THE DALLES OKKfiON TO HOMii HiS MEMOES- Indiana Will Mark the Grave Governor Jennings. of Remarkable Character of the First Cliiot Executive ol trio Hoosicr State His Fight Against Slavery Ruined by Drink. The late session of the Indiana legis lature made an appropriation of 500 for the purpose of erecting- a monu ment at the grave of Jonathan Jen nings, the first governor of Indiana, and the citisens of Charlestown and Clark county have swelled the original amount appropriated by private sub scription until the monument fund has reached a respectable figure. Jonathan Jennings was one of the xemaikablc men of Indiana. He was ' born in New Jersey in 1T84, removed to Pennsylvania, and while young came down the Ohio river in a flatboat and settled at Jcffersonville, where he commenced the practice of law. Soon -.after he was made clerk of the territo rial legislature. He was elected the first territorial delegate to congress in 1809. Althoug-h a democrat young Jen nings was bitterly opposed to the ex tension of slavcrj-, and through his efforts more than those of any other man Indiana was admitted to the union k as a free state in 1810. At the first iconstitutionul convention held in Cory den in 110 Jonathan Jennings was elected president of the convention and after the adjournment he an nounced himself a candidate for gov ernor of the new state. Atthe August election of 1810 he defeated Thomas Posey, the then territorial governor, receiving 5,211 votes, his Jeunings opponent 3,934 votes. Two years later Gov. Jennings was appointed by President Monroe a com missioner to negotiate a treaty with the Indians, and after a bitter leg-al contest he held the office of governor as well as commissioner. He was re elected governor in 1830 and resigned the governorship in 1822, having been elected to congress. He served four terms in the lower house of congress and was defeated for a fifth term by Gen. John Carr. On retiring from con gress Mr Jennings removed to his farm near Charlestown. The ex-governor's governor and his second wife, even the governor's convivial habits caus ing no ripple on the sea of domestic bliss. The exovernor was taken ill in July, 1834. and on the 20th of that month he passed away, surrounded by his family and many devoted friends. The Dext day the remains were placed in a common farm wagon and taken to the little cemetery, situated on a high hill in the western part of Charlestown, and there interred. The grave will soon be marked by a monument of Vermont granite. The old house in which Gov. Jen nings and Miss Barbee were married and where the governor held his first reception still stands on acorner o fone of Charlestown's pretty streets after having stood the ravages of nearly a century. Here he entertained the leading poli ticians of Kentucky and Indiana in that hospitable manner for which he was noted. He owned a large still house and mill, situated on his estate, and kept a number of servants, al though lie was a very plain man, fre quently being taken by strangers for one of the ex-governor's servants. The convivial habits of that period soon claimed him a victim, and it is recorded tftat his political career was cut short by his uncontrollable desire for drink, his warmest friends voting against him in his last race for con-gross- He was twice married.
