WASHINGTON NEWS.
HARRIS TO DIE.
Carlyle Harris, the wife murderer, is
condemned to electrocution, and has
been denied a new trial. Unless Gov
ernor Flower reprieves him, his death
will terminate the most sensational
murder case that has been tried in New
York city for a decade. He had a fair
trial before an impartial jury. He was
defended by the ablest legal talent, and
all the testimony he wished to advance
was allowed. All was in vain. The
verdict was unanimous against him. In
a multitude of ways he has labored to
get a new trial. So strong has been his
appeal that public sentiment became
aroused in some unhealthy way, and
one prominent New York paper has
labored vigorously in his defense. Re
corder Smythe, one of the firmest, and
most impartial men that ever sat upon
a bench, refused to be moved because be
saw no valid evidence to support the de
mand for a new trial. Harris was a
young man who represents a class too
common in our cities. He was hand
some, polished, brilliant and popular.
He made a beautiful girl think he loved
her and implored her to marry him.
She consented. Like a villain he tired
of her. Kather than live like a man and
make a happy home, he poisoned her
while attending a fashionable boarding
school in New York city. He planned
that death would thus come without
discovering him as its fiendish cause.
But an innocent soul had been dis
patched before its time from this earth.
It must be avenged. A newspaper man
came to the rescue ; the strange death
was investigated ; startling develop
ments followed ; Harris was arrested,
proof was piled on proof, the trial came,
the evidence was convincing, and the
verdict was natural. Thus a girl who
trusted in u man who professed to love
and promised to protect her sleeps in
death, but public sentiment and the law
demand that the destroyer of her sacred
life shall go before the court of another
world for final punishment, and that
purity in womanhood shall not be the
sport of adventurers without a merited
and lasting rebuke Telegram.
Among the freaks secured for the
world's fair is a specimen of the laugh
ing jackass. And with an extravagance
that seems almost wanton the manage
ment sent clear to South Australia for it.
The man who attempts to do business
without advertising has been aptly
compared to a young fellow winking at a
pretty girl in the dark. He may know
what he is doing but nobody else does.
With four newspaper men in the cabi
net, Mr. Cleveland ought to get along
pretty well. Mr. Carlisle once filled the
editorial chair. Mr. Lamont was a
newspaper man when Cleveland discov
ered him, Hoke Smith runs a paper now,
and J. Steriing Morton was in his young
er days connected with the Chicago
Times. What would' this country do,
anyway, if it wasn't for the newspapers?
The
Allen Farco Will Injure the
publican Yesler Will Case.
Ke-
The reduction of registration of letters
to eight cents is gratifying, not only to
the public, but to postoffice clerks, who
have been much bothered by the old law
It is hard to make many who register
letters see that the extra two cents ; for
postage was still needed after the registry
: fee was paid. The registration business
will probably pay the government more
at eight cents than at the old figure,
It will make registry clerks work a little
harder, but that will not hurt most of
them. .
Seattle, Wash., March 17, 1S93.
(Special to The Chronicle.) It is the
universal opinion of all thinking men
that tbe proceedings of the late legisla
ture of Washington have conduced to
lower the republican party, and to con
firm the issues in the next campaign be
tween the democrats and the people's
party. General satisfaction on the part
of the republicans is expressed bv virtue
of the governor appointing Mr. Allen
United States senator, but much doubt
ia expressed as to the probabilities of
the senate confirming Mr: Allen's ap
pointment. In case the senate does not
confirm this appointment, and seat Mr.
Allen, the state of Washington will be
obliged to be represented by only one
United States senator for the next two
years. This, of course, to all well
thinking people, is not at all desirable,
owing to the fact that Washington is a
young state, and should, of necessity,
have a full representation. .
The famous Yesler will case has come
to an unsuccessful termination. A mo
tion to dismiss has been filed after the
time has elapsed in which the prosecut
ing attorney Ehould file tbe information.
