The Dalles, Oregon. OREGON AT THE WOKID'8 FAIR. The following is a list of the superintendents of the different departments of the world's fair commission. Anyone who has anything to ex hibit should correspond with the proper officer, one of the following: W. F. MATLOCK, department of agriculture, forestry and forest proaucts, and live stock; Pendleton. C. W, AYERS, department of mines, mining and metallurgy; Ashland. DR. J. R. CARDWELL, department of horti culture, including floriculture and viticulture; Portland. GEO. T. MYERS, department of fishing and fishing apparatus, manufactures, electrical and mechanical inventions; Portland. MRS. M. PAYTON, Salem, (until July 1, 1893) and MRS. E. W. ALLEN, Portland, (after July 1, XR93), department of woman's work, comprising the fine arts, household economy and products thereof. E. B. McELROY, department of education, including educational exhibits, literary, special, general, music, etc. ; Salem. GEO. W. McBRIDE, department of civil gov ernment, Including state and county ; Salem. Senator Dolph called upon the secre tary of the interior the other day regard ing the proposed timber reservation at ABhland.Or. It was understood that this reservation would be made during the last administration, but President Harrison did not find time to reach it. Secretary Smith told Senator Dolph that at present he was unable to do any thing regarding this reservation and was too busy reorganizing the depart ment to give any time or attention to the work of the department except that of most pressing nature. The necessity for having the Ashland reservation is said to be that the water supply of that town is dependent upon having the tim ber reservation, as the denudation of the lands where the water now comes from would probably result in greatly impairing the water supply. Wonderful Skill. SATURDAY, MAR. 25, 1893 Of the $60,000 appropriated for an er Libit at the world's fair, not one dollar was set apart for the newspapers. Al ready the late appointed superintend' ents of departments are besieging every newspaper office in the state with circu lar letters for publication and demand ing all the free advertisements they want. It Beems to us but right and just, that if the assistance of the newspaper is so important Jin getting up a display for Oregon at the fair, that the press should have the same consideration, at least of one of the commissioners. The newspapers are willing, always, and do give more labor to the up-building of all public good than any other profession or business, but that don't make it right to load the free horse with every enter prise that some can scheme to make money out of. Polk County Observer, On the morning of the last day's ses sion of the legislature Representative Scott, Populist, introduced the following resolution : "Whereas, this legislature is now within one day of the adjourn ment and very little has been done for the people; J therefore be it resolved, that it is the sense of this body that the members should return the amount of their per diem and mileage to the treas ury and pay the state a reasonable ren tal for the use of the capitol building." Mr. Scott gives evidence of good states manship which the future will doubtless develop. - Edward Atkinson, the eminent statis tician, estimates the pension payments will attain their highest 'point In 1894 when the total amount will reach $196, 000,000. After that date the pensioners -will begin decreasing at the rate of 85 in 1,000. On this basis he estimates that in 1895 the amount required for pension ..payments will be $148,000,000, and in 1896, $141,000,000. The adjudication of back claims, it will be seen, involves the extra expenditure of about $50,000,000 annually. Mr. Cleveland has given out the in formation that there must be no nepot ism in his administration. The rule was promulgated rather late. The Spokane Review points out that Secre tary Carlisle has appointed his son pri vate secretary, Isaac P. Gray has ap pointed his son private secretary to ac company him to Mexico, and Adlai Stevenson has appointed his son private secretary. As Hazzard puts it, "Oh damn the tariff. It's the offices we're After." Give the boys.in the nursery a show. The legislature of the young state of Washington has passed a bill making it unlawful for anyone to manufacture, boy, sell, give away, or have in posses sion. cigarettes or cigarette papers. This is sumptuary legislation with a ven geance. It's quite evident that Wash ington intends to conserve the mental and physical powers of her people even if she has to go Spartan methods several point 8 better in the doing of it.
