TUESDAY, -
FEB. 28, 1893
If proof were wanted that Mr. Allen's
majority ia artificial, misrepresentative
and delusive, it ia supplied by the para
doxical conduct of Senator Van de Van
terof King, says the Spokane Review.
For weeks Mr. Van de Vanter has been
the recognized and accredited leader of
. the Allen forces. Mr. Allen, and Gov
ernor McGraw have publicly proclaimed
bis leadership and referred members of
the legislature and others to him for ad
vice and decision. Yet all this while be
has been privately sneering at Allen
and letting drop the most uncompli
mentary expressions of his ability and
manhood. At last be has openly bolted,
with the declaration that he has cast his
last vote for Allen. At least a score of
others who have been voting for Mr.
Allen feel the same way, and would bolt
in a body if their shackles could be
broken.
It is quite generally known that the
largest wheat-growing farm in the world
ia owned by Buffalo men, but very few
men of this city know that a Buffalo
man is the owner of the largest farm in
the world, that is used exclusively for
breeding and raising . trotting horses.
The largest farm in the world devoted to
this purpose, however; is located in
Sedgwick county, Kansas, and ia owned
by Henry C. Jewett of Buffalo. Mr,
Jewett has long been known as the
. owner of the celebrated Jewett farm
located near Buffalo, but the Kansas
farm is known to but few, and most of
those who do know of it regard it as a
branch of the New York farm, while the
truth is that the New York farm ia the
branch of the Kansas farm, the parent
which supplies it with the material to
make up its stables that go out each
year to do battle on the turf.
There are thousands of acres of marsh
lands in the states of Oregon and Wash
ington crying for capital to take hold and
develope it. It is as fine land aa can be
found in the world. A large part of it is
covered already with wild cranberries,
and the rest would need only labor to
utilize it for tame ones. In these unde
veloped marshes, many of which lie in
Tillamook and other counties lies a for
tune more sure than a mine, says the
Pacific farmer, if properly utilized by
energetic men, who will make a study of
the business and try to supply the mar
kets with this delicious berry.
A plow specially constructed for side
hill work has been received at Walla
Walla. The Spectator says it ia a single
plow, but fitted up with gang-plow gear
ing. It haa two mold boards which are
so arranged that he can hardly fail to do
the work for which it is designed. It is
to be given a thorough trial in a few
days.
Help Yourself.
Astoria Herald.
Oregon haa no fish commisioners this
year. The old law was repealed by the
passage of the new one, and Governor
Pennoyer fixed the new one with his
little veto, consequently Oregon is with
out a fish commission. The new bill,
that Pennoyer vetoed, provided for five
commissioners. There will be no one
to enforce the Sunday close law and the
fishermen will just help themselves, and
they ought to. Let them fish on Sun
day and any time. Catch all they can,
aa this will probably be the last year for
gill net fishermen. They should be al
lowed to make as much money aa possi
ble this season so aa to have enough to
get out of the country with.
Independence Pleased.
West Side.
Our people were led to rejoice last
Saturday when the news reached us that
the normal appropriation amounted to
$22,382. While no new buildings will
be built this year, the school will go for
ward as before, and its attendance be
largely increased. While more build
ings are demanded, yet the school itself
ia the main thing, and additional build
ings can be rented if the school outgrows
its present quarters.
Collection of Taxes.
Heppner Record.
The bill to abolish the present system
of collecting taxes passed both' houses.
It goes into effect at once. It does away
with the necessity of the sheriff visiting
every precinct in the county for the pur
pose of collecting taxes, and hereafter
every person must call, at the sheriff's
office and pay his taxes there. It is
probable under this system copies of the
rolls will be sent to responsible parties
at various places in the county and they
can receive the taxea due.

Mot the Grip. .
There is a family in this city which
lives in .constant awe of the grip, and
this fear is particularly centered on the
small boy of the house, albeit he is a ro
bust specimen of his age.
The other day the small boy sneezed;
This was enough to alarm the entire
household. He continued sneezing, and
his mother suggested sending for the
doctor, as she was sure he was going to
be ill
"Do you feel sick?" she asked tenderly.
"Do you think you are getting the grip?"
"Grip nothing!" ejaculated the small
boy between paroxysmal sneezes. "1

An odd will was filed at the probate
office in Auburn on Tuesday. It w
that, of FJisha Ball, of Hinot, and was
dated in 1867, but the maker of the will
had outlived all the witnesses to it, and
it had to be proved from the handwriting
of the man who drew it. It was the first
case on record of the kind. Not a change
had been made in the paper from the day
it was drawn. Kennebec (Me.) Journal.
