Vox populi, vox Dei. Democrats, re publicans, mugwumps, populists, men of all trades and professions a vast num ber of them, comprising a great share of the actual voting population of The Dalles, were in attendance at the court house last night to determine who a majority of them favored for their city officials for the ensuing year. No studied speeches were made, and there was an absence of anything approaching trick ery, coercion or undue persuasion. Dr. W. E. Rinehart was chosen by acclamation to run for mayor. Mr. Rinehart will serve our city wisely and well. He announced last night that if elected he would make the health of citizens the first great desideratum This work has been undertaken by the present council, with the full approval of a majority of citizens. The maddening cry of reform has not as yet attacked the health proposition. The election of Dr. Rinehart will give a stimulus to this one great question that alone will make his choice a wise one. With the death rate lessened and sickness reduced to a minimum, a blessing is conferred that is inestimable, and taxes will be easier to pay when the money does not have to go for doctor bills. The selection of Douglas Dufur for recorder could not have been improved, and there were good men contending against him in the convention. Mr. Dufur is a young man of more than ordinary intelligence, of exemplary habits, and ambitious. He possesses great native ability, to which is added a special training for his duties which should be required of every incumbent. Like his predecessor, Mr. Menefee, he will save the city many dollars for lawyers' fees. Possessing all these merits, it will not be surprising if Mr. Dufur leads his ticket. Mr. I. I. Burget for treasurer will poll a large vote, as it is conceded that he is fully competent to attend to the duties that are required, and is personally agreeable. Dan Maloney has filled the office of marshal fairly well, having proved him self to be an industrious officer, though lacking in judgement on one or two no table occasions, but his methods in pol itics the last few days is at least ques tionable. Having secured the nomina tion on the regular democratic ticket it is not strictly the part of wisdom to ac cept like honors at the hands of the cit izens convention. He should repudiate the latter, since it is now too late to re pudiate the the former. Geo. Herbert who is his partner in misfortune, did the honorable thing in refusing to be a nominee last night, was wise as well. The fast trains from New York to Chicago have been pulled off because they wouldn't pay expenses. A general complaint also comes from the steamer lines that travel to Chicago is so light that the are losing money when they expected to do a booming business. The people of the United States are not patronizing Chicago like they did Phila delphia in 1876. They like to be hum bugged, but they don't like to be robbed and then laughed at for their indiscre tion in going to Chicago. There must be a great change made in the methods of that city, and that soon, if they ever hope to recover their money. Chicago has overreached herself this time, and has given us a reputation among neigh boring nations of being a people given to extortion. Are you insured? We quote a paragraph from his explanation, as follows: "For the past fourteen years I have been engaged in ministerial and evang elistic work, preaching and lecturing, em ploying such methods as my judgment dictated, and have always been supplied with the literature I have described; my Work has been successful ; in a large de gree and thousands have been converted under my preaching. During the past year I have assisted in organizing and building two churches, and during my ministry I have organized and built about seventy-five and the number of conversions runs well up into the thous ands. We are warned not to preach any other gospel and the announcement has gone forth, 'by their fruits ye shall know them.' In conclusion, Christ is my guide and God is my judge. Who accuses me of preaching anti-Christ? Lastly, I ask the public to take note that it was the clergy who precipitated these reports of plagiarism, not the public, and, besides, my sermons were more than one-half original as all must admit.
