OKGGON AT THIS WORLD'S FAIR.
The following is a list of the superintendents
of the different departments of the world's fair
commission. Anyone who has anything to ex
hibit should correspond with the proper officer,
one of the following:
W. F. MATLOCK, department of agriculture,
forestry and forest products, and live stock;
Pendleton.
C. W, AYERS, department of mines, mining
and metallurgy ; Ashland.
DR. J. R. CARDVVELL, department of horti
culture, including floricultuic and viticulture;
Portland.
GEO. T. MYERS, department of fishing and
fishing apparatus, manufactures, electrical and
mechanical inventions: Portland.
MRS. M. PAYTON, balein, (until July 1, 1893)
mid MRS. E. W. ALLEN, Portland, (after July 1,
1893), department of woman's work, comprising
the tine arts, houst hold economy and products
thereof.
E. B. MCELROY, department of education,
i' eluding educational exhibits, literary, special,
general, music, etc. ; Salem.
GEO. W. McBRlDE, department of civil gov
ernment, including state and county : Salem.
Secretary Carlisle's policy does not
give satisfaction to the bankers of Wall
street; in fact they claim to not be able
to see any policy at all in his press ut
terances. The powers of Europe are de
manding gold in anticipation of an im
pending war, and it has been said that
Wall street is trying to force a panic.
Against that event the secretary is guard
ing by all expedients at his command.
The difficulty might find, an easy solu
tion by issuing bonds, or by making use
of those already issued, which will not
all mature until 1907. With the amount
of gold yet in the, country, over $10 per
capita, it should not become rare under
. xtraordinary demands, and since no
notes are now issued in less than $5 de
nominations, the great amount of silver
should not be burdensome. The per
capita of silver coin in the United States
is but $5, or half the amount of gold.
The remainder of the per capita circula
tion is in the various notes by the gov
ernment, national banks and silver cer
tificates, amounting to about $11. The
Bilver in the treasury might be used in
payment of the running expenses of the
government, which would thus be put
in circulation and dispense with the cry
of the immense surplus lying unused in
-the treasury vaults.
Secretary Carlisle is a past master in
finances, and has besides vast judicial
as well as political experience, and it is
believed if let alone would strer safely
through the Scylla and Charybdis of our
present perilous situation. But Cleve
land is "boss," and would not appoint
anyone in his cabinet whom he could
iot dominate, hence we are left compara
tively at the mercy of the chief executive.
What is to be said of the striking min
sters in Salem? They have adopted the
tv.ile of $5 per sermon at state insti
tutions, and non-union ministers may
not fill a pulpit unless with their con
sent. At first blush the matter has a
a comical phase, in that the divinely-appointed
shepherds should refuse to dis
pense the gospel unless for "union"
wages. It is hardly probable they are
! ing the instructions of the Master
workman, and if not tolerated by Him,
it is extremely probable that they will
be asked to resign by the several con
uces. who may contend that the pro
rata per vard has nothing to do with the
i'.ible injunction, "Go ye into all the!
world and preach the gospel without
;noneyand without price.
Much has lieen said and written about
lle over-working themselves and
wearing themselves out, but a great
deal of this advice is the merest
"rot" and when given to the young man
it starting out in life has a very dam
aging effect. Ketter tell the young man
i set his aim in life high, and labor
hard, early and late, in rain and shine,
and acheive success. Better be found
worn out in trying to get up the rounds
of the ladder, than to live to an old age
and have nothing to show for a life
spent on this earth. "West Side."
President Cleveland has made more
..tnges up to today than he did eight
ars ago, after the same time spent in
the White House. According to some
authorities, he has made more than any
executive Bince Grant. This will be
heering news to the small army still at
Washington and some thousands of
others who got discouraged too quick
and left that city.
Secretary Gresham has received a re
port from Commissioner Blount, of his
aotion at Honolulu, but states that he
has nothing togiveput about it. Query,
is he not ashamed to state the facts, and
wishes to temporize as long as possible?
