A city that has attained in fifty years a growth that entitles.it to entertain the guests of the world has reason for self congratulation. That the world's fair opened today is the greatest exhibit ever made in the history of the world is certain. Never before has there been aggregated at one locality so many grand and curious things, all that is notewor thy of invention in an age of invention ; and certainly never before has there been eo much rapid transit of millions of tons of exhibits and humanity as in the last two years has returned in the count less iron arteries and veins to the great heart at Chicago. Chicago has been aptly called the marvel of city building of the world. It seems scarcely credible that on March 4th, 1S93, it celebrated its fifty-sixth an niversary as a corporation, and that in this half century it has grown from a little village to the second city of the country, with a population, according to the United States census of 1890, of 1,20S,669. The sky-scraping business buildings, palatial residences, great manufactories, magnificent streets, and imposing public institutions will at once impress visitors with the true greatness of this metropolis of the west. Yet the purpose of the world's fair cannot be said to be merely a love of pomps and vanities. Commercial ri valry is not less strong among nations than it is among individuals, and that ambition to excel, for 'substantial re vard, as well as for honor, possesses and animates the integer, just as it does the fractional part of the political unit. The utilitarian spirit of ;the age is toward commercial cain, but while desire for greater riches is a confessedly powerful motive, the underlying ambition of nations that most largely prompts these displays is a sincere hope, crystalized in effort, to advance and improve the social condition, to educate, inspire, encour age ; for in these .ambitions only can national glory be attained. Attorney Ueneral Olney was the chief legal adviser of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railway company and also of the Boston & Maine. Mr. Olney has been holding office under President Cleveland for six weeks and he has not resigned his legal positions with the roads named. On the contrary he has been consulted by them in the last few days. Mr. Olney's new position should make him invaluable to the corporations named and they should increase his salary. It cannot be said that such en tanglements will add to his efficiency as the attorney general of the United States. Miss Mabel .lenness win lecture in various coast cities on dress reform She is reported to be handsome, refined and gracefnl, without any of the extreme womans rights mannerisms which give a man the cold chills. She believes there is room for improvement in woman's dress ; that woman can be at tractive and beautiful in the eyes of man without making herself uncomfortable or feel that she is in danger of bursting a stay and. scattering herself around promiscuously. Mississippi is now almost a prohibi tion state. By a new law in that state the electorate is confined to persons of intelligence and capacity. It is found that the liquor element belong to the ignorant class and are disfranchised and counties that have formerly gone '.'wet" now go "dry." The daily reports of Booth's condition indicate that he is a very sick man and probably he will not see the end of the week. Booth was a most painstak ing actor, though it is said he possessed less natural talent than his father, jMfFbose brilliancy was thought to be due to certain per cent, of madness. weeney, U. b. Italy has had no national anthem, for neither the "Garibaldi Hymn" nor the "Royal March can justly lay claim to this title, uermany does not possess a national song in the true sense of the word. Kovener's "Sword Song" is fa mous because of the romantic circum stances under which it was composed; while the " Wacht am Rhein" owes its popularity to its applicability during the Franco-German war. Some, how ever, consider "Heildir im Siegerkranz," which is none' other than the air "God Save the Queen," as the national anthem of the fatherland. Spain is not more fortunate than Italy or Germany. She has many pretty songs, but sone of them can be said to breathe a purely national feeling. My wife wa con lined to her oed for over two months with a very severe a tack of rheumatism. We could get nothing that would afford htr any re lief, and as a last resort gave Chamber Iain's Pain Balm a trial. To our great surprise she began to improve after the first application, and by using it regu larly she was soon able to get up and attend to her house work. . H. John son, of C. J.
