Three Costly Hut houses.
This is the season of the year when the
great army of gardeners employed by
New York's millionaires who have a fad
for flowers are putting their hothouses in
shape for the winter. I met Jay Gould's
chief gardener yesterday and he told me
that everything was in excellent ehape
at the railroad king's $300,000 hothouse
Tip the Hudson. A lot of choice plants
and exotics have just arrived from India
and other eastern countries.
John Hoey's difficulties have not de
terred him from looking after his pet
flowers in his grand hothouses at Holly
wood, N. J. I am told his chief gardener
has had several conferences 'with Mr.
Hoey during the past two weeks about
bis favorite flowers and their care. Mr.
Hoey is passionately fond of flowers, and
. selects the seeds and bulbs himself , and
at times superintends the work of his
gardeners. -
- Another man who has a half a million
dollar hothonse is the Standard oil king,
John D. Rockefeller, who has a palace c-u
the Hudson. It has not been completed
long and his gardeners are constantly re
ceiving new additions. Mr. Rockefeller
eays he will have the finest flower show
in the world in a year or two. New York

Crime Decreasing?.
All the criminal returns published of
late have happily tended to show that
crime is decreasing. The judicial sta
tistics for the past year bear the same
testimony. Whether under the head of
"criminal classes at large" or "in local
and convict prisons and reformatories,"
the figures show a steady decline. The
eame ia true of the houses of bad char
acter, by which is meant such as are
the resort of thieves, depredators and
suspected persona. In England and i
Wales there are 2,688 houses of this de-1
Bcription.
It seems rather odd to be told that of
. these 345 are public houses and 265 beer
shops, because if they are known resorts
of such characters, why are their licenses
not withdrawn? Is it for the reason
once given by a French administrator
that they serve the ends of the law by
providing places where those who are
wanted by the police can easily be
found? The known houses of receivers
of stolen goods had declined from 778
two years ago to 724 last' year. London
Telegraph. ... .
The Sailors' Friend.
Mr. Samuel Plitnsoll still keeps to his
house in Park lane, and is far from well,
but he has sufficiently recovered himself
to be able to writo a letter claiming one
result or rather the want of result of
the recent storm to legislation. Has
there ever been remembered, he asks, a
gale of equal suddenness, violence and
duration which was not tho cause of
very, very much greater loss of life than
that recorded of the gale which has re
cently passed away? .
. A year and eight months ago, when he
was fervently urging the government to
assist in passing tho load line bill, it was
Bhown that the deplorable loss of ' life at
sea from overloading was entirely pre
ventable, and that the passing of the,
bill would immediately check it, while,
when the act was steadily and nnif ormly
administered, this head of loss would
disappear. He points ' triumphantly to
the recent gale for confirmation. Liver

Yellow Flowers Bring 111 Lack.
Actors have a queer superstition about
yellow flowers, and will not wear them.
While at Dr. Todd's booth at the fair
grounds Misa Marie Greenwood saw
some yellow flowers, and after admiring
them asked for them. Mr. Guibertson,
her leading man, was present and begged
her not to take them, saying they would
surely bring her ill luck. A laugh was
Indulged in at his expense and she took
the yellow flowers. In an hour the opera
house was in ashes, and Miss Green
wood's ill luck had cost her $7,500. The
flowers got in their work. Owensboro

Sad Looking Author of a Merry liook.
. One who once sot type in a great Eng
lish establishment remembers the time
when that most fascinating of nonsense
books, "Alice in Wonderland," was put
into metal from young Dddgeson's manu
script. "As you saw tho writer, a grave
almost sad looking young man, going in
and out of Worcester college, or at the
office about the proofs, you scarcely
think such melancholy looking author
ship could produce so merry a book."

The Invention of .Spectacles.
Spectacles were first used in the latter
part of the Thirteenth century. There
is no certainty as to who was the in
ventor of them, but the distinction is
generally claimed for Alessandro di
Spina, who is said to have made some
-about 1285. Notes and Queries. t

A Carious Clock.
- A novel clock is now being exhibited
by the Watchmakers union in London.
It is of wood, beautifully carved and
stands six feet in height. The case is a
perfect fort in. miniature, and instead of
a bell and striking hammer the hours
are announced by a bugler, who emerges
from a door at one side of the fort and
blows the call to assemble and march.
- Almost instantly . doors open on all
sides, iv regiment of automatic -sol
diers, six abreast, march out, wheel to
the left, "stop a- few seconds to "mark
time," and then march through another
parr, or the fortress to the barracks.
These marches and countermarches oc
cur each hour. "If they come out to an
nounce the hour of 1 o'clock, one soldier
fires his tiny gun. At 2 o'clock two sol
diers fire their pieces, increasing with
the hour until the twelve leaders fire
their guns, the rear ranks bowincr their
heads and pointing with their bayonets
toward the dial of the clock. Chicago
On Regiment's Colonels.'
Among the strange fatalities, of the
year there are none more noteworthy
than those surrounding tho colonelcy of
tne iwenty-first infantry. In less than
a year the regiment has suffered the loss
of three colonels Morrow, O'Beirne and
Uonrad. We trust that the fated three
break the spell, and that Colonel Jewett
will continue in command until his . re

Cholerine In Pennsylvania. .
Swickley, Penn : We had an epidemic
of cholerine, as our physicians called it,
in this place lately and I made a great
hit with Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera
and Diarrhoea Remedy. I sold . four
dozen bottles of it in one week and have
since sold nearly a groes. This remedy
did the work and was a big advertise
ment for me. Several persons who had
been troubled with diarrhoea for two or
three weeks were cured by a few doses
of this medicine.
