It cured me in three days. I am all right today ; and would insist on every one who is afflicted with that terrible disease to use Chamberlain's Pain Balm and get well at once." 50 cent bottles for sale by Blakeley & Houghton, druggists. The Average Life In Thirty-eight Years. The annual mortality of the entire human race amounts, ronghly speaking, to 33,000,000 persons. This makes the average deaths per day over 91,000, be ing at the rate of 3.7o0 an hour, or 63 people every minute of the day and night the year round. A fourth of the race die before completing their eighth year, and one-half before the end of the seventeenth year, bnt the average dura tion of life is about thirty -eight years. When Mrs. Million goes to ride she travels forth in state, Dor horses, full of fire and pride, go prancing from the gate: But all the beauties of the day bhc views with languid eye, Her flesh in weakness wastes away, her voice is but a sigh. For Mrs. Million is in an advanced stage of catarrh, and all the luxuries that wealth can buy fail to give her com fort. She envies her rosy waiting-maid, and would give all her riches for that young woman's pare breath and bloom ing health. Now, if some true and dis interested friend would advise Mrs. Mil lion of the wonderful merits of Dr. Sage's Catarrh Remedy, she would learn that her case is not past help. $500 reward is offered by the manufacur ers for a case of catarrh in the head which thev cannot cure. The girl, Belle Ogg, who was married last Saturday night to Thomas Orby White and decamped the next day, came back to Pendleton on Thursday's W. & C. R. R. train. Her story to her par ents, as related by her stepfather, was to the effect that herself and companion, Julia Latimer, occupied room 28 Sunday night at the Golden Rule hotel, their meals being carried up to them. They left town oh Monday morning's train, and stopped off at Hunt's junction. They then walked to Wallula, and went from the sandy city to Moscow, Idaho. Here their store of pocket money soon became exhausted, but Belle was re sourceful and pawned a gold watch giyen her by her mother. This money was divided between the two girls and they separated. The Latimer charmer said she would go to Spokane in search of better fortune, and the runaway bride concluded to return home. It is stated that the bride is willing now to join the husband whom she deserted, but the opportunity is not offered. It is the in tent ion to ship her to the home of her grandmother, in Clackamas county, in the hope that reformation may be effected, as she is not yet seventeen years old. She will be accompanied on the journey by her mother. East Ore gonian. ' . The strongest recommendation that any article can have is the endorsement of the mothers of the town. When the mothers recommend it you may know that that article has more than ordinary merit. Here is what the Centerville, South Dakota, Citizen says editorially of an article sold in their town : "From personal experience we can say that Chamberlain's Cough Remedy has broken up bad colds for our children. We are acquainted with many mothers in Centerville who would not be without it in the house for a good many times its cost, and are recommending it every day." 50 cent bottles for sale by Blake ley & Houghton, druggists. .Paper Floors That Will Not Barn. "The. people of this vicinity insist on having Chamberlain's Cough Remedy and do not want any other," says John V. Bishop, of Portland Mills, Indiana. That is right. They know it to be su perior to any other for colds, and as a preventive and cure for croup, and why should they not insist upon having it. 50 cent bottles for sale by Blakeley & Houghton, druggists. "Lighthouses are very expensive," re marked Mrs. Dimling, looking up from a government report. "Yes, any theatrical manager will tell you that," replied her husband. Detroit Free Press. , 338, 072. . These figures represent the number of bottles of Dr. King's New Discovery for consumption, coughs and colds, which were sold in the United States from March, '91 to March, '92. Two million, two hundred and twenty-eight thousand, six hundred and seventy-two bottles sold in one year, and each and every bottle was sold on a positive guarantee that money would be refunded if satis factory results did not follow its use. The secret of its success is plain. It never disappoints and can always be de pended on as the very best remedy for coughs, colds, etc. Price 50c. and $1.00. At Snipes & Kinersly's drug store. Not a monopolist. A Card to the Public. I would respectfully inform the pub lic that I have been able to procure a pretty fair outfit for raising or moving houses, and am willing to do that kind of work at reasonable figures. But I do wish it distinctly understood that, after looking at a job, I am to be the sole jud.ce of the price to be set upon the work that I am to undertake, or may do. If there is any person who may think that there is big money