WILLIAM MCKINLEY.
The Boston Advertiser, speaking of
Gov. McKinley's recentj losses, pays a
high tribute to his'personal worth,
which says : It will probably have to be
admitted that William -McKinley is not J
a shrewd and cautious business man so
far as hia personal affairs ar concerned;
at. any rate that in putting at hazard,
with no hope of pecuniary -reward, but
olely to help and .-oblige a friend, "all
his living," making himself thus liable
for another man's debts to the ei tent of
$200,000, he allowed his heart to get the
better , of bis . head. But whatever .the
error, may have been, it was such as only j
a large-hearted man would have com-.
mitted.f He deserves sympathy, a thous
and,. times more- than he deserves re
proach. . . . ., : ..- .
. Gov. and ex-Congressman McKinley
is one of the most estimable wen in pub
lie life today. - The admiration. felt for
him, by millions of .American people is
.thoroughly well deserved.- It is deserved
on both political and personal grounds.
It has been growing for many years past,,
is growing all the time, and nothing has
occurred that tends in any degree to
diminish it. True, the economic policy,
now popularly identified with his name
has been, for the time being placed in
check. - The -latest presidential election
resulted adversely to protective princi
ples. We -do not dispute the assertion
that, judged by the only test which, .our
constitution provides, the test of Novem
ber .. ballots, . "JUcKinleyism" nas re
ceived a set-back. How far the, choice
of Grover Cleveland and the choice, once
and again, of a national house of repre
sentatives having a majority of its mem
bers attached to Mr. Cleveland's party,
was in truth an indorsement of free
trade in distinction from protectionist
ideas,. and how far those results were
brought to pass by other issues and in
fluences, is now an idle question. The
fact - remains that .this country, was
never, in all its history, so prosperous,
contented and happy as it has '.been
under the operations i of the . McKinley
bill. . Our firm opinion that .within the
next four years the people will see their
mistake and take ..effectual means., to
. rectify it may stand for- whatever, it ia
-' worth. We are satisfied to await the
event.-.- ,..-
i Regarding Mr. McKinley as a man, a
gentleman in the fullest meaning of the
word, there is no room for - two opinions
on tbe part of those who know him or
really know of him. ..His honesty is un
disputed. The purity of his private life
commands the respect of all who honor
unsullied character. His abilities are
extraordinary. He ' is a- statesman, of
whom Americans, whether they agree or
disagree with him in matters of party
politics, have reason' to be proud. .In
his present difficulties he is the object
of that ungrudging sympathy which his
worth and his misfortunes merit.'
President Harrison will come to the
coast. He has accepted the Stanford
university offer, and will . shortly be
known as Professor Harrison.
The Indiana, will be ready for service
and turned over to the government in
about a year. She is designed especially
as a vessel to fight, not to run away at
all. She will be fitted with search
lights and torpedo netting, and will cost
$3,000,000. The Indiana is known as a
coast line battleship. She is built of
steel, and has a double bottom for the
distance of 196 feet, extending for the
length covered by the machinery and
magazine spaces.- All the vital portions
of .the ship are thus protected. Her
length is 348 feet, breadth 69.3, dis
placement 10,283 tons, maximum speed
16.2 knots and has a 9,000 horse power.
-She will be the watch dog of tbe entire
eastern coast. ' .- ...

if Of Interest'td Merchants.. ...
; The suit of A. 8. Collins and Mrs. a! 8. Collins
against H. Herbiing of this city, which was to
come before the jtrry yesterday morning, was
again postponed. This suit against one of our
oldest and best-known dry goods merchants
creates considerable comment in commercial
circles. It appears that Mr. and Mrs. A. 8. Col
lins obtained nnder false pretenses and promises
at the end-of the year 1891, goods to the amount
of 150.80 from the defendant; but instead of pay
ing the bin, as agreed, they shortly afterwards
left the city by night and moved to California.
Last spring Mr. Herbring learned that all their
household goods, etc., were In the hands of the
sheriff of Wasco county, and consequently placed
a second attachment upon the goods held by the
sheriff. A portion of these goods were sold last
December by the sheriff of Wasco county, as no
compromise could be obtained by defendant
And aiow come the plaintiffs and sue through
their attorney, Judge A. 8. Bennett, the defend
ant, for the sum of 1175.00. We will watch this
suit when it comes before the jury, as we think
it is one of great Interest to storekeepers. . '

on trial In the Circuit Court today, and the jury
empanelled were E. W. Trout, Geo. Jolts, A. Bet

Harper, W. C. Hansell, John Wood. Argument

to be that the plaintiff left this city owing Mr.
Herbring, and he attached property for the debt.

President Harrison approved the car
coupler bill yesterday.. The car coupler
- now in general use on freight ars is a
very primitive affair and has cost more
loss of life and mained limbs than any
other device known to railroads. There
is no dearth of better ones for about
- 2,000 patents have been granted in the
United States alone on car couplers. - The
reason none of them have been adopted
furnishes a commentary on the stupend
ous magnitude of the daily business done
in America. To replace the old. coupler
for a new one would' require -at' least a
day's stop in freight traffic all over the
United States. ' Of course it must be
done simultaneously.- - On passenger
service it is different, as each line owns
their own cars and a change could be
effected with comparative ease. Now
that . the car coupler bill has become a
law, an end will be accomplished that
will save loss of life and limb, besides
inspiring hope in the heart of some 2,000
inventors, one of whom will suddenly
make a collossal fortune.
