WHITTLING PARTIES.
Bow Rural la ts In Northeastern Pennsyl
vania Amuse Themselves in Winter.
Whittling parties are all the rage
this winter in the rural districts of
northeastern Pennsylvania. They have
taken the place of apple bees and other
social amusements, and they are the
most popular evening diversions the
young men and maidens now have. The
desire to become nkillful with the jack
lcnif e got to be a craze in some heigh
borhoods. Nearly all of the whittlers
are the descendants of Yankee farmers,
and therefore, says the New Vork Sun,
handle the jackknife with dexterity.
The whittling contests take place in
the farmhouse kitchens, the whittlers
and their families having been invited
by the man who gives the party. He
iurnishes all the wood, and he puts np
prizes of two dollars and one dollar
for the most perfect and second best ax
helve, hammer handle, potato mdSher,
or other useful things, and he appoints
three disinterested men of good judg
ment to decide on the merits of the
work turned out. Their decision is
final, and the things shaped out of wood
that evening become the property of
the giver of the prizes. The only im
plements allowed in the contests are a
jackknife and a file, and the work must
be finished within tvo hours.
Rosy-cheeked girls compete with the
young men for the prizes. Some of
them are expert with the jackknife and
can whittle faster and to a better pur
pose than their competitors of the other
Bex. In Palmyra township one night
last week a bright-eyed girl of nineteen
whittled, filed and sandpaperetl out of
a piece of ash as shapely a rolling pin
as the most particular housewife could
wish for. She did the work in an hour
and twenty minutes, and she won the
first prize in a company of seven com
petitors. If the prize giver decides
to get his guests to work on hickory
ax helves, they have to submit to it; if
there are more women than men com
' petitors, the giver of the party almost
invariably favors the former by select
ing something that will be easier to
whittle than an ax helve. While the
whittlers are busy the non-whittlers
have a jolly time in other parts of the
house playing cards and chatting, and
occasionally peering into the kitchen
to see how the contestants are getting
along with their work. The kitchen is
cleared as soon as the prizes have been
awarded, supper is served in the front
rooms, and by midnight the whittlers
and their companions are on their way
home.
"Patent medicines differ One has
reasonableness, another has not. One
has reputation another has not. One
iias confidence, born of success, another
lias only "hopes." Don't take it for
granted that all patent medicines are
alike. They are not. Let the years of
uninterrupted success and the tens of
thousands of cured and happy men and
women, place Dr. Pierce's Golden Med
ical Discovery and Dr. Pierce's Favorite
Prescription on the Bide of the compari
Hon to which they belong- And there
isn't a state or territory, no nor hardly
a country in the world, whether its peo
ple realize it or not, but have men and
women in them that're happier because
of their discovery and their effects.
Think of this in health. Think of it m
sickness. And then think whether you
you can afford to make the trial if the
makers can afford to take the risk to
eive vour money back, as they do, if
they do not benefit or cure you.
Snake bites caused the death of near
ly twenty-two thousand Hindoos last
year.
Now Try This.
It will cost you nothing and will sure
ly do you good, if you have a cough,
cold, or any trouble with throat, chest
or lungs. Dr. King's New Discovery for
consumption, coughs and colds is guar
anteed to give relief, or money will be
paid back. Sufferers from la grippe
found it just the thing and under its
ase had a speedy and thorough recov
eay. Try a sample bottle at our ex
pense, and learn for yourself just how
good a thing it is. Trial bottles free at
Snipes & Kinersly's drug store. Large
size 50c and $1.

The more Chamberlain's Cough Rem
edy is used the better it is liked. We
know of no other remedy that always
gives satisfaction. It is good when you
first catch cold. It is good when your
cough is seated and your lungs are sore.
It is .good in any kind of a cough. We
have sold twenty-five dozen of it and
every bottle has given satistaction.

So much trouble has rarely . been
taken to prepare athletic grounds for a
match as at Cardiff not long ago. The
occasion was a football match for the
championship of England and Wales.
Two hundred braziers or perforated
fire buckets were set up on the field,
and bonfires were kindled in many
parts of it, the flames being kept going
until the frost was thawed out of the
ground. Then the field was covered
with straw to retain the heat, and just
before the match began a small army
of men cleared and raked the ground.

THE DALLES,
Wasco County, ... Oregon,
The Gate City of the Inland Empire is situated at the head
of navigation on the Middle Columbia, and is a thriving, pros
perous city.
ITS TERRITORY.
It is the supply city for an extensive and rich agricultural
and grazing country, its trade reaching as far south as Summer
Lake, a distance of over two hundred miles.
The Largest Wool Market.
The rich grazing country along the eastern slope of the Cas
cades furnishes pasture for thousands of sheep, the wool from
which finds market here.
The Dalles is the largest original wool shipping point in
America, about 5,000,000 pounds being shipped last year.
ITS PRODUCTS.
The salmon fisheries are the finest on the Columbia, yielding
this year a revenue of thousands of dollars, which will be more
than doubled in the near future.
The products of the beautiful Klickitat valley find market
here, and the country south and east has this year filled the
warehouses, and all available storage places to overflowing with
their products.
ITS WEALTH.
It is the richest city of its size on the coast and its money is
scattered over and is being used to develop more farming country
than is tributary to any other city in Eastern Oregon.
Its situation is unsurpassed. Its climate delightful. Ita pos
sibilities incalculable. Its resources unlimited. And on these
