JL Chlneaa Governor.
Tshang Yao, the governor of the pro
vince of Shantung, who died recently,
" was one of the highest dignitaries of the
Celestial empire. He had a highly ad
venturous career. Born in lowly posi
tion, he was obliged to flee in his youth
on account of having murdered the tor
mentor of an old man. He became a
. robber and soon etood at the head of all
the brigands who made the province .of
Hunan unsafe. When, during the re
bellion, the chief town of the province
was threatened, the governor issued a
proclamation in which he promised the
hand of his daughter to the man who
' would save the town from the enemy.
At the head of 600 bandits, Tshang:
beat off the attack of the rebels, and led
home on the next day, as a reward for.
. nls bravery, the almond eyed Beauty.
Then he maderapid progress. - He was
not able to read or write, but was of
great integrity, and died poor as he was
born. He was called by his people, on
account of his charity, Tshang, "the
blue sky." It is said, however, that he
was not always just toward Europeans,
and especially the missionaries. London

Cholerine In Pennsylvania.
Bwickley, Penn : We had an epidemic
of cholerine, as our physicians called it,
in this place lately and I made a great
hit with Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera
and Diarrhoea Remedy. I sold four
dozen bottles of it in one week and have
since sold nearly a gross. This remedy
did the work and was a big advertise
ment for me. Several persons who had
been troubled with diarrhoea for two or
three weeks were cured by a few doses
of this medicine.

Rheumatism Quickly Cured.
Three days is a very short time in
which to cure a bad case of rheumatism ;
but it can be done, if the proper treat
ment is adopted, as will be seen by the
following from James Lambert, of New
Brunswick, 111: "I was badly afflicted
with rheumatism in the hips and legs,
"when I bought a bottle of Chamberlain's
Pain Balm. It cured me in three days.
I am all right today ; and would insist
on every one who is afflicted with that
terrible disease to uso Chamberlain's
Pain Balm and get well at once." 50
cent bottles for sale by Blakeley &
Houghton.

Th GalT Stream.
- The question ia often asked, To what
extent does the Otilf Stream modify the
climate of the United States? To its
supposed erratic movements is laid' the
blame of every abnormal season. There'
is every evidence that the Gulf Stream
is governed absolutely by law in all its
changes.- The course through the ocean
is without doubt fixed. Its fluctuations
are by days, by months, by; seasons or
by years, and they do not vary materi
ally one from the other. Its temperature
changes, depending upon the relative
heat of the tropical and polar seasons,
and upon the strength of the producing
trade winds. The warm water may be
driven toward the shore by the waves
caused by a favorable wind, but the cur
rent remains in its proper place. The
warm water gives off a certain amount
of heat to the air above it, and if this air
is moved to the land we feel the heat.
The presence of the warm water on
the coast of Europe would in no way
modify the climate if the prevailing
winds were easterly instead of westerly.
If the prevailing winds in New England
ba winter were southeast instead of
northwest, the climate would be equal to
that of the Asore islands, mild and
balmy. For the cause of abnormal sea
sons wa may look to meteorology. The
current is in its place ready to give off
the heat and moisture to the air when
ever the demand is made upon it, but
by the erratic movements of the air this
heat and . moisture may be delivered at
unexpected times and seasons, and thus
give rise to the erroneous belief that the
Gulf Stream itself has gone astray.