The motion has not yet been heard, and
yesterday the information was filed,
but, under our statutes, the probabili
ties are that the information will be
dismissed, and the motion will be
granted. In case this is the termina
tion, it will appear rather farcical to
have occupied nearly three weeks in the
preliminary examination, and then al
low it to go by default. In case the
court rules adversely to the 6tate, Mrs.
Yesler will receive her proportion of Mr.
Yesler's wealth, which is one-half of the
estate, after tbe debts and liabilities are
satisfied.
Not a monopolist.
English country houses have fire in
onlv a few sitting rooms, the halls are
cold and there are no bath rooms
When the Romans occupied the same
country years ago every villa was
heated with hot air pipes and had both
Turkish and cold plunge baths. Within
one inclosure are the" remains of a Ro'
man house built more than sixteen
years ago, perfectly fitted with heating
and bathing appliances, and a modern
house, six times the size of the other,
warmed with four open grates.
It Should Be In Every Bouse
J. B. Wilson, 371 Clay St., Sharps
burg, Pa., says he will not be without
Dr. King's New Discovery for consump
tion, coughs and colds, that it cured his
wife who was threatened with pneumonia
after an attack of "la grippe," when
various other remedies and several phy
sicians had done her no good. Robert
Barber, of Cooksport, Pa., claims Dr.
Sling's New Discovery has done him
more good than anything he ever used
for lung trouble. Nothing like it. Try
it. Free trial bottles at Snipes & Kin
ersly's. Large bottles, 60c. and $1.00.
Money to Loan.
I have money to loan on short time
loans.
" ; Used up.
It's the only way to use some
things, but . it's a bad condition
for a man or woman. It means
disease. Take Dr. Pierce's
Golden Medical Discovery.
That means health. 'It invig
orates the liver and kidneys,
purifies, the blood and cleanses
and renews the whole system.
For all scrofulous humors and
blood - taints, and even con
sumption (or lung-scrofula), if
taken in time, it's a positive
remedy. It's a. guaranteed one.
In all diseases of the liver,
blood and lungs, it's warranted
to benefit or cure, or the
money is refunded. No other
medicine of its class is sold,
through druggists, on this pe
adiar plan. You can judge
why. You only pay for the
good you get.

I would respectfully inform the pub
lic that I have been able to procure a
pretty fair outfit for raising or moving
houses, and am willing to do that kind
of work at reasonable figures. But I do
wish it distinctly understood that, after
looking at a job, I am to be the sole
judge of the price to be set upon the
work that I am to undertake, or may do
If there is any person who may think
that there is big money to be made at
house moving in The Dalles, by doing
work for less than I can do it, I would
advise him to prepare himself, by buy
ing tools, and reap some of the rich har
vest. In conclusion I will say that if I
am called upon to do anv work in my
line, I shall endeavor, in the future, as
in the past, to give entire satisfaction in
all respects to my employer.
Most Respectfully,
Andrew Velarde.

Mrs. Million's Side.
When Mrs. Million goes to Tide she travels forth
in Mate,
Her horses, full of fire aud pride, go pruncing
from the pate:
But all the beauties of the day she views with
languid eye,
Her flesh in weakness wastes away, her voice Is
but a sigh.
For Mrs. Million is in an advanced
stage of catarrh, and all the luxuries
that wealth can buy fail to give her com
fort. She envies her rosy waiting-maid,
and would give all her riches for that
young woman's pare breath and bloom
ing health. Now, if some true and dis
interested friend would advise Mrs. Mil-,
lion of the wonderful merits of Dr.
Sage's Catarrh Remedy, she would
learn that her case is not past help.
$500 reward is offered by the manufacur
ers for a case of cataTO-h in the head
which they cannot cure. 1
Joseph V. Dory, of Warsaw, 111., was
troubled with rheumatism and tried a
number of different remedies, but says
none of them seemed to do him any
good ; but finally he got hold of one
that speedily cured him. He was much
pleased with it, and lelt sure that others
similarly afflicted would like to know
what the remedy was that cured him.
He states for the benefit of the public
that it is called Chamberlain's Pain
Balm. For sale by Blakeley & Hough
ton, Druggists.
