OREGON AT THK WORLD'S FA lit.
The following is a list of the superintendents
of the different departments of the world's fair
commission. Anyone who has anything to ex
hibit should correspond with the proper officer,
one of the following:
W. F. MATLOCK, department of agriculture,
forestry and forest prooucts, und live stock;
Pendleton.
C. W, AYERS, department of mines, mining
and metallurgy ; Ashland.
DR. J. R. CARDWELL, department of horti.
culture, including floriculture and viticulture:
Portland.
GEO. T. MYERS, department of fishing and
fishing apparatus, manufactures, electrical and
mechanical inventions; Portland.
MRS. M. PAYTON, Halem, (until July 1, 1S93)
and MRS. E. W. ALLEN, Portland, (after July 1,
1893), department of woman's work, compiising
the fine arts, nous, hold economy and products
thereof.
E. B. MCELROY, department of education,
including educational exhibits, literary, special,
general, music, etc. ; Salem.
GEO. V. McBRIDE, department of civil gov
ernment, including state and county; Salem.
Congressmen are mortified by the
slowness with which their applications
for appointments have been granted and
the lightness of what they had supposed
to be their heavy-weight influence, but
they are reluctantly disposed to grant
President Cleveland the credit of run
ning a strictly business administration.
Ample evidence of his disposition to lop
off all superfluities and bring the cost of
operating the government machinery to
as low a total as is consistent with ef
fectiveness is furnished by various re
movals in the several departments made
under his instructions. The trouble to
the congressmen is that these removals
do not mean vacancies. The places are
simply wiped out of existence, and noth
ing is left for the democrat who stands
and gazes blankly at the spot where
something was but a moment before and
now nothing is. Home of them go as far
as to call it a penny-wise-and-pound-foolish
policy, but that does not help
matters any, and does not meet with
much approval from people who are not
seeking office.
There it goes again. The Hood River
Glacier is tho latest to kick over the
traces. The Glacier says in its last is
sue : "We have received a clipping from
the Oregonian that would about fill one
of our columns, with a note of two
words: 'Please publish.' The clipping
was headed 'World's Fair,' but does
not mention anything except 'Mr.
Myers.' It is passing strange that the
legislature cannot provide for creating a
commission so that it will not be at
once headed by a damphool. This lump
of concentrated gall, Myers, asks us to
give him a column in which to remark
that 'Mr. Myers has been to Chicago,
Mr. Myers has returned from Chicago,
and Mr. Myers expects to go back to
Chicago. It don't go. Mr. Myers can
go to Hel-ena."
The Spokane Review has received a
number of letters censuring Rev. Nelson
Clark for his course in advising his
daughter to discontinue the attentions of
E. Ross Smith. The Review very sen
sibly coincides with the father of the
murdered girl adding that the frightful
deed of the murderer and suicide was
"demonstration of the correctness of the
father's estimate of the character of the
young man suing for his daughter's
hand in marriage." If theromantically
disposed youth had survived by five
years this particular period of his
adolescence there is little chance that
he would have been the author of a
tragedy. But that does not alter the
conclusion that since he did so he was
afflicted with mania, differing only in its
greater intensity from that common to
18 to 20-year-oldings.
In 1788 Messrs. Phelps & Gorham se
cured 6,000,000 acres of land, including
all of Western New York, at about four
cents an acre. A few years later the
Holland Land company purchased the
land between the Genessee and Niagara
rivers, and Joseph Ellicott selected the
site for the present city of Buffalo. In
100 years it has grown from a vast wil
derness, with but one white man, to one
of the finest cities in the world, with a
population of 300,000. A pretty good
sample of American progress, this.
The numerous late mining finds in
various sections give promise that Ore
gon may be the leading mining state.
It is 'probable that less attention has
been given to Oregon by miners than
any other Western state, and if the
number of prospect holes with which
California and Nevada are punctured
were a feature of Oregon, it is probable
that the output would closely approxi
mate that of either of these famous gold
producers. The national meeting of state boards
of health at New York resulted in a di
vision of the different districts, as being
better for handling the cholera question,
since the same rules will not apply for
the best methods in all alike. The surgeon-general
of the marine service will
make a thorough investigation into the
present condition of affairs in Russia,
which is now so artfully covered up by
the czar and his officials.

spoken of as a Treat bent pump or sy
phon tube, drawing' water from the
earth by mechanical means. In parts
of Russia, in the Don country, and also
in Moscow and vicinity, it is known by
a name which is equivalent to "the bent
water pipe."
My wife was confined to her bed for
over two months with a very severe at
tack ot rheumatism. We could get
nothing that would afford htr any re
lief, and as a last resort gave Chamber
lain's Pain Balm a trial. To our great
surprise she began to improve after the
first application, and by using it regu
larly she was soon able to get up and
attend to her house work. E. H. John

Yet the patient owes recovery
( Not to those doctors, but to
Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery).
There are some patent medicines that are
more marvelous than a dozen doctors' pre
scriptions, but they're not those that profess
to cure everything.
Everybody, now and then, feels "run
down," " played out." They've the will, but
no power to generate vitality. They're not
sick enough to call a doctor, but just too sick
to bo well. That's where the right kind of
a patent medicine comes in, and does for a
dol lar what tho doctor wouldn't do for leas
than five or ten.
Wo put in our claim for Dr. Pieroo's Gold

Wo claim it to be an unequaled remedy to
purify the blood and invigorate the whole
system.
