of the bar and bench this morn
ing.
The same counsel are engaged on both
sides, and the indictment is similar to
the one on which Mr. Koshland was
acauitted. the main point being that
he issued a warehouse receipt for goods
not actually in the store. The differ
ence in the indictments is in the charac
ter of the goods, the latter being sheep
skins, instead of wool. Mr. Koshland
must explain the absence of 33,349
.sheepskins, which, it is alleged, were
not in the store at the time of issuing
the receipt.
As soon as the court convened after
the noon hour, Mr. Strahan arose and
moved that the indictment be set aside
on the ground that an interlineation
made in that document rendered it
void. The interlineation referred
to was the change of the word
"wool" to "sacks," and was explained
by the district attorney that it was
made in the presence of the grand jury
at the time the indictment was framed.
The point was discussed at consider
able length , but was overruled by the
court.
John Sontag Will Die.
Fresno, Cal., June 28. John Sontag
is very low. It is not thought he will
live through the day. He has lockjaw
and bloodpoisoning, and can neither
speak nor eat except very little. He is
unconscious most of the time, rousing
occasionally for a few rrftnutes.

If President Cleveland has accom
plished anything so far it has not yet
appeared on the surface. As an exam
pie of a do-nothing policy commend us
to this administration. The president
so far has succeeded merely in catching
a few trout, besides the fatiguing work
of turning some thousands of rascals out
and putting sundry thousands of scoun
drels in. His attitude on the tariff is all
conjecture ; he has stated nothing tan
gibie upon the silver question ; we are
all in the dark about what he proposes
to do about Hawaii, and his ambassa
dor is of the same stripe in that he is
afraid to even participate in a fourth of
July celebration tor tear he will show a
partiality to the United States. The
country will await with interest the
coming session of congress to see if he
will actually formulate plans upon any
subject which he is willing to have
made pub
While in China AdBlph Spreckels,
a son of Claus, saw a brother of Miss Ah
Fong, the Chinese lady who is engaged
to marry Commander Whitney, of the
United States steamer Alliance. The
brother said he and his father were ran
sacking China for suitable presents for
the bride and would send the com
mander a gorgeous mandarin's dress.
The agitating question of the hour is
will Mrs. Whitney cultivate the use of
the knife and fork, or will Mr. Whitney
