MAY 26, 1893
One of the insane ideas of the age is
the Columbian liberty bell, cast from
valued relics of all kinds. One pf these
is a gold clasp belonging to General
Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis, and
Mrs. Elie, of Cincinnati, sends a silver
spoon belonging to her mother, who was
a cousin of General Lee. Heirlooms
and valuable relics of all kinds are to be
used for this work, the value of which
will be practically destroyed after it is
remelted. Their individuality is lost
forever, the thousand chances of exhibit
ing them to friends and the .pride of
possession all gone. Besides there is
omnipresent the tormenting fear that
perhaps they didn't get into the bell
after all. The whole scheme is as rank
a proposition as the offerings of the
heathen to their idols, the poor deluded
mortals believing that they arejnecessary
for the sustenance of their gods, but
which are appropriated by the high
priests through concealed doors.
J. C. Egbert, in conversation with a
Chronicle reporter this morning, stated
that the increase of fruit acreage this
year throughout Wasco county is really
prodigious, and will not be realized un
till the assessment rolls show in black
and white the increase of improved
acre?. He says there are hundreds of
small farmers, to say nothing of whole
sale planters, who have planted young
trees this spring and last fall, and who
are planning to set out a greater number
than ever the coming fall. One hundred
thousand more prune trees are growing
this year than last. The grape planting
has increased as well, and two years
hence there will have been at least 500,
000 more plants from present orders.
The volume of fruit for the coming year
bids fair to be something tremendous.
Dr. Jacob L. Wortman, recently ap
pointed to the chair of Paleontology in
Princeton college, New Jersey, is an Ore
gonian and a former pupil of Prof.
Condon, of the University ot Oregon,
from which he graduated in 1878. He
afterward graduated from the Pennsly
vania college of surgery and anatomy,
and soon after was appointed anatomist
in the Army Medical Museum at Wash
iugton. He has written some fine
works, and his "Comparative Anatomy
of the Teeth" is a standard authority
among men of science. His success
shows what Oregon push and energv
can do.
A Trenton, (New Jersey) company will
engage in the business of raieing sunken
vessels by a novel method. Larjre rub
ber bags will be placed in the hold of
the sunken vessels by divers. The bags
will be connected by a hose with air
pumps on floats at the surface and air
pumped into them. As the bags expand
it is expected they will expel nearly all
the water from the hold and give the sun
ken vessel sufficient buoyancy to cause
it to rise to the surface. The company's
first experiment will be made on the
Oregon, sunk off Fire island.
Colorado Chinamen were the only
ones who were cute enough to profit by
the Geary registration law. They not
only registered once, but several times,
ad then sold the duplicates to the Six
Companies, to place in the hands of new
imports, all of which shows that the
canning of the Six Companies is inferior
to the aggregated intelligence of the
Coolies. If all the Chinamen had done
this the population could have been
doubled. They lost the chance of a life
time to get all their relatives out here.
Lawyer Bigger in the Soldiers' Home
case scored Governor Pennoyer hard for
helping set aside the provisions of the
constitution requiring all public insti
tutions to be located at the seat of gov
ernment, yet continually demanding
the impeachment of President Cleve
land for failure to enforce only a statute.

Militia Encampment.
The state military board has decided
to appropriate $300 each for 13 infantry
companies, the battery and the troops to
go into encampment. The troop and
company D, of the Second regiment,
stationed at Ashland, will camp together
at Fort Klamath, provided the com
pany is willing to accept the $300 in full
of all per diem and ration allowance and
pay its own transportation. The bat
tery and nine companies of the First
regiment and three of the second will
camp together near Portland, at a point
yet to be selected, and $200 has been al
lowed to pay the expenses of the com
panies up the valley. The three Second
regiment companies will probably be
selected from the military at Hubbard,
Albany, Eugene and Salem, by inspec
tion, the three best being chosen. All
depends upon the waiving of pay and
allowances, and the acceptance of the
$300 in full for each company. The
Third regiment is so scattered that no
effort will be made to bring together its
companies this year. Salem Journal.

"Beauty without grace
is a hook without a bait." That's what
the French think. Whether it be true
or not, there are many American women
who do not even possess the hook beau
ty and attractiveness are denied them.
Why ? Because they're languid, cross
and irritable. They know not what
it is to be without pain or discomfort
half the time.
That's it; suffer in silence misun
