Brain, judgment, energy, enterprise and perseverance all prime reqdisites for the best administration, are personated in the various individuals therein named. For mayor, the name ot E. EINEHABT. DOUGLASS S. DUFUR, Candidate for recorder, is a young man not quite 24 years of age against whom nothing can be claimed and for whom much can be urged. He comes from a family whose members have been in the habit of making their mark in the world, and we doubt not Douglas will maintain the family reputation. The greater part of his education was gained in Portland, afterward taking a course in the Wasco Independent Academy, finishing with a thorough course in the Portland Busi ness College. He emerged from this an expert accountant, type-writer and pen man, in addition to the thorough -going business principles with which he be came inculcated. In 1890 he took charge of the SI usher farm, on the decease of Thos. Slusher, and managed it for two years to the entire satisfaction of the heirs. For nearly two years past he has been in the law office of Dufur & Men efee, reading law at the same time, and his services are considered invaluable. He will bring to the position of recorder a knowledge which he has spent his life in acquiring and which will find ready demand for the arduous and varied duties of the city's clerk. GEO. D. REED. Mr. Reed, who runs independents, we support because of the superior qualities possessed by him for this really respon sible position. He is a young man of broad views, of sturdy physical develop ment, and has grown up with us from childhood. He is so well known as to make comment superfluous ; his acquain tances will say for him that he is indus trious; of good habits, attends to his own business, is reliable and trustworthy, and if elected, will make as good a marshal as The Dalles ever had, and this is saying a good deal when the services of Mr. Beers, Mr. Thurston and Ralph Gibons are remembered. A kindly eye beams from his six feet of stature, which shows the broad intellect back of it, the disposition to weigh, judge and analyze facts, and the determination to do the right thing after that thing has been once determined. I. I. BURGETT. Mr. JJurgett is one of onr best citizens and in the long term of years he has re- sided in The Dalles, has yet to hear the first imputation against his private or public life. Eminently respectable, trustworthy, loyal and personally deserv ing, the office of treasurer could fall to no person more appropriate than Mr. I. I. Burgett. w. H. BUTTS Is a public-spirited man, known to all classes of our citizens as a man of jovial temperament. He is brainy and has an element of cautiousness that prevents reckless experimenting with the public money. The city council, as we hope to see it elected Monday, will include two physi cians Dr. Rinehart mayor, and Dr. Eshelman councilman. Both are avow edly for war on filth, disease and pesti lence. Carelessness on the part of the citizens and indifference on the part of officers in the past are undoubtedly re sponsible for much sickness and death. The cases of diphtheria in the old garri son are believed to be due to the filthy surroundings, which might have been obviated by the proper attention. By all means let us have one administra tion which will look out for sanitation. Ben Butler won his greatest laurels be cause of vigilance at New Orleans in his sanitary measures. " I see," quoth he, " ns all may see. Tour kidneys arc affected." These wise men argued loud and long. Yet the patient owes recovery ( Not to those doctors, but to Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery I. There are some patent medicines that are more marvelous than a dozen doctors' pre scriptions, but they're not those that profess to cure everything. Everybody, now and then, feels "run down,"" played out" They've tho will, but no power to generate vitality. They're not sick enough to call a doctor, but jjust too sick to be well That's where the right kind of a patent medicine comes in, and does for a dollar what the doctor wouldn't do for less than five or ten.
