A friend recently called attention to a case which he thought subverted our view that the ivy growing on walla tended to make them dry. rather than damp. On lookinj? at the case we find that the wall was covered -with the - Ampelopsia veitchii, or, as it is called, Japan ivy, and that the vines had been suffered to grow over the shingle roof of the house some, four or five feet from the gable end, and that the spouts and other water conduit were completely ' choked by this growth of vhie and fill ing up with leaves. . It is no wonder that a house should be damp under such circumstances. It should not be forgotten that the vines on walls must never be allowed to reach the roof or clamber in the gutters, but must be confined entirely to the vertical surface of the walls on which they grow. The innumerable number of small root lets absorbing moisture continually gen erally make walls so dry and - hard that it has been fonnd at times in the Old "World, when necessary to take down a building, almost impossible to do so on account of the extreme hardness of the . j i. ; . i. i i i ' i : . luuiuir, w Lilian uiws ueuu Kepi ury iur bu many years through the agency of these roots. It cured me in three days. I am all right today; and would insist on every one who is afflicted with that terrible disease to use Chamberlain's Pain Balm and get well at once." 50 cent bottles for sale by Blakelev & Houghton. To what extent does the Gulf Stream modify the climate of the United States? To its supposed erratic movements ' is laid the blame of every abnormal season. There is every evidence . that the Gulf Stream is governed absolutely by law in all its changes. The course through the ocean is without doubt fU&l. Its fluctuations are by days, by months, oy seasons or by years, and they do not vary materi ally one from the other.. Its temperature changes, depending upon the relative beat of the tropical and polar seasons, and upon the strength of the producing trade winds." The warm water may be driven toward the shore by the waves caused by a favorable wind, but the cur rent remains in its proper place. The warm water gives off a: certain amount of heat to the air above it, and if this air is moved to the land we feel the heat. .The presence of the warm water on the coast of Europe would in nd"way modify the climate if - the prevailing winds were easterly instead of westerly. If the prevailing winds in New England In winter were southeast instead of northwest, the climate would be equal to that of the Azoro islands, mild and balmy. For the cause of abnormal sea sons we may look to meteorology. The current is in its place ready to give off the heat and moisture to the air when ever the demand is made upon it, but by the erratio movements of the air this heat and moisture may be delivered at unexpected times and seasons, and thus give rise to the erroneous belief that the Gulf Stream itself has gone astray. John E. Pillsbnrv in Century.-- j The Postage Stamp Nearly 52 Years Old. The postage stamp will be fifty-two years old in May.t Its inventor was a printer, James Chalmers, of Dundee, Scotland, who died in 1853. England, fifty-two years ago,, introduced the new system of prepaying letter postage, and according to a decree of Dec. 21, 1839, issued the first stamps, which were to be put before the publiS on May 6 of the following year. A year later they were introduced in the United States and Switzerland, and within three years had become common in Bavaria, Belgium and France. Charleston News and Courier. ; ; The Olilettt Voter.
