WEDNESDAY, - - JUNE 14, 1893 A FINANCIAL FAILURE. It ia now plainly apparent that the world's fair is not proving the financial success which its promoters had hoped to find it. The Chicago exposition was built up on a grand scale, probably a grander one than the world will see for some decades, if ever again, in this country. The architecture is on a stu pendous scale of magnificence, and it can almost be said that no expense has been spared to create an exposition that excites the just wonder and admiration of all who have visited the fair. All this effort, however, took money. It is estimated that between $20,000,000 and $30,000,000 were needed to produce the exposition of 1893, and it is known that but a small part of the sum was contributed by the government. A far larger portion was obtained by sub scriptions from those who held at one time the hope that the investment would yield a fair return. How baseless that hope has proven as yet may be learned from the reports of the auditors. In spite of the stories of large attend ance on various days, it appears that the receipts of the exposition do little more than suffice to meet the running expenses. As yet there seems to be no immediate prospect of making any profit which will serve to reimburse those who subscribed so largely to the exposition fund as an investment, and it is to be supposed that the investors are already beginning to despair of .getting any con siderable portion of their original sub scription back. Apparently the managers of the fair already realize that many people who might otherwise have attended have been kept from the exposition by causes which can be remedied. The lack of iree seats and cheap restaurants was a potent factor in keeping people away, and it now appears that the old order of things in that respect is being changed foi the better. Railroad charges are still excessive and paevail to keep a very large proportion of people throughout the United States away from the expo sition. With a grant of reasonaable railroad rates the finances of the fair may begin to show a better aspect, and the friends of the exposition should use every effort to secure a reduction of such rates. ' A ranting aggregation of high-sounding words and phrases, false and mis leading in every line, have been pro mulgated as the "platform" of the city democrats. Its pessimistic construction, by a little ring styling themselves the city democrats, will be repudiated by the real followers of that party here. The city finances are not in such a state that the "encumbrance of property verges on confiscation by taxation," as there lugubriously stated. Warrants are worth 100 cents on the dollar ; there are no bonds out which have to be paid, and no loan contemplated. Talk about confiscation is rot. "You say that the victors should have the speils?" said Grover to an office- seeker from the state of Washingon "Why, yes, Mr. President," was the an swer; -'if the victors don't own them, who does?" "Very well," said the president; "in what wav were the Washington democrats victors last No vember? You sent me no electoral votes, and I note that the state officials and the legislature out there are repub lican. Applying your maxim, I find' that I am the only victor in the case, and therefore the spoils belong to me. I shall dispense them to suit myself. Good day, sir. Don't come again." The best mayor we ever had is the present incumbent, Hon. Robt. Mays, and we are much pleased to authorita tively state that he will accept the nom ination if tendered him tonight. Mr. Mays services are invaluable to our city and we hope the sentiment will be rati fied by an overwhelming majority. The sensation ot yesterday, says an eastern paper, was the stand taken by Rev. J. H. Ecob, D. D., pastor of the Second Presbyterian church in this city. It was known that he sympa thized with Dr. Briggs in bis recent treatment by the general assembly, but it was not not thought he would go so far as to withdraw from the Presbyter ian church. He took that step, and his church will probably be with him and act independently hereafter, leaving open the question of connection with some other denomination. In Dr. Ecob's opinion now is the time for liberal Christians of all churches to come together. His sermon outlined the steps that led up to the final action of the assembly. "There is no hope," he said, "of do ing anything by staying inside of the Presbyterian church after that act. The minority was not treated even de cently and the majority is too large to be overcome within the ranks. Large as it was, it did not represent the great majority of the Presbyterians outside who have no use for a confession of faith made over 200 years ago." Furnished rooms to rent.
