WEDNESDAY, - - - - MAY 3, 1893 The speaking contests are doing a great work for prohibitionists all over the country. If their political tactics were always as pare as the beverage they advocate they would not have to wait long to become a power in the land. But their treatment of the repub licans in Iowa has not won for them the respect they arc ordinarily entitled to. Zowa won prohibition through the re publicans, who inserted a prohibition plank in their platform and carried the state for them. In the last presidential election the prohibitionists, unmindful of the great obligation they owed the repub licans, voted their own ticket, instead of the republican ticket, and thus gave Iowa to the democrats, by a larger ma jority than it ever hoped to secure. This was wrong and thoughtless on the part of the prohibitionists, and they will suffer to the extent of the wrong done, which is in pursuance of a universal law. Kansas secured her prohibition directly through the prohibitionists themselves, and they thus owe no party any favors, but what a nice example of appreciation and gratitude it would have been had the prohibitionists of Kansas allied themselves with the republicans and carried Kansas for Harrison last year, instead of losing Iowa for them. Onr own business presents an ample Geld for our best endeavors, and if others were as pleasantly situated, we should not have the great amount of legal ad vice now being thrust on us by our con temporaries. It may be foolish, per haps, on our part, but we prefer to en gage our advice, whenever we are in need of it, from the ranks of the legal profession and those who would have no interest in misleading ns and insisting that we have no case. It may be' true that the Sun considers it news, as it says, to run the double-column financial statement of the county clerk. That paper's news is generally about as dry as these interesting statistics ordinarily are, "but we do not think so, neither do oar largely-increasing number of read ers. And we leieve the Sun will be lie itself by putting in a bill for this very piece of news, which it insists, with singular inconsistency, is purely news and of vital interest and importance. TFhe rafmner of settling the Behring aea-question now under discussion at Paris, viz., by arbitration, is one of the best evidences of Nineteenth century enlightenment, and may be a token of the begin ing of the period leading to the tnillenium. Much less cause than this Has heretofore driven nations to a bloody jjardnvolving the loss of hundreds of iveB,-nd wholesale destruction of prop jrty. As Americans we should be glad to win in the momentous contest. It is vjut natural that patriotic pride should iiope for a decision favorable to this igovernment, but those who should know most about the controversy recognize the doubtful character of some of the propositions advanced in the American case. It is also estimated that the .American case has been weakened by the recent declaration that her territor ial claims only extend thirty miles from the shore line, and as she can transfer "jo more than she possesses, the United States must be bound by what Russia has declared, provided it be correct. Recorder Menefee works on an average of six hours every day at his office, some days being employed the full ten boars. If he were paid $50 a month for these services his intelligent and special ized work would command a little less than 35 cents an hour. If there is any Sawyer in this town who does not make more than 35 cents an hour for time em ployed, he had better abandon his pro fession and go to sawing wood. A huge leather trust is the latest one for general execration among the lead ing dealers in New York, Boston and Baltimore. The democrats promised us immunity from trusts if we would only give them a chance by electing them. Wish they would keep their word. Norway Seeking: Separation. The union between Sweden and Nor way is in great danger of being broken. The two states are loosely tied, but the Norwegians are impatient of their slight fetters, and, under cover of a re quest for separate foreign agents, seek a total separation. The king in vain suggested a compromise, and it is stated that the radicals have resolved, ii he re fuses to establish two foreign minis tries, to resign and refuse the supplies. It is scarcely possible that the king should yield, as his foreign policy would become unworkable the Norwegians for example, desire close relations with Russia yet, if he does not, he must oc cupy Norway with Swedish troops, to the confusion of the finances and the production of another great and defi nite grievance in Norway. The true motives of the movement are the Nor wegian dislike of the Swedes, whom they regard as supercilious, and the ad vance of theoretic democracy in Nor way to a point inconsistent with any monarchy at all.
