HAS GONE TO HAWAII.
Mr. Blount, Chairman of tbe Commis
sion, to Visit the Islands.
James H. Blount, whom President
Cleveland has named to be chairman of
the Hawaiian commission, was, until
March 4, the democratic father of the
house of representatives. Upon that
date he retired after twenty years' serv
ice as a member. He was at the time
chairman of the committee on foreign
affairs, where he gained a knowledge of
the international relations of the United
States that especially fits him for the
position to which he has been chosen.
Mr. Blount is a native of Macon, Ga.,
where he was born September 12, 18S7.
He made his first appearance in public
life in 1872, when he was elected to con
gress from the Sixth district of Georgia.
Since that time he has been continuous
ly reelected. At the time of his last
election he had a hard fight against the
farmers' alliance, but came out success
fully, although six of his colleagues
went down before the new element.
Mr. Blount retired from the house be
cause he declined to take a renomina
tion last fall. At that time he intended
to return to the practice of law in Ma
con, Ga. When the cabinet was in
process of formation his name was
more .han once spoken of as possible
postnaster general.
February 4 Mr. Blount, in view of his
approaching retirement, received an un
precedented tribute from the members.
The proceedings of the house were in
terrupted to allow Judge Holman to
eulogize his services. The judge was
followed by Mr. Bland, of Missouri, Mr.
Hitt, Mr. O'Neill, Mr. Springer and Mr.
McCreary, all of whom spoke of his
work in high terms.

Sherman County Oregon, Bids will be r.ceived
until 12 o'clock II. May 15th 1893, by 8. 8. Hayes
Clerk of said court, at Moro Oregon, for the con
tract of rebuilding the vault of .said county.
Said vault to be built upon the site of the present
one, in Moro In said county, and to be 12 feet
long. 9 feet wide, and 7 feet high inside measure
ments, with solid stone walls 3 feet thick, and a
good and substantial floor, and to be arched over
head with brick In such a manner as to be abso
lutely Are proof
The Contractor shall use the materials upon
the ground as far as possible to construct theie
with a good substantial building, to wit : the
building stone, brick, rods, roof etc,, and shall
furnish any and all additional materials neces
sary to build, cover and complete in a good and
substantial and workmanlike manner, and de
liver same to said court on or before the 5th doy
of July 1893.
Said contractor shall guarantee said vault to
stand perfectly, for two' years, except against
earthquakes, cyclones, the public enemy, dyna
mite bombs, or any similar disaster for which he
