The duchess of Teck, after the prin
cess of Wales, is the most popular mem
ber of the royal family, and, what is
more, she has always been popular
through a period extending over fifty
five years.

every heart by storm, says the Chicago
Record. She was known as the "Peo
ple's Polly," and wherever her pretty
rosy face was seen there was a chorus
of -atVRiiration and praise. Years went

many seasons. The queen was ab
sorbed in the duties of state antl her

There was once a proposition made

gagement to the duke of Teck was an
nounced, and shortly after they were
nuarried with fitting pomp, in the little

tifected family life, both working hard

absolutely indefatigable. She and her
daughter, Princess "May," ever since
lhe death of the duke of Clarence, spend
five days out of seven each week in per
forming some kind of public duty, and
often at great personal inconvenience to
themselves.
During the last few years the Tecks
have inhabited the white lodge, a pretty,
old fashioned looking house in Richmond
park, said to have been the theater of
the scene where Jennie Deans "pleaded
the desperate cause of her sister Effie
sbefore Queen Caroline;" again, it was
in the room which is now the duchess'
Taondoir in the white lodge, that Lord
Nelson drew out roughly his plan of
breaking the enemy's line when dining

in waiting, her most faithful compan
ion and secretary is her own daughter,
Princess May. She takes down a great
many of her mother's letters from dic
tation, transcribing them afterward on
the little writing table which stands in
a corner of the duchess' sitting-room.
Among the charities in which the two
ladies take the keenest interest are the
Society for the Relief of Distressed Irish
Ladies, the Needlework Guild, the Roy
al Cambridge As3'lum for Soldiers' Wid
ows and the Addlestone Village Homes
for Prisoners' Children. The latter in
stitution was really started by the duch
ess and bears her name. Besides a
large and ever increasing circle of
friends, the duchess and her daughter
are very popular with other members
of the royal family. Like the princess of
Wales, H. R. H. is a very careful
mother, and the first visit her daughter
was ever allowed to pay alone is be
lieved to have been that which she paid
to the queen just before her engage
ment to the duke of Clarence was an
nounced. Possessing much of the queen's elo
quence and clearness of enunciation the
duchess on the many occasions on which
she has to speak in public always
delivers thoroughly apropos little
speeches, and her brevity and good
sense ought to be a lesson to many a
long-winded member of parliament and
other more or less important person
ages who are called upon to attend pub
lic ceremonials.
While Mr. T. J. Richey of Altona,
Mo., waB traveling in Kansas he was
taken violently ill with cholera morbus.

For hauling 400 to 500 bales of wool
from Little Trout creek, fourteen miles
south of Antelope, to The Dalles, also for
40,000 pounds more or less return freight
(heavy goods, groceries, etc.) to be
hauled from The Dalles to Little Trout
creek or to Muddy station, a point about
eighteen miles southeast of Antelope, as
the undersigned may elect. All of said
freight and wool to be carefully handled
and thoroughly protected with good
substantial wagon sheets or covers, and
to be delivered in as good order and con
dition as received. First loading may
be commenced May 20th, 1893, and all
wool and freight must be delivered by
July 1st, 1893. Delay occasioned by the
undersigned will be extended on con
tract. Terms one-half cash on delivery
of each load (if desired), and remainder
on completion of contract. Right to
reject any and all bids reserved. All
bids must be submitted by May 5th,
