THE GRANGE.
The twentieth session of the State
Grange, held at The Dalles, is numbered
with the events of the past, and the
members, in framing the customary
resolutions, were kind enough to thank
the people of The Dalles, for considerate
treatment. Incidentally, the Chronicle
was especially thanked for the attention
given them in its columns. The Grange
is a young institution, but is making a
Bteady rather than a phenomenal
growth, and is already a power in the
kind with promise of attaining all legiti
mate objects for which they are contend
ing through education of its members.
As was said last evening at the court
house by a speaker, they are not a par
tisan organization, restricting no mem
ber in their right of suffrage. Believing
nevertheless that they can best attain
their aimsthrougg the ballot, they exer
cise a certain moral suasion that, as far
as practical results are concerned, is
equivalent to u pledge. The hope of se
curing alleviative legislation by any
given class has almost always proved
elusive of attainment, but the farmers,
if any, can accomplish this end.
Among the labor classes their Joshuas
prove recreant to their trust, if elected,
and the political leaders of any class, it
has almost invariably been shown, when
once inducted into politics, are readily
con ti united with the desire for pelf
and influence. The agriculturists of the
country, if any, ought to be able to
choose men from among them who will
not betray their interests and since Mr.
Hayes, the lecturer of the State Grange,
has said that the nation cannot survive
the present conditions of centralization
of capital twenty years, many of us will
live, if his statement is true, to see how
the change is to be accomplished.
The Hood River Glacier says : Oregon
has outgrown its constitution, and needs
a new one. It was made to suit the
wants of 20,000 people, and is not large
enough for 400,000. The muddle over
the Soldiers' ' Home emphasizes this.
That the constitution says that all state
buildings should be located at the state
capitol, is beyond question ; and that
the locating of any state building away
from the state capitol is unconstitutional
ia an undeniable sequence. The consti
tution has been trampled upon and ig
nored so often that it has lost respect
and force. The people have acquiesced
in this treatment of it. There is scarcely
a county in the state but that has had a
debt in direct violation of the constitu
tion, and we believe Marion county is in
that condition. Salem cares little for
the Soldiers' Home being located eke
where, and the suit was brought not to
prevent the location of the Soldiers'
Home, but to prevent the locating of
the branch insane asylum in Eastern
Oregon. It will not work. The mat
ter may be delayed, but Salem has
started a conflagration that is now be
yond her control and the matter is going
to be settled, and settled right, even
though it requires a change of both con
stitution and capitol to do it.
It is said Dr. Keely has amassed a
fortune of $20,000,000 from his liquor
cure. This shows how earnest is the de
sire of drnnkards and their friends to
rid themselves of the liquor habit, and
is a tacit admission of its great evil.
The Irish spend Sll per capita, the
Scotch $15.14 per capita and the Eng
lish $19.16 per capita for liquors an
nually. These statistics are given by
Rev. Dr. Dawson Burns, of London,
who is a standard authority on temper-

Mb. Allison, the newly-appointed
commissioner of agriculture for Ten

Kept tip
for years the offer that's made hy
the proprietors of Dr. Sage's Ca
tarrh Remedy. It's addressed to
you, if you have Catarrh. It's a
reward of $600, if they can't cure
you, no matter how had your case,
or of. how long standing an offer
that's made in good faith hy re
sponsible men.
Think what it means ! Absolute
confidence in their Remedy, or they
couldn't afford to take the risk. A
long record of perfect and perma
nent cures of the worst cases or
they couldn't have faith in it. It
means no more catarrh or $500.
If you fail to be cured, you won't
fail to be paid.
But perhaps you won't believe it.
Then there's another reason for try
ing it. Show that you can't be
cured, and you'll get $500. It's a
plain business offer. The makers
of Dr. Sage's Catarrh Remedy will
pay you that amount if they can't
cure you. They- know that they
can you think that they can't. If
they're wrong, you get the cash. If
you're wrong, you're rid of catarrh.
