OREGON AT THE WORLD'S FAIR.
The following Is a list of the superintendents
of the different departments of the world's fair
commission. Anyone who has anything to ex
hibit should correspond with the proper officer,
one of the following : -
W. F. MATLOCK, department of agriculture,
forestry and forest prooucts, and live stock;
Pendleton. , . .
C. W, AYERS, department of mines, mining
and metallurgy ; Ashland. .V-ii
DR. J. R. CARDWELL, department of horti
culture, including floriculture and viticulture;
Portland.
GEO. T. MYERS, department of fishing and
fishing apparatus, manufactures, electrical and
mechanical in ventions ; Portland.
MRS. M. PAYTON, balem, (until July 1, 18D3)
MRS E. W. ALLEN. Portland, (after July 1,
1893), department of woman's work, comprising
the fine arts, household economy and products
thereof. . .,
E. B. McELROY, department of education,
including educational exhibits, literary, special,
general, music, etc. ; oaieni.
GEO. W. McBRIDE, department of civil gov
ernment, including state and county ; Salem.
The Oregonian believes that electricity
in likelv to solve the road problem. In
Pennsylvania, where the common high
ways are as execrable as in most other
sections of the country, electric railways
aggregating hundreds of miles in length
have recently been projected, and no
doubt many miles will be constructed
within the year. These for the most
part will follow the beda of existing
country roads. It is not at all unlikely
that the interests of the wagon road and
the electric railway will be found to be
identical and inseparable. The farmer
will then have his market car or private
carriage switched off at his gate or taken
nn at his pleasure, and the days of
muddy, rough roads, jaded teams, bro
ken harness and collapsed vehicles will
belong to the past. Such is the dream
of the enthusiast in electrical science,
and it is justified to some extent, pos
sibly fully, by the promised improve
ments in the methods of applying elec
trical energy to machinery.
It is said that one of the president's
ideas of reform in the Indian service is
the detailing of army officers to act as
Indian agents, instead of the appoint
ment of civilians to these positions
This course would be a decided disap
pointment to many western congress
men, who have counted upon finding
places for constituents as Indian agents.
The president, however, is said to be
firm in the position he has taken in this
regard, and will not yield to the pressure
being brought to bear upon him by pol
iticians. He believes that an army offi
cer, by reason of a spirit of professions!
pride, has more incentive to make
good administration of an Indian agency
than a man who takes the place merely
for the money there is in it, and that the
public service will be benefited accord
ingly. The objection that in annexing Hawaii
we are adding a class of undesirable cit
izens, is fallacious. It is impossible that
the Kanakas, on small islands 2,100
miles away from our nearest coast, can
influence us one way or the other ; this
is as obvious as that we should care to
direct or influence their local interests,
of which we neither know nor care.
The feeling in some quarters seems to be
that if we annex, the whole savage horde
will flock over to our shores, insist on
the right of suffrage at once, dabble in
stocks and set up heathenish rites. No
such thing will happen. They will pre
serve their autonomy, just as much as
formerly, and the fact that they are a
part of the American nation will have
no more effect than the inhabitants of
India have upon the management of the
bank of England.
Keeley's chloride of gold cure for in
toxication is likely to have a serious
and most agreeable rival in the use of
apples, if the alleged discovery of a
German doctor amounts to anything,
says the American Cider Maker. Ac
cording to the latter authority, there
is no cheaper or more effective method
of curing inebriation than to eat apples
freely. The patient is to use them in
allopathic doses. That is, he is to
eat apples, and after that more apples.
The doctor claims certain success in the
worst cases of dipsomania, if the apple
cure is steadfastly pursued. The remedy
can do no harm, in any event, and is
worthy of investigation.
Hog-raising promises to be one of the
best paying business in which a farmer
can engage. The statistician of the de
partment of agriculture reports a de
crease of over 1,000,000 head in the stock
of live hogs in Great Britain, and the
shortage in Ireland is estimated at
1,200,000 head. Bacon and pork are ab
normally high as compared with the
prices of other meats, and the opinion
prevails that they will continue so for
some time.

son streets.)
Nothing funny About It.
Somebody Bays, remarks an exchange,
that a wagonmaker who was dumb for
years picked up a hub and spoke. Yes,
and a blind carpenter on the same day
reached out for a plane and saw, and a
deaf sheep ranchman went out with his
dog and herd, and a noseless fisherman
caught a barrel of herring and smelt,
and a defunct hatter was tenderly de
posited on a pile of hair and felt, and a
forty-ton elephant inserted his trunk
into a grate and flue.
Shiloh's cure, the Great Cough and
Croup Cure, is for sale by Snipes & Kin
ersly. Pocket size contains twenty-five
doses, only 25c. Children love it. Sold
by Snipes & Kinersly.
The savage patience shown in the
beauty with which the negroes of Africa
and the Indians of Alaska ornament
their weapons also mark to some extent
the negroes of the south, and a southern
negro's fishing tackle is sometimes
made in a fashion to excite the envy of
the most enthusiastic northern sports
man. A feeble teaman
is restored to health and strength,
by Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescrip
tion. If you're overworked, " run
down," or debilitated, you need it.
It's an invigorating, restorative
tonic, and a soothing and strength
ening nervine, imparting tone and
vigor to the whole system. It's a
legitimate medicine, too carefully
compounded by an experienced phy
sician, and adapted to woman's deli
cate organization. For all the
chronic weaknesses, functional de
rangements, and painful disorders
peculiar to the sex, it is an unfailing
remedy. It's because it is unfail
ing that it can be sold under a posi
tive guarantee. If it fails to give
satisfaction, in any case for which
it's recommended, the money paid
for it will be promptly returned.
It is a legitimate medicine not
a beverage. Contains no alcohol
to inebriate ; no syrup or sugar to
sour or ferment in the stomach
and cause distress. As peculiar in
its marvelous, remedial results au
in its composition.

ITS TERRITORY.
It is the supply city for an extensive and rich agricultural
and grazing country, its trade reaching as far south as Bummer
Lake, a distance of over two hundred miles.
The Largest Wool Market.
The rich grazing country along the eastern slope of the Cas
cades furnishes pasture for thousands of sheep, the wool from
which finds market here.
The Dalles is the largest original wool shipping point in
America, about 5,000,000 pounds being shipped last year.
ITS PRODUCTS.
The salmon fisheries are the finest on the Columbia, yielding
this year a revenue of thousands of dollars, which will be more
than doubled in the near future.
The products of the beautiful Klickitat valley find market
here, and the country south and east has this year filled the
warehouses, and all available storage places to overflowing with
their products.
ITS WEALTH.
It is the richest city of its size on the coast and its money is
scattered over and is being used to develop more farming country
than is tributary to any other city in Eastern Oregon.
Its situation is unsurpassed. Its climate delightful Its pos
sibilities incalculable. Its resources unlimited. And on these
sorner stones she stands.
