Talmage, was born twenty-fonr years ago in the house in which he now lives, at the corner of Joralemon and Clinton streets. He was educated at the Polytechnic institute, afterward completing his studies under private tutorship with Professor Caskia Harrison at the latter s sohool on Mem tague street. At the age of nineteen Sir. Talmage entered the offices of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western railroad, where he remained for some time. His health becoming somewhat Impaired, Mr. Talmage spent a year in California, which he devoted to the out door life of a sportsman, gaining much benefit thereby. Two years ago, short ly after his return from the west, he was made a member of the New York Stock exchange, being at the time of his ad mission next to the youngest member on the floor. Mr. Talmage is a member of the Crescent club, and is one of the financial committee recently engaged in negotiat ing the funds to carry through the building of the Bay Ridge house and making other improvements contem plated in connection therewith. He is a member of the Hamilton club, and his name has recently been added to the membership list of the Riding and TlriviTi rr r.lnh : "Mr. Talmnn'A la nn n. thusiastio lover of equestrian pastime, and is a sportsman of considerable "Trill, He is active in the social interests of the Heights, and is a member of the Brook lyn Heights assembly. Brooklyn Life. It seems inevitable that Sir Waltei Scott should sometimes err. When an author is throwing off brilliant romances at fever heat, in electric sympathy with a teeming brain and a tingling pulse, he cannot be expected to be overcareful. No one knew better than he a famous horseman himself the limits of endur ance in a horse. He makes Wilfred of Ivanhoe advise his enemy, the Templar, to take a fresh steed for the fierce tilt he was to run with him. Wilfred him self had no chargers of remount; he had but one steed, the gift of Isaac of York, and was compelled to run five successive courses in rapid succession on the unfor tunate animal. Horse and man were both sheathed in armor. The day was hot and sultry. No steed that ever was foaled could have stood the ordeal. Bnt this may bo hypercriticisin. Is it hyper- criticism also to point out that in the same novel a full century is dropped in such sort that one of Richard I's knights holds converse with a contemporary of the Conqueror, who was Richard's great-great-grandfather? Or that the "Fair Maid of Perth goes to mass in the after noon, whereas mass cannot be celebrated save in the earlier part of the day? Bel ford's Revi"v Three-days is a very short time in which to cure a bad case of rheumatism ; but it can be done, if the proper treat ment is adopted, as will be seen by the following from James Lambert, of New Brunswick, Ills. : "I was badly afflicted with rheumatism in the hips and legs, when I bought a bottle of Chamberlain's Pain Balm. It cured me in three days. I am all right today ; and would insist ,on every one who is afflicted . with that terrible disease to use Chamberlain's Pain Balm and get well at once." 50 cent bottles for sale by Blakeley & Houghton, druggists. The strongest recommendation that any article can have is the endorsement of the mothers of the town. When the mothers recommend it you may know that that article has more than ordinary merit. Here is what the Centeryille, South Dakota, Citizen says editorially of an article sold in their town : "From personal experience we can say that Chamberlain's Cough Remedy' - has broken up bad colds for our children. We are acquainted with many mothers in Centerville who would not be without it in the house for a good many times its cost, and are recommending it every day." 50 cent bottles for sale by Blake ley & Houghton, druggists. The marriage was the out come of a Etrange correspondence. A friend of Mrs. Stevens is in the employ of Nelson in Cheyenne, and suggested to him one evening that he knew of a woman who would make him an excel lent wife. Nelson agreed, if the fail creature should prove acceptable and could be won, to marry her. He imme diately wrote to Mrs. Stevens, setting forth that he was the owner of a large and paying ranch, was well off in the world and wanted some one to share " lot and help eat his potatoes. The lady was not averse to embarking in the matrimonial sea for a second time, and agreed that if everything was as repre sented and the man wad of a good moral character she would accept. She was fully satisfied on these points and they immediately considered them selves engaged. Business interests pre vented Nelson leaving home long enough to come to Lincoln and he did not wish to be so ungallant as to compel his be trothed to go to him, so they compro mised and agreed to meet at Grand Is land. Mrs. Stevens left for Grand Island, where the couple met for the first time. Both considered that they had secured a bargain and were made one at once. A letter' was received in this city from the happy bride, in which she says that f he is just glorious and too sweet for any thing. Cor. Omaha World-Herald. Collecting Baelc Sue. -The charming blond who presides at the registered letter window of the post office threw up her dainty hands with surprise a few days ago when a gentle -man walked up to the window, and up turning a big grip dumped its contents before her. There were 470 letters to be registered. Such a task had never be fore fallen to her lot. Her appeal for help brought the chief of the division, who provided help in the shape of three assistants for her, and the pile was soon disposed of. The man stood by until the receipts were given him. "The fact is," he explained, "I am sec retary of a fashionable club, and it's the most difficult matter in the world to make them pay up. - I send hundreds of bills, and when 1 speak to members about it it 8 always the same story: never got the bill, old fel; certainly 111 pay up. Just send me a bill and I'll see that you get it." There are 470 delin quents in the club and I'll be sure they all get their bills this quarter. The responses have already begun to come in m a way that foretells the en tire success of the scheme. Philadelphia Record. Electric Bitters.
