The true story of the interview be tween Secretary Carlisle and the New York bankers has leaked out. And it shows up handsomely for the credit and resolution of the administration. In stead of the bankers having all the Bay as the dispatches ran, they had very lit tle to do but to sit like a pack of naughty school boys and take their medicine. The secretary opened and closed the whole conversation. He went over the entire gold business since the election ot Cleveland and told them how and why the gold tide had ebbed so rapidly. He warned them that he understood the whole matter and all their schemes and did not intend to allow their avarice to force him to issue bonds. That the Sherman law was at the root of the evil and would be wiped from the statute as soon as congress met. That to issue bonds was to admit that the adminis tration was too weak to contend with them and that the New York banks were not yet masters of the treasury. He said that there was lots of gold in the country and the people would rally to the national support when necessary. The Boston, Chicago and Virginia al ready led the advance and he scornfully advised them to follow their example. That the government was in daily re ceipt of offers of gold and the bonds would never be issued ; because it would be a blot upon his administration, send gold up and might produce a serious crisis. This strong, manly, independ ent, patriotic stand completely upset the plans of these plutocrats and they came to their knees without further special pleadings. It makes the Ameri can spirit proud to know that no eet of rich men are able by any scheme, how ever deeply laid, to intimidate or affect the government. Never again will the banks trv such a royal bluff as that. Exchange. Mackay's two physicians charged $7,500 and $5,000 for extracting Rippey's bullet, the former making 45 visits, and the latter 26. Mackay next went to Chicago. At this giddy rate of speed he will go broke before the year is out Mackay is surely getting reckless, and we will next hear of subscriptions being taken for him. Ohio and Pennsylvania have been visited by the heaviest rains known for years. At Cleveland 3 inches have fallen and the storm continues without abatement. In Pennsylvania the loss of property is large, besides railway traffic is suspended to a large degree Disastrous floods are expected in both states. -Physician, heal thyself !" will come to mind in connection with the failure of Dr. Warner, the safe cure man. The general supposition was that he was heeled, but he foolishly spent his money in speculations, instead of keeping up his advertising. Governor Pennoyer has easily dis tanced the field as the winning populist presidential possibility in 1896 by his spirited resentment of Gresham's insult to Oregon. It will now be Pennoyer or Llewellyn of Kansas. RAILROADS IN AFRICA. Towns 111 Mrtslionnluird No Longer ot mushroom Growth. A recent issue of the Engineering Magazine has an interesting survey of "Railroad Development in Africa," from the pen of Cyrus D. Adams. Only five years ago, he says, a magnificent harbor was discovered at the mouth of Pungwee river, about one hundred and fifteen miles below the Zambesi delta. It is about two miles wide and six miles long, and on its northern shore has risen the town of Beira, where five hundred Europeans, half of them Brit ish, are now living. Beira is one of Africa's latest marvels. aH uaH pub 'JBai sim 1 Pna 8lW .Aq p99ImoD oq o si ami asanii'ioj 3tll puBrBuoqsujc ui uamujaAoS jo 1ss au 'iCinqsixBg JO o ossawiswBjv; V Jaiuoaj iasarLgnaoj aq rnojj uotsuoi -xa ub prmq pun 'puoj oq jo )udm -eSuuTjui aq u; soijaiiAud UTBjao aABq 0, si A'uTjduioo uoujv qnog qsiiug qT juaruaSuBxiT! kq 'inq 'ijjoa aq?. 1. no iiu'AjJTjD si 'noyjejodjoa asortSruaoj 'ioTidmoa anbiqurczoK "SJiqicp uoirrnn aAti noqu v paircuiiisa st puoj aqa jo isoa aqi pun 'Taaj pajpunq aaaq) noqu jo uuds suq oSpuq Tsa3uo si 'saxim pajpanq OA14 ubu ssaj si qi3uai xio sTi U3AU isng aq. anori sajx assajxjssBjAi 0 Sum. aq jrsq .C.rcarj joj ainoa aqx paajdmoa uaaq pnq puojirej 4wn aq jo sdiitii aAjj-AViqi o3ti qinotn y -spxag pioil Avau arnnadc st asudiana qspua ajaqa. naiTTcl puu niunnom jo uol3oj aqi 'pn-si -ouoqs'BJt J vod aqi, aq 0 si 'caiaa aoj !Hoaoi jo no &bm. &xt v pun si.aajs oq jo ano qJrJnoaqi pojjnd TJJiaa nt aaqiaSoj jnd uaaq pnq v&n aAiiomooox C68I '8S iaqmaAox "saidhooo i pnus jo Ajoiuomcad aaaauq oq uaas joao pnq o2ti sjTjaA" xis ucm aiq.u on xquqoaj ish extension will be pushed forward. This line will give to Mashonaland which, in agricultural and mineral re sources and the salubrity of its climate, is one of the most favored parts of Africa its shortest outlet to the sea. Beira is destined to be a port of large importance, and lots for business pur poses are n"w selling for fifteen hun dred to twenty-five hundred dollars apiece in a place which not many months ago was a barren waste. Five years ago only two or three white men had ever visited Mashonaland; its pres ent population includes three thousand white settlers. IN SPORTING CIRCLES.
