hibit shonld correspond with the proper officer,

and metallurgy ; Ashland.

culture, including floriculture and viticulture;

fishing apparatus, manufactures, electrical and
mechanical inventions; Portland.

1893), department of woman's work, compiling

WEIGH WELL THE CLAIMS.
would compensate tor it, if borne equally
by all. The city council have the au
thority to enforce good sewerage, and it
is gratifying to be able to state that
they are also willing and anxious to do
60.
While speaking upon this subject it
would be pertinent to add that the main
sewers leading down Washington, Court,
Union and Liberty streets should lead
clear through to low water, as the offen
sive accumulations at their present
termini are nearly as bad, from a sani
tary point of view, as if no sewers ex
isted. There is no reason, it would
seem, why the whole 6ewer problem
could not be disposed of with the pres
ent administration. It is a Herculean
task, we will concede, yet not
too great for the capable men now com
posing the city council.
A gentleman said yesterday that he
believed the asylum commission had
already made their determination as to
the location for the asylum, but did not
know which place was selected. The
Chronicle believes that, while it is
quite likelj' they have chosen one place
as the best from the field they have al
ready seen, they are too honorable to
definitely decide while there are yet
claimants in the field whose merits have
not been investigated.
That the Irvine place would be a boon
to insane patients is not a matter of
doubt to all who are informed. This
place is rarely gifted by nature. It is
beautiful beyond all competition. It
remains to show whether or not it is
best for health, and whether good sani
tation is possible. The Irvine place is
120 feet above sea level. Is a low alti
tude preferable to a high one for suffer
ers of this peculiar affliction? Then, our
climate is shown by meteorological sta
tistics to be dryer and better suited to
those suffering from lung trouble, who
constitute so large a per cent, of human
ity. A breeze blows on an average 180
days in the year. Is not a slight wind
calculated to dispose of malaria and all
forms of malignant and contagious
diseases?
The asylum is in one sense a vast
prison house, wherein some of the in
mates never see beyond the confines of
their limited horizon. Would it not be
merciful to show them as great a diver
sity of scenery as possible? We have
the grand mountains, both in the near
and far background, fields of grain,
acres on acres of waving grass, all the
varied native trees on the grounds ; three
miles away is the picturesque city of
The Dalles, and nearer yet is the mighty
river, bearing on its bosom all manner
of boats and river craft, that the open
ing of the locks will bring.
What point offers the best Rewerage?
No point can compete with the Colum
bia river. The sewerage caused by 100,
000 people is not sufficient to contamin
ate the tremendous volume of the Col
umbia after flowing three miles. A
running brook purifies itself with
twenty-five miles of flow. A natural
and easy grade exists from the site to
the river.
The Dalles is not in the geographical
center of the region affected, but does
this make a difference? For example,
say three commitments are made, one
from Baker, one from Pendleton and
one from The Dalles. If located at
Baker the fare would be $16.48, if at
Pendleton $10.76, and if at The Dalles,
$16.48. But it must be considered that
The Dalles is the outlet for the whole of
Crook and a portion of Grant county
As we said before, The Dalles does not
want the asylum unless it will be for the
very best interests of the patients, and
to assure these interests the claims of
this point should be considered fairly,
along with all the others.

esty, attachment to the mother country
and proud belief in the destiny of the
British race.
GOOD SEWERS.
The Dalles needs a good sewer system
one of terra cotta. It never pays to
do anything for temporary use that is
required permanently, and particularly
is this true of sewers. Where wooden
sewers have been put in much expense
has already occurred, especially on
Court, Union and Washington streets.
Liberty street has more recently been
provided with the wooden sewer, but it,
too, will soon need attention. This
matter of re-excavating and patching up
rotten sewers is expensive and not in
the least satisfactory, and no level
headed citizen who gives the matter the
proper amount of thought will permit
wood instead of terra cotta being used.
The Washington street sewer shonld be
extended on up so as to drain the large
residence portion in the neighborhood
of the Mays, Sellick and Beezley prop
erties, etc., and the Academy vicinity,
where there is now a regular sink hole.
To be sure the expense from the corner
of Washington and Fifth to Laughlin
and Fulton (or Fifth) wquld be consid
erable, these two blocks being very
rocky, bat the easy digging from there

right at the seat of difficulty, is accom
plished by the sure and steady aim of
Dr. Sage's Catarrh Remedy. Don't
fool around with a pop-gun, nor &
" Flint-lock." when this reliable "Win
chester " is within reach !
Dr. Saere's treatment of Catarrh in the
Head is far superior to the ordinary, and
when directions are reasonably well
followed, results in a permanent cure.
Don't longer be indifferent to the veri
fied claims of this unfailing Remedy.
The worst forms of Catarrh disap
pear with the use of Dr. Sage's Catarrh
Remedy. Its mild, soothing, cleansing
and healing properties effect a perfect
and permanent cure, no matter now Dau
the case, or of now long standing, iva
a remedy that succeeds where every
thing else has failed. Thousands of
such cases can be pointed out. That's
the reason its makers back their faith in
it with money. They offer 500 reward
for a case of Catarrh which they can
not cure.
It's a medicine that allows them to
take such a risk.
Doesn't common sense lead you to
take such a medicine?
"An advertising fake" you say.
Funny, isn't it, how some people pre
fer sickness to health when the remedy
is positive and the guarantee absolute.
Wise men don't put money back of
"fakes." And faking" doesn't pay.
