-3cnry (Joebel Sjiid to I3o tlie Inventor of
the '.i .-! -:, . Lamp.
Henry Goebel, of New York, whose
:hances of being1 judicially decided to
the first inventor of the incandes
;ent electric lamp have been greatly
advanced by Judge Ilallett's recent de
cision in the case of the Edison com
pany versus the Columbia Incandes
cent company of St. Louis, is a fine
type of the well-preserved German,
HfcJTRY GOEBEL.
wno has reached a gTeen old age with
physical vigor and intellect but little
Impaired by accumulating years.
Mr. Goebel came to this country
about ISoO. and a few years later began
to make electric lamps in liiu shop in
Slonroe street out of old bottles, in
which lie used 'a filament cut from bam
boo fishpole and carbonized in a cook
stove. As the years passed his con
stant experimenting resulted in the
manufacture of some really excellent
lamps, according to the testimony of
many witnesses. Some of these lamps
were used to attract customers for a
big telescope which he took about the
lty on wheels. Others he used occa
sionally to work by, and another gave
the light for his daughter's sewing
machine. The lamp was not commer
cially introduced for the same reason
that electric motors were not general
ly introduced at that time, namely,
there was no cheap source of electric
ity. As appears by Judge Hallett's de
cision, he believes Goebel to have been
twenty ive years ahead of Edison in
this invention.

Destruction of American llirds.
Mr. John Worth, in the Nineteenth
Century, gives some striking facts
about the rapid . extermination of the
birds of North America. The advent
of the plow and the frame hut of the
settler is gradually driving the feath
ered tribe from its old haunts, and
what nests are spared by the plow are
only too often destroyed by prairie
fires. The heath hen used to be seen
in autumn in packs of from 100 to 200
birds each; now the number in a covy
rarely exceeds six or eight. The sharp
tailed grouse and the wild turkey will
soon follow the bison and the moose
into the animalia of the past. Prof.
Roney asserts in the Chicago Field
that in some of the vast breeding col
onies alone some 1,000,000,000 pigeons
were "sacrificed to Mammon" during
one nesting season, and, even allowing
for exaggeration, the extent of the
slaughter is beyond question. The
remedy is not easy to seek. Mr. Worth
suggests an act of congress to prevent
bird destruction throughout the United
States.

THE DALLES,
Wasco County, - Oregon,
The Gate City of the Inland Empire is situated at the head
ef navigation on the Middle Columbia, and is a thriving, pros
perous city.
ITS TERRITORY.
It is the supply eity for an extensive and rich agricultural
and grazing country, its trade reaching as far south as Summer
Liake, a distance of over two hundred miles.
f The Largest Wool Market.
' The rich grazing country along the eastern slope of the Cas-
cades furnishes pasture for thousands of sheep, the wool from
which finds market here.
The Dalles is the largest original wool shipping point in
America, about 5,000,000 pounds being shipped last year.
ITS PRODUCTS.
The salmon fisheries are the finest on the Columbia, yielding
this year a revenue of thousands of dollars, which will be more
than doubled in the near future.
The products of the beautiful Klickitat valley find market
here, and the country south and east has this year filled the
warehouses, and all available storage places to overflowing with
their products.
ITS WEALTH.
It is the richest city of its size- on the coast and its money is
scattered over and is being used to develop more farming country
than is tributary to any other city in Eastern Oregon.
Its situation is unsurpassed. Its climate delightful. Its pos
sibilities incalculable. Its resources unlimited. And on these
jorner stones she stands.
