THE WORLD'S FAIR TIME-BALL.
How It Will 13.- Handled and Con trolled
In Its Work.
The five-foot time-ball to be dropped
at the world's, fair will be made of can
vas on steel frame. It will be' wound
up eaeh day to the height from which
it is to fall, and it will be set and elec
trically connected in such a manner
that the breaking- of the circuit at
twelve noon will release it.
The cable by which it will be con
trolled has already been laid, conhect
, 'iBjr the new observatory with the en
tire Western Tjnion telegraph system,
the touch of a button at the Washing
ton end of it instantaneously trans
mitting notice of the hour over three
hundred and fifty thousand miles of
wire.
' When that button speaks the whole
country will listen, and the hands of
seventy thousand electric clocks all
over the country will point to the cor
rect minute and second. There are
i seven thousand such clocks in New
Xork city alone. All railways, fac
tories and industries of every kind pay
attention to the signal. Three min
utes before noon each day all Western
Union lines are cleared of business,
every operator takes his finger from
the key, circuits are opened, and at the
instant when the sun passes over the
seventy-fifth meridian the spark of in
telligence is flashed to all parts of the
country. It requires less than one
fifth of a second to reach San Fran
cisco. The twelve o'clock signal sent from
Washington indicated 11 a. m. for Chi
cago, 10 a. m- for Omaha and 9 a. m.
for the Pacific coast, the United States
being divided into four perpendicular
strips, and each strip setting its clocks
by the time of the meridian which
bisects it from north to south. "Thus
each strip is only one hour later than
me nexi strip to tne cast.
"Golden Medical Discovery" cures
those diseases which comes frm blood
impurities scrofula and skin diseases'
sores and swellings.
But does it? It's put up by the thous
ands of gallons, and sold to hundreds of
thousands. Can it cure as well as
though it had been compounded just for
you?
Its makers say that thousands of peo
ple who have had tetter and salt-rheum,
eczema and erysipelas, carbuncles and
sore eyes, thick neck and enlarged
glands, are well today because they used
it.
. Suppose that this is so. Suppose that
a quick-witted man was far-seeing
enough to know that to cleanse the
blood was to cleanse the life. Suppose
that by many experiments, and after
many failures, he discovered this golden
icey to health and that his faith in it for
you is so strong that you can go to your
druggist, buy a bottle, and if it doesn't
help you, you can get your money re
turned cheerfully. Will you try it?
The remedy to have faith in, is the
remedy the makers themselves have
faith in.

The Gate City of the Inland Empire is situated at the head
of navigation on the Middle Columbia, and is a thriving, pros
perous city.
ITS TERRITORY.
It is the supply city for an extensive and rich agricultural
and grazing country, its trade reaching as far south as Summer
Lake, a distance of over two hundred miles.
. , The largest Wool Market.
The rich grazing country along the eastern slope of the Cas
cades furnishes pasture for thousands of sheep, the wool from
which finds market here.
The Dalles is the largest original wool shipping point in
America, about 5,000,000 pounds being shipped last year.
ITS PRODUCTS.
The salmon fisheries are the finest on the Columbia, yielding
this year a revenue of thousands of -dollars, which will be more
than doubled in the near future.
The products of the beautiful Klickitat valley find market
here, and the country south and east has this year filled the
warehouses, and all available storage places to overflowing with
their products.
ITS WEALTH.
It is the richest city of its size on the coast and its money -is
scattered over and is being used to develop more farming country
