JSTATE ORANGE.
The city of The Dalles welcomes to
day the several members of the State
Grange, whojwill visit as and hold?their
annual session. Since production is the
basis of all wealth, there is much honor
due these representatives of the tillers
of the soil. The farmer, while enjoying
the most independent life, works more
hoars than do those of any other avoca
tion. His duties are many and varied,
and he mast be endowed with good
judgment through the growing season
and business capacity during harvest
time to be successful. The State
Grange, thoagh a secret organization, is
primarily a farmers' institution, and
much benefit will result from their
councils.
The Pacific coast is yet in its infancy
Scarcely fifty years have elapsed since
the first efforts of civilization have
been turned to produce from our soil
the varied products required for con
sumption. The valley of the Nile has
ungrudgingly yielded its increase for
thousands of years, but the Pacific
coast has only within a short period of
time grown other than the manzanita
and the laurel, the wild rose and the
sunflower. ' A new field of labor has
opened up in the Occident that has not
yet refused to duplicate the product of
any latitude, and which is already looked
to for supplies in a large part of our own
country, as well as foreign nations.
Now the Oregonian has joined in the
clamor against Salem, because some
second-class fool newspaper men of this
city have opposed the location of the
proposed State Soldiers' Home at Rose
burg, and a branch asylum in Eastern
Oregon and because a citizen of Salem
has enjoined the trustees of the former
institution. It would be quite as rea
sonable to condemn the whole city of
Portland, as a city, because, forsooth
some fellow residing there made a fool
or an ass of himself. The people of
Salem generally do not oppose the loca
tion of the Soldiers' Home at Roseburg
since it is provided for at all. And
they are not opposed to the location of
the branch asylum in Eastern Oregon.
.They understand that it would not take
long for the people to change by vote
the constitutional provision for the loca
tions of all the state institution here. As
a rule, therefore, our people favor let
ting these matters alone. Statesman.
Fortune is said to be fickle, but when
the top rung of the ladder is gained in
pugilism, at least, she is prodigal. It
might have taken Corbett a hundred
years, by the customary toilsome road,
to attain that proficiency as an actor
which would give him a crowded house,
as in San Francisco last evening when
every seat was engaged early in the
afternoon. Yet his fame as a pugilist
at once elevated him to histrionic
honors. By the same queer perversity
be may be said to be also a painter,
though cardinal is his principal color in
stock . Sullivan, in the height of his
glory, was an editor for a while, which
leads to the conclusion that to be chief
of the pugilistic arena is to be an all
round artist and intellectual giant.
A plan to divide Oregon, Washington
and Idaho and form three new states
upon radically changed lines is com
mended in some quarters. Briefly
stated, the plan proposes that the por
tions of Oregon and Washington west
of the Cascade mountains should be
combined into a state called Oregon ;
that the portion of Washington east of
these mountains, together with North
Idaho, should form another state, to
be called Washington ; finally, that
South Idaho and Eastern Oregon
should be joined under the name of
Idaho.
The Pendleton Tribune is reaching out
for popular favor on a large scale. It
proposes to take the regular night ser
vice of telegraphic dispatches and issue
a morning paper. The enterprise of the
Tribune is commendable, and it lacked
only the press service before to make it
the favorite of the Pendleton community.
The paper has a broad-minded editor, to
whom petty small talk is distasteful, and
who is capable of handling all public
questions in a masterly manner, while
for local news it has long been the ac
knowledged chief.

5 HE NEW TOWN has been platted on the old camp ground, at the Forks and
Falls of Hood river, with large sightly lots, broad streets and allevs, good soil,
pure cold water and shade in profusion, perfect drainage, deligtitful mountain
climate, the central attraction as a mountain summer resort and for all Oregon,
being the nearest town to Mt. Hood. It is also unparalled as a manufacturing
center, being the natural center for 150 square miles of the best cedar and fir
timber, possessing millions of horse power in its dashing streams and water
falls, easily harnessed. Where cheap motive power exists, there the manu
factories will center, surrounded by soil and climate that cannot be excelled
anywhere for fruit and agriculture, and with transportation already assured
you will find this the place to make a perfect home or a paying investment
