TUESDAY, JUNE 27, 1893 A striking case of youthful depravity has come to light in a 14-year-old girl ot Tacoma, who is pungently described by her mother as "a holy terror." In ap plying for an order committing the girl to the state reform school at Chehalis the mother told the court that her daughter had been sent to the House of the Good Shepherd at Seattle, to a con vent in Portland, to a boarding school in Chehalis and from all these places she had run away. Just before taking her seat after a serious talk from the judge, the girl astounded his honor by exclaim ing in a saucy manner: "I will be just as mean at the reform school as I can, and when I come out I will be ten times meaner." Reform in such a case is a very difficult matter and would have been better commenced before the girl was born. One of the treasures of the Edison Phonograph works at Orange is a cylin der that was impressed withj, the voice of the late John McCu Hough, the actor, who died in a madhouse. The impres sion was taken while he was in confine ment. Rambling passages from the plays in which he acted were recited in a voice.of wonderful power and pathos, but at the end of each passage the actor would stop and say, in a voice to chill the blood, "But now I'm mad ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha sh-h-h-h."- The end of the laugh was all but indescribable, for he drew in his breath with a sound that was partly a shriek and partly a gasp. If there is ever a voice heard from the tomb it is when this cylinder is put in the phonograph. It is rumored that a tall building is to be erected in Chicago in which there shall not be a stone, brick or piece of timber. It is to be constructed of an al loy of aluminum and copper ninety per cent of the former and ten per cent of the latter in the form of sheets over a wall of steel frame fireproofing. To a larger extent than is usual in such struc tures glass will be used, the windows being twenty-two feet wide. The struc ture composed entirely of plate glass and shining pieces of aluminum, will, it is asserted, be as striking in appearance as it will be novel. The cost is esti mated at seven hundred thousand dol lars. Our idea of pension reform is that it should commence with the "total disa bility" fellows who draw big salaries as public officials. There are many of these, some of them very rich, who .draw $72 to $100 a month of the people's money when their private incomes run up into the thousands. Our advice to Commissioner Lo?hren is : Be lenient to the $12 men, but scrutinize the big ones very closely. Review. Good "ad vice and a sound view of the needed reform. Two Chinese merchants at Klamath Falls were convicted of selling cigarettes to minors, and their fines, including costs, were over $70. It is just as unlaw ful for an American to sell cigarettes to a minor as for a Chinaman to do so. John can stand it better, for he don't care a whip abbut his society afiiiliations. The Oregon democracy has had many serious afflictions, but the worst has be fallen it with Dan Murphy at one end and Starr on the other. By this means, the republican party will get all the party secrets. Dispatch. Strength and Health. If you are not feeling strong and healthy, try Electric Bitters. Four New Boats Are Ordered by the Great Northern. Since the recent visit to ,Cleveland, Ohio, of President Hill, of the Great Northern, to the Globe Iron works, where the two big twin-crew passenger steamers are being built for this line, it has been decided to build four more steamers of the type now under con struction. The boats will cost $600,000 each, and will develop 6,000 horse power. They will be 410 feet long, or 30 feet longer than the boats now under way. Work on the first of them will probably not be started until one of the steamers to come out next season has a trial. It is proposed to have a boat leave Buffalo almost daily for the head of lake Super ior. It is said that there is some scheme for the control of transcontfnental pas senger traffic involved in the building of these boats. Buskin an Imbecile. The great lecturer and art critic of London, England, John'Ruskin, has be come an imbecile. He was born in 1819, his father being a London merchant. Physically weak, his mental powers hav been remarkably great. His earliest literary ellorts ap peared when he wasj only 15. He gradu- ated from Oxford in 1839 and four years later published the first volume of "Modern Painters," criticism of which brought him prominently before the public. He turned his attention to English architecture with a view to re forming it, in which he succeeded in a marked degree. He studied the best architecture of Europe, particularly Venice, and in 1851 published bis "Stones of Venice" illustrated by him self. Very popular among his works are "Ethics of the Dust," "A Crown of Wild Olive," and "Sesame and Lilies." President Diaz Will Not Run. City op Mexico, June 26. It is re ported on good authority that General Diaz will not be a candidate for re-election as president of Mexico, and that the government candidate will be General Reyes, the present governor of the state of Nuevo Leon. General Reyes is one of the - ablest officials in Mexico, and the state of Nuevo Leon has made more rapid advancement during his administration than any other state in Mexico, during the same period. He recently visited this city, and held a long conference with President Diaz. Will le Court-aiartialod. London, June 26.