to be made at house moving in The Dalles, by doing work for less than I can do it, I would advise him to prepare himself, by buy ing tools, and reap some of the rich har vest. In conclusion I will say that if I am called upon to do any work in my line, I shall endeavor, in the future, as in the past, to give entire satisfaction in all respects to my employer. -Most Respectfully, Andrew Velarde. "Blond women . are becoming scarcer every year,", said an eminent anthropol ogist. "You have not lived long enough to remark the fact, but women with blue eyes and light hair are gradually passing away as a type. In each succes sive generation there are fewer of them than in the last. Already such a thing as a real blond, purely such, is so rarely seen in this country as to excite remark. Golden tresses are so very infrequent that real ones are usually suspects f being dyed. In short, it haa 1 evident that before very long there -,.-iU be no blond women any more. "The same thing is true of men. Among their sex light hair and blue eyes "are fast disappearing. Yon may judge how rapidly they are going when yon con sider the fact that wherever a brun ; .-i marries a blond woman or vice veru. i. i per cent, of the children born have d:iv' hair and eyes. At that rate not very many centuries will be required to wipe out the blond typo altogether. You wonder how this matter has been deter mined with such accuracy? Simply by including such statistical observation in the census of nations. In Germany and France the very school children, are ex amined and have their characters re corded from an anthropological stand point. .."Observations made in this way so as' to cover millions of persons of both sexes have resulted in the discovery that the dark people bring more chil dren into the world than do the liaht people. Furthermore, they have greater muscular vigor and they live . longer. Thus in every point which . has to do with the perpetuation of a species they are superior. The rule in nature seems to be that pigment which produces the color of the hair and eyes is an indica tion of force. Albinos among n-mmn.1 and pallid plants are always weak. "After all, there are comparatively few light people in the world. All the straight haired faces are dark. All the aboriginal Americans are dark, from the arctic circle to Cape Horn. All the Asiatics are dark. ' All the Oceanic peo ple are dark. All the Africans are dark, except a few blond tribes in the Bar bary states. Likewise all the southern Europeans are dark. The dark people nave the great advantage of being able to stand any climate, while the light complexioned races cannot endure the heat of the tropics. "An apparent contradiction to all this is afforded by the fact that wherever the light haired and bine eyed peoples have come into conflict with races of dark complexion the latter have always been defeated. The light people govern the world today. Queen Victoria has blue eyes, and the sun never Bets on her dominions. Descendants of Anglo-Saxons dominate the New World. ' Even South America, Africa and the civilized part of Asia are fairly run by the Eng lish and Germans. Germany leads all the nations of the earth in science and learning, and three-fourths of her popu lation are blue eyed. The yellow haired Swedes, Danes and Norwegians furnish the sailors of the world. English is the language of the globe. French has often been called the 'universal lan guage,' but it is in fact merely a court language outside of France. The Chi nese have a "pidgin' English, bnt not a pidgin French. All the modern jar gons of the world, for trade purposes, are modifications of English. "The blue eyed and light haired peo ple are by far the most brave of the moderns. By their superior intelligence and bravery they have conquered the world, bnt their task in : accomplishing this has implied an enormous strain upon their powers. So great a e train has not been conducive to the prolonga tion of their existence and to the perpet uation of their kind. Races of people are like breeds of horses and cattle, or like stocks in plants. They last for awhile, but not forever, disappearing sooner or later. If a severe strain is put upon them in one way or another, they will pass away so much the more quick ly. The high culture we are giving our children, stimulating their mental activ ities to the utmost, has the effect of re ducing the number and physical strength of their" offspring, thus shortening the life of their race. "So, owing to such causes as these, we find that the blue eyed and light haired people are diminishing in numbers at a very rapid rate. We take notice of it in the women particularly. Soon must we say, ' "Farewell, ye golden tresses and violet orbsr During centuries to come the dark people are destined to achieve and hold domination in the world, until, as is very likely, the cycle of complex ion has gone around and the blond shall rule again." r Washington Star.
