OREGON AT THE WORLD'S FAIR.
The following is a list of the superintendents
of the different departments of the world's fair
commission. Anyone who has anything to ex
hibit should correspond with the proper officer,
one of the following:
W. F. MATLOCK, department of agriculture,
forestry and forest prooucts, and live stock;
Pendleton.
C. W, AYERS, department of mines, mining
and metallurgy ; Ashland.
DR. J. R. CARDWELL, department of horti
culture, including floriculture and viticulture;
Portland.
GEO. T. MYERS, department of fishinc and
Ashing apparatus, manufactures, electrical and
mechanical inventions; Portland.
MRS. M. PAYTON. balem, (until July 1, 1893)
and MRS. E. W. ALLEN, Portland, (after July 1,
1893), department of woman's work, comprising
the fine arts, lions, hold economy and products
thereof.
E. B. McELROY, department of education,
Including educational exhibits, literary, special,
general, music, etc. ; 8alem.
GEO. W. McBRIDK, department of civil gov
ernment, including state and county ; Salem.
An article in a Salem paper relates
how the Salem insane asylum would do
in case of fire. The enterprising Doctor
Rowland has inaugurated a regular
weekly fire drill, the alarm is given and
the patients hustled out in very quick
order. The doctor is wise in inaugurat
ing this drill, as it might mean the sav
ing of hundreds of lives in case of a fire.
We have read of insane asylum hola
causts in the last year or two where
more than 90 per cent, of the inmates
were burned to death. It is one of the
most difficult things in the world to do
to eave the lives of insane patients on
the sudden outbreaking of a fire. The
numberless doors are all locked, and
with the Babe! of excitement of patients,
and the alarm natural to the feminine
attendants, the chances are in favor of
almost a total death rate of the patients.
In a late test, however, the patients
even in the violent ward, were turned
out in the yard at dead of midnight, and
a hose dragged through the halls within
two minutes of the giving of the alarm.
"'One Toolable particular wherein the
World's Columbian exposition differs
from the previous world's fair is the
prominence of women in its manage
ment. There will be no separate exhibit
of woman '8 work, the board having de
cided that to be inexpedient; but in the
woman's building, which is designed for
administrative and other purposes, will
be a showing of such things as women
are particularly and vitally interested
in, and which do not properly belong to
the general competitive classification.
The lady managers have invited the
women of all countries to participation
in the exposition. Numerous foreign
committees, comprised of women, have
already been formed, and are now in
successful co-operation with the official
board.
The mile or more of road beyond Mill
creek bridge, made under the direction
of Mr. Staniels, reveals a good deal, and
is a better argument for good roads than
all the newspapers may say. Every
farmer should take an active interest in
this most important work, for the rea
son that the farmers, above all other
classes, suffer loss because of bad roads.
Everybody knows that the best time to
sell farm products is duriug the winter
season. Then is when such products
are in demand, and then is when they
bring the best prices. But just then is
when tbey cannot be hauled to market
because of bad roads ; hence the farmer
living some distance from his home
market or shipping point, is compelled
to wait for better roads and poorer
prices.
A good deal has been said about Ore
gon being such a Blow state, but the
fact is she has spent many thousands of
-dollars in advertising for immigration,
and has been measurably successful.' If
as mucti attention was paid to them
upon their arrival as is paid in endeav
oring to get them here, the per cent of
stayers would be much larger. The Do
minion government has set an example,
judging from the following letter of a
Palouse farmer who has removed to Al
berta, B. C. : "This government certainly
does more for their immigrants and is
more attentive to their wants than any
of your people could think of. Even
lights and wood are furnished, and all
preparations are being made to furnish
temporary shelter and accommoda
tions." The crank's bullet has lately sought
Gladstone as a target, and it seems only
failed of its misson on account of a sud
den weakening of the intention of the
crank. Gladstone has lived to be an
octogenarian and has world-wide credit
for a life of self -sacrifice for the interest
of others and sad indeed would be hia
death by violent means.

The ScotcH Clcrgvmnn and His SnufC
A Scotch clergyman, much addicted
to snuff, resolved to abandon the habit
and preached a sermon against it.
Some little time afterward, during the
coarse of a sermon on another subject,
one of the elders, sitting immediately
under the pulpit and within reach of
the preacher, took a comfortable pinch,
which so sorely tried the minister's
self denial that he stretched out his
hand and, seizing the box, thus ad
dressed the astonished elder: "After
the sermon that I so lately preached
against the vice of snuffing, how can
you venture, sir, to do this (tapping on
the lid), and this (opening the box), and
this (taking a copious pinch)?" and then
handed back the box to its owner.
